Frank Darabont's 2007 adaptation of Stephen King's 1980 novella The Mist is now available to stream on Roku. The film, which reimagines the story with a definitive ending not present in the original text, follows David Drayton (Thomas Jane) and his son Billy as they seek supplies after a storm. Their supermarket refuge becomes a cage when a dense mist engulfs the town, revealing monstrous entities that attack the survivors.
The narrative centers on the psychological unraveling of the group, particularly through the influence of Mrs. Carmody (Marcia Gay Harden), whose religious interpretations escalate fear into fanaticism. Darabont emphasizes how the threat shifts from external monsters to internal human conflict, as the survivors confront the possibility of meaning in their catastrophe.
The film's production constraints are evident in its visual effects, which were limited by a modest budget of $13 million to $18 million. The CGI creatures, including tentacled entities in the supermarket's loading dock, appear flat and lack integration with the environment. Despite these technical limitations, the performances of Jane, Harden, and Toby Jones anchor the story's emotional weight.
A pivotal departure from King's novella occurs in the final sequence. After escaping the supermarket and exhausting their fuel, David and the remaining survivors face a harrowing choice. With only four bullets remaining, David executes the others before turning the gun on his son, Billy. He then steps into the mist, screaming in anguish, only to witness a military convoy pass by moments later. This ending, which Darabont fought to preserve during production, was praised by King, who expressed regret that he had not conceived it himself.
The Mist, known for its bleak conclusion, remains a notable example of horror cinema that explores the intersection of fear, faith, and human desperation. Its availability on streaming platforms has introduced the film to new audiences, inviting reflection on its themes without embellishment or interpretation.
