Crunchyroll added the all-new Sgt. Frog television anime to its service with English subtitles on Friday, the company announced. The platform is streaming the series under the title KERORO☆ and is making it available worldwide except in Asian territories.
The anime premiered on October 3 at 9:30 a.m. on TV Tokyo and its affiliated broadcasters. It introduces a new cast for the franchise, distinct from the returning characters of the recent film Shin Gekijōban ☆ Keroro Gunsō Fukkatsu Shite Sokkō Chikyū Metsubō no Kiki de Arimasu!, which opened in June.
The voice cast includes:
- Kōsuke Echigoya as Sergeant Major Kululu
- Rika Nagae as Private Second Class Tamama
- Makoto Koichi as Sergeant Keroro
- Toshiki Masuda as Corporal Giroro
- Satoshi Inomata as Lance Corporal Dororo
- Yuki Sakakihara as Fuyuki Hinata
- Minori Fujidera as Natsumi Hinata
- Sumire Morohoshi as Momoka Nishizawa
- Hiiro Ishibashi as Mutsumi Hōjō
- Koko Fukushima as Koyuki Azumaya
Nobuhiro Kondō serves as chief director, with Akihiko Sano directing at BN Pictures. Production oversight involves Bridge and AISLE, while Toshimitsu Takeuchi handles series scripts and Hatsue Nakayama designs the characters. Kan Sawada composes the music.
Additional staff credits include Keiichi Funada for color design, Kenichi Tajiri and Shintarō Inoue as art directors, Teruyuki Kawase as director of photography, Daisuke Imai for editing, and Haru Yamada as sound director.
The earlier Sgt. Frog anime series, produced by Sunrise, aired from 2004 to 2011 and spawned five feature films. Funimation previously released two "seasons" of the series on DVD after ADV Films acquired the license. Discotek later licensed the franchise, releasing all 358 episodes across successive SD Blu-ray Disc volumes by season, with volumes 5-7 issued in 2024.
The 20th anniversary film Shin Gekijōban ☆ Keroro Gunsō Fukkatsu Shite Sokkō Chikyū Metsubō no Kiki de Arimasu! opened in Japan on June 26 and earned 150,809,200 yen (approximately US$927,900) during its opening weekend, ranking #4 at the box office.
Crunchyroll’s description of the series states: "Keroro is Sergeant Frog - the leader of a platoon of warriors sent to conquer planet Earth. But when the amphibious invaders discovered how much humans enjoy dissecting their comrades, the troops were scattered, the mission was aborted, and Keroro was abandoned. Now, this once proud soldier spends more time wielding a vacuum than he does the weapons of war. It's a far cry from the glory of battle, but hey, at least he's got his own room. And though the invasion may have slowed to a hop, Sergeant Frog still occasionally yearns to overcome his karaoke addiction and reassemble his troops."
Sunrise, the studio behind the franchise, holds a non-controlling minority stake in Anime News Network Inc.
