Founders Fund led a $5 million purchase of governance tokens in Anvil, a decentralized finance protocol focused on digital-asset collateral, as the project expands tools for business integration. Pantera Capital, Theta Blockchain Ventures, Bullish and Protoscale Capital also participated in the acquisition of ANVL tokens, according to a Monday announcement. The transaction involved tokens drawn from Anvil's existing treasury, not newly issued supply. The protocol's governance token has a circulating supply of 80 billion out of a total 100 billion.
Anvil, built on Ethereum, enables digital assets to serve as collateral for financial obligations such as payments and credit. Unlike traditional decentralized finance platforms that typically require borrowers to post collateral and pay interest on loans, Anvil uses collateral to guarantee commitments without extending credit or imposing interest charges. The protocol functions as an onchain equivalent of a letter of credit, reserving assets to ensure payment fulfillment.
Anvil Research Labs introduced a software development kit designed to allow companies to integrate the protocol without writing blockchain code. The kit aims to reduce technical barriers for enterprises adopting the technology. Partner companies include Consensus, Bitcoin.com, Flexa and others already using or integrating Anvil's tools. Bullish, CoinDesk's parent company, is also exploring potential applications of the protocol within its operations.
The protocol operates within a decentralized finance landscape where approximately $56 billion in assets are currently locked across lending platforms, according to DefiLlama. Established players such as Aave and Morpho dominate this space. Anvil's approach differs by focusing on collateral-backed guarantees rather than loan creation. The Acronym Foundation developed the protocol as open-source software, with approximately $14 million currently locked on its network.
Governance tokens purchased by Founders Fund and other investors grant voting rights over protocol development decisions. The investment reflects growing interest in infrastructure that enables businesses to secure financial commitments through verifiable digital asset collateral without traditional borrowing mechanisms.
