Google announced a 20-year power purchase agreement with Constellation Energy that will deliver 3,590 megawatts of electricity beginning in 2028, with nearly 890 megawatts coming from newly uprated nuclear reactors. The agreement marks the largest such deal Constellation has entered into, targeting capacity increases at 11 existing nuclear facilities across Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey through turbine, generator, and control system upgrades. Constellation plans to invest $4.3 billion to bring the first uprated reactor online by 2028, while Google commits up to $205 billion this year to data center expansion and computing infrastructure. The deal also includes 2,700 megawatts from unspecified sources, with Microsoft separately pursuing Constellation's involvement in restarting the Three Mile Island Unit 1 reactor. Meta has indicated plans to preserve a shuttered Illinois nuclear plant through similar arrangements, though its 6.6 gigawatt clean energy target relies on small modular reactor deployment, a technology still in early development.
