Robinhood announced a $25 million Bitcoin purchase as part of its corporate treasury strategy, marking the first time the brokerage has placed the cryptocurrency directly on its balance sheet. Senior Vice President Johann Kerbrat disclosed the allocation on X, stating the move reflects a belief in crypto’s long‑term prospects and serves as a diversification of assets. The figure represents less than 0.5% of the $5.362 billion in cash and cash equivalents reported for the quarter ending June 30, 2026, and is therefore more symbolic than financially material.
The decision follows a period of internal debate among executives about whether holding Bitcoin would align with shareholder interests. During a 2025 earnings call, finance executive Shiv Verma noted that the company had weighed the treasury allocation against other priorities such as engineering, product development and growth initiatives. Ultimately, the board concluded that the strategic signal outweighed the modest capital commitment.
The allocation coincides with broader expansion of Robinhood’s crypto operations. Earlier in 2025 the firm acquired Bitstamp for $224 million, gaining a regulated exchange in Europe and Asia and accelerating its international footprint. Since the acquisition, Robinhood has introduced tokenized equities, blockchain‑related services and a suite of staking and institutional trading tools. In the second quarter, customers traded roughly $40 billion of crypto across the combined platforms, generating $100 million in transaction revenue — down 38% from the prior year and representing 8% of total net revenue.
While the $25 million position is small relative to the company’s overall cash reserves, it signals a shift from a purely customer‑focused crypto model to one that also holds digital assets on its own books. The company has not indicated whether this purchase is a one‑off transaction or the beginning of a recurring treasury program. Analysts note that, unlike firms such as Strategy that routinely raise capital to expand Bitcoin holdings, Robinhood’s move remains a limited experiment at this stage.
