Wallets tied to the U.S.
Wallets tied to the U.S. government transferred more than $100 million in cryptocurrency on Tuesday, including approximately $71.6 million in bitcoin and $31.6 million in BNB.
The bitcoin originated from assets seized in the Potapenko-Turogin and Bitfinex cases. Arkham, a blockchain intelligence firm, reported that 833.599 BTC, valued at about $71.6 million at the time, was sent to two addresses that Arkham does not label. Within hours, both receiving addresses forwarded the funds to addresses identified as Coinbase Prime deposit wallets.
A separate government-labeled wallet moved roughly 40,285 BNB, worth $31.63 million, to an unlabeled address (0x7F68F63fB3A9CCCf352409603421E0A574FbAD90). That address subsequently transferred the entire amount to a second unlabeled address (0x6fB3Fe7b7E78AbB84CE007cBC7412C850B15A579).
Arkham noted that the BTC came from two sources: a wallet labeled "Potapenko/Turogin forfeited funds" (568.7 BTC) and coins seized in the Bitfinex hack case (264.9 BTC). The BNB originated from assets seized from Alameda Research.
The government continues to hold about $27.5 billion in seized cryptocurrency, all of which has been obtained through enforcement actions. No taxpayer funds have been used to acquire additional holdings.
Transfers of this nature often raise concerns about potential sales, but the movement appears to be unrelated to any immediate disposal plan. A March 2025 executive order directs that bitcoin forfeited to the government be retained in a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, according to market commentator Jose Rosell.
