The long‑awaited film adaptation of the BioShock video‑game series has resurfaced with a tentative update from its director.

Franchise Lawrence told GamesRadar that the project is “still working on a script,” adding that the team is “pretty close” to finalizing it. Lawrence also expressed personal enthusiasm, saying he has been “dying to” make the movie and has been “working at it.”

The adaptation has lingered in development for more than a decade. Originally attached to Gore Verbinski, who envisioned a big‑budget, R‑rated version, the project stalled after the studio balked at the financial risk following the underperformance of the film adaptation of Watchmen.

In 2022, Netflix announced it had taken over the adaptation, but a subsequent leadership change led producer Roy Lee to describe the film as being reshaped into a more “personal” version. Lawrence, who has been occupied with other projects — including the 2025 release The Long Walk and the December 2024 film The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping — has indicated that work on BioShock could resume in 2027, though he cautioned that Hollywood schedules are fluid.

Screenwriters Michael Green, known for Blade Runner 2049, and Justin Rhodes, who contributed to Terminator: Dark Fate, are attached to the script. No casting announcements have been made.

Take‑Two, the owner of the BioShock intellectual property, has voiced eagerness for the film to materialize, noting that its release would align with upcoming new iterations of the game franchise. The company has previously confirmed that BioShock 4 remains in development, despite a partial overhaul and staff changes at developer Cloud Chamber.
