A technology analyst firm, Origina, has highlighted how enterprise software spending patterns are increasingly driven by vendor schedules rather than organizational needs. According to the company, up to 90 percent of IT budgets are typically allocated to maintaining existing systems, leaving only about 10 percent available for innovation. This dynamic, the firm notes, has contributed to enterprise software costs projected to rise 40 percent by 2027, with vendors identified as the primary driver of cost increases rather than customer demand.

Origina, which provides independent software maintenance and support services, argues that many organizations are adopting alternative approaches to better align technology management with business priorities. The firm cites examples including extending support for perpetual VMware licenses beyond standard vendor timelines, continuing to operate SAP environments past official support windows, and planning modernization initiatives based on business readiness rather than vendor-imposed deadlines. Such strategies, the company suggests, allow IT teams to maintain stability while retaining flexibility to adopt changes only when strategically justified, such as during mergers or operational shifts.

A key concern raised by Origina involves the misallocation of technical resources. Engineers with specialized knowledge of legacy systems, such as long-running SAP deployments or large-scale VMware infrastructures, are reportedly in limited supply. Frequent migrations tied to vendor roadmaps, the firm notes, often divert these professionals from innovation-focused projects that align with business objectives. Independent support models, according to Origina, can help free up capacity by reducing the need for disruptive transitions.

The firm also emphasizes the distinction between actual security risks and disclosed vulnerabilities. In 2025, over 48,000 software vulnerabilities were publicly reported, but Origina estimates that only about one percent were ever exploited in active attacks. Its OPTAS service focuses on prioritizing remediation efforts based on real-world threat exposure rather than volume of disclosures. This approach, the company states, allows organizations to address critical risks efficiently without being overwhelmed by routine vendor notifications.

Control over technology roadmaps, Origina suggests, ultimately enables organizations to make deliberate decisions about when to adopt new technologies, rather than being compelled to respond to external timelines. The firm encourages businesses to evaluate support options that preserve this autonomy, particularly when managing complex, long-lived software environments.
