Wizards of the Coast unveiled the first 2027 Universes Beyond expansion set for Magic: The Gathering at New York Comic Con, confirming a collaboration with Marvel that will feature characters such as Doctor Strange, Thor, Ghost Rider, Hela and Dormammu. The set, titled Darkhold Destiny, is scheduled for release on April 9 and will be available through major retailers and specialty game stores.

The expansion introduces normal and collector booster packs alongside four pre‑constructed commander decks that spotlight Marvel heroes and villains, including a Midnight Sons theme. During a one‑hour panel, several cards were demonstrated, among them Magic, which can transform into Darkchild, Gargantos and the titular Darkhold.

Darkhold Destiny presents an original storyline co‑created by designers from both Marvel and Wizards of the Coast. A newly created character for the set will also debut in a Marvel Infinity comic series slated for a February launch. The set incorporates new mechanics, including Vengeance, an Adventure‑style feature that permits casting spells from the graveyard and returning attached permanents to the battlefield, and the reintroduction of the Arcane subtype for spells.

The announcement marks the first time a Marvel‑themed Universes Beyond set has been revealed for Magic: The Gathering, integrating characters from Marvel’s Darkhold comics into the game’s collectible card ecosystem.
