Ukrainian forces conducted a drone strike that destroyed a data center operated by Yandex, Russia's largest technology company often compared to Google.

The facility, located in the Moscow region, supported a range of Russian online services including a dating platform, a real estate marketplace, a self-publishing service, and the official website of Zenit, the most successful club in the Russian Premier League.

This attack forms part of a broader pattern in which critical infrastructure has become a focal point of the conflict. Since 2022, both sides have increasingly targeted digital and physical infrastructure, with data centers emerging as strategic objectives.

In February 2026, Iranian drones targeted multiple Amazon data centers in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates following military strikes against Iran by the United States and Israel. Similarly, in 2022, Russian forces began systematic attacks on Ukraine’s power grid, transportation networks, and residential areas after launching a full-scale invasion.

Ukraine has faced challenges in defending against incoming missile and drone attacks due to limited interceptor capacity. In response, Ukrainian military units have expanded the scope and scale of their own drone operations, striking Russian military installations, supply routes, maritime assets in the Black Sea, and energy facilities.

During the summer of 2026, Ukrainian forces targeted warehouses used by Wildberries and Ozon, two major Russian e-commerce firms analogous to Amazon. Additional strikes have focused on commercial shipping in the Black Sea, including incidents on October 5 and 6 that resulted in the sinking of two vessels near the territorial waters of Romania and Bulgaria, both NATO members.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that these attacks were carried out by Russian forces and underscored the growing use of unmanned systems in modern warfare.

The conflict continues to evolve, with both sides adapting tactics in response to technological and strategic developments.
