Wizards of the Coast announced Magic: The Gathering Darkhold Destiny during a New York Comic Con panel, marking the third collaboration between the card game and Marvel. Unlike previous Marvel-themed sets that adapted existing Marvel storylines, Darkhold Destiny introduces an original narrative in which Doctor Strange, Thor and Ghost Rider confront invasions by Hela and Dormammu across the multiverse. The set incorporates new mechanics such as Vengeance, a graveyard-triggered ability resembling the Adventure keyword from Throne of Eldraine but with a darker twist.
The set is scheduled for release on April 8 of the following year. At the panel, Wizards revealed several product lines, including booster packs, collector boosters, prerelease packs, draft night packs and four commander decks themed around Strange Academy (WUB), Gods of Asgard (RGW), Midnight Sons (WB) and Lords of Hel (BR). Each deck will also receive a Collector’s Edition featuring entirely surge-foiled cards.
Two bundles — a standard version and an 'Arcanum' version — will include unique promotional cards, though pricing and availability details remain unspecified. Additional items announced include three Secret Lair drops tied to Doctor Doom, a countdown kit and a large box containing 30 cards, with variants in nonfoil, traditional foil and surge foil. The Secret Lair product is set to launch on November 2.
Basic lands in the set feature dual variants: one depicting the state before Hela and Dormammu’s invasion and another showing the aftermath. These lands include flavor text that advances the story. A new land card, Temple of Khonshu, enters tapped unless the player controls a Dimension, a card type that Wizards has not yet explained.
Arcane, a subtype last seen in the Kamigawa block, returns with new cards such as a black modal spell and a red spell titled Rise From the Nether that creates 3/1 creature tokens. The set also introduces Magik as a double-faced card, capable of transforming into Darkchild and gaining indestructibility when 4 life is paid.
The central artifact card, The Darkhold, costs three mana and allows players to place sin counters on it to draw cards, functioning as a darker counterpart to The One Ring. The thematic structure divides the set into Arcane (centered on Doctor Strange), Divine (focused on gods like Thor) and Dark Magic (aligned with villains such as Hela and Dormammu), though some heroes may also wield Dark Magic.
Wizards of the Coast has indicated that future Universes Beyond sets will continue, though details remain undisclosed. The company confirmed that new crossover comics will be published through Infinity Comics, with the first issue releasing in February and a follow-up near the April set launch.
Mark Rosewater presented the set alongside a physical replica of the Darkhold artifact, underscoring the narrative ambitions of the project. The panel concluded with audience applause following a teaser trailer for Darkhold Destiny, which reimagines Marvel characters within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. The set will include characters such as Moon Knight, Ghost Rider and Blade alongside traditional Magic creature types like vampires and dragons.
