Apple announced a second-generation HomePod mini on Tuesday, six years after the original model's launch. The new device introduces several hardware and software upgrades, including support for an AI-enhanced version of Siri and a more powerful processor.
The HomePod mini 2 features a new S10 chip, replacing the six-year-old S5 chip used in the first-generation device. This upgrade enables the inclusion of Siri AI functionality, which brings capabilities similar to those found in iOS 27, such as broader world knowledge, more natural conversational abilities, and improved music discovery features. Personal context integration will also allow users to query information from messages, emails, and other stored data.
The original HomePod mini will not receive Siri AI support, leaving it limited to the legacy Siri implementation. Apple has indicated that the AI features will roll out via a software update expected next month, rather than being available at launch.
Hardware changes include a reduction in far-field microphones from four to three, though Apple has not specified whether this will affect performance. The new model also supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 6 standards, offering connectivity improvements over the original's Wi-Fi 4 and Bluetooth 5.
Design updates feature new color options — blue, green, midnight, pink, and white — compared to the original's blue, midnight, orange, white, and yellow. The device also introduces revised Siri visual animations on its top surface.
A notable addition is Sound Glow, a feature that causes the top of the HomePod mini 2 to emit colored light synchronized with music playback. The lighting responds to bass and treble levels and can reflect album artwork from Now Playing, creating a dynamic visual experience.
Within Apple's ecosystem, the HomePod mini 2 offers exclusive features not present in the original model. It can serve as a default speaker for Mac computers, either as a standalone device or in stereo pairing, providing a more seamless integration than AirPlay. Additionally, when paired with the new fourth-generation Apple TV 4K, it supports a surround sound configuration capable of using up to four HomePod mini 2 units, allowing for flexible audio setups that can be combined with larger HomePod speakers.
The HomePod mini 2 is available for pre-order at $149 and is scheduled to ship on October 30. Apple has not provided detailed benchmarks on performance improvements beyond the chip upgrade and computational audio enhancements, which are described as analyzing music in real time to optimize sound characteristics.
The introduction marks a significant evolution in Apple's smart speaker lineup, particularly through the integration of on-device AI capabilities. Whether the upgrades justify a transition from the original model remains a matter for individual users to consider based on their needs and existing Apple ecosystem commitments.
