E Ink announced its newest color e-paper platform, Kaleido 4, on October 15. The technology increases color gamut volume to over 40,000 units, boosts white reflectance by 15 percent and improves contrast by 50 percent compared to the previous generation. It also supports video playback at up to 18 frames per second.

The first device to incorporate Kaleido 4 is Hanvon Technology’s M10C II smart e-paper notebook, described by the company as the world’s first end-product to use the platform. The M10C II features a new oxide TFT backplane that allows higher driving voltages and faster screen refresh rates. Combined with Hanvon’s proprietary "Enhanced Pressure Floating" technology and a T2000 timing controller, the device achieves 27 percent faster page turning and scrolling.

A redesigned front-light system enhances color reproduction, while the display includes 8,192 levels of pressure sensitivity when used with a wireless, battery-free digital pen. A micro-etched tempered-glass surface reduces glare and parallax, aiming to simulate a paper-like writing experience.

E Ink CEO Johnson Lee stated that color e-paper must deliver more than just color, emphasizing the platform’s role in expanding applications for next-generation displays. Hanvon Vice President Wang Jie added that the M10C II integrates optimizations across display performance, refresh speed, handwriting recognition, recording functions and AI capabilities, targeting use cases such as professional document review, meeting records and mobile office tools.

The platform supports a broader range of content types, including color PDFs, PowerPoint presentations, data charts, educational illustrations and engineering drawings. E Ink notes that its electrophoretic displays are used in e-readers, e-notes, electronic price tags and IoT devices, and that the company has committed to using 100 percent renewable energy by 2030 and achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2040.
