Nearly $1 billion in cryptocurrency positions were liquidated over the past 24 hours as bitcoin, ether and several smaller tokens declined.
CoinGlass data recorded $483 million in liquidations of bitcoin and ether futures contracts during the 24‑hour period ending Thursday morning. Ether traders accounted for $286 million of that total, while bitcoin traders faced $197 million in forced closures.
Ether’s price dropped more than 6 percent to about $2,350, whereas bitcoin slipped roughly 3 percent to around $81,000. XRP and Solana’s SOL each fell approximately 5 percent, and dogecoin declined about 6 percent.
The liquidations stemmed from leveraged bets that became undercollateralized as prices moved against the positions. When a trader’s collateral falls below a required threshold, the exchange automatically closes the position, often amplifying downward pressure on the market.
Ether’s futures market, valued at roughly $30 billion in outstanding contracts, was smaller than bitcoin’s $52 billion, yet it experienced a larger share of liquidated value. Smaller tokens such as Solana and Zcash also saw significant liquidations, with Solana futures losing about $31 million and Zcash contracts about $19 million.
Analysts noted that the market turbulence was linked to uncertainty surrounding the Federal Reserve’s upcoming interest‑rate decision, which has heightened risk aversion across financial assets.
The figures reflect the notional value of positions that were closed, not the cash actually lost by individual traders.
