A campaign to reintroduce Arkham Horror 2nd Edition as Arkham Horror Remastered is set to launch on Gamefound in the coming days. The project marks the first release under Fantasy Flight Games' Vault Series, an initiative to revive out-of-print titles from its catalog for modern audiences. The original 2nd Edition, released in 2005, had been out of print for years, with a third edition arriving in the interim.

The remastered version aims to streamline gameplay by reducing reliance on rulebook references. Designer Dane Beltrami noted that effects now use clearer wording and graphic design to minimize mid-game lookups. Key changes include merging the Arkham and Other World encounter phases into a single phase and refining visual cues, such as the terror track, to indicate thresholds. The artwork adopts a style consistent with the Arkham Horror Living Card Game, featuring updated illustrations like 'Tulzscha - The Green Flame' by Peter Polach, which centers the herald’s imagery while retaining its ominous elements.

Pledge tiers will allow backers to choose between bundled expansions or individual add-ons. However, the remastered edition will not be compatible with the original 2nd Edition due to updated card text and design. This incompatibility was confirmed by Beltrami, who stated the changes were intended to modernize the experience without altering core mechanics.

The game’s enduring appeal lies in its cooperative Lovecraftian theme and diverse investigators. Brand ambassador Wesley Mouri highlighted its role as a gateway game for many, while Beltrami cited personal favorites like Leo Anderson and Mandy Thompson for their distinct playstyles. Longtime fan Dexter Drake remains a popular choice among players, including Mouri, who referenced his own Halloween costume inspired by the character.

The original Arkham Horror, designed by Richard Launius, will celebrate its 40th anniversary next year. The remastered release seeks to reintroduce the 2005 ruleset to both new and veteran players, with the goal of revitalizing interest in the franchise. Existing expansions will be available through the campaign, though specific details about their inclusion remain pending the launch.
