Eugenia Kuyda introduced Wabi, a new personal AI assistant designed to manage tasks and goals through shared, multi-threaded conversations.
The platform evolved from Kuyda's earlier work on Replika, the AI companion app. Twelve years ago, she presented IO, a prototype chatbot at TechCrunch Disrupt that functioned as a lifestyle concierge. IO, developed by her startup Luka, demonstrated early capabilities that foreshadowed modern large language models, though it operated with limited functionality compared to current systems.
Kuyda stepped down as CEO of Replika last year to establish Wabi. The company has now opened the platform to the public, enabling users to create multiple concurrent AI-managed threads for distinct purposes, such as health tracking or family coordination. Each thread supports customizable applications, like monitoring expenses or organizing travel plans.
Wabi's architecture emphasizes collaborative interaction. Unlike single-threaded AI assistants, which may degrade in performance over time due to context overload, Wabi's multi-threaded design allows users to compartmentalize discussions and share threads with others. For example, Kuyda described a shared thread with her partner that integrates tools for planning outings, tracking shared calendars, and suggesting books, while another thread supports family-focused tasks like monitoring a child's schedule or quizzing them on language skills.
Privacy and security measures include SOC 2 compliance, cloud-based infrastructure, and U.S.-based data storage. Access to sensitive information, such as email or financial details, is restricted to individual threads, with users retaining control over data shared within groups.
Kuyda described Wabi as an evolution of her original vision rather than a departure. The platform aims to address limitations in current AI assistants by enabling users to delegate complex workflows to AI agents without manual app development. Features like automatic thread generation upon email integration and user-requested custom apps reflect this shift toward reducing user effort.
While Wabi remains free, the company has not finalized a revenue model. It is exploring additional funding, though specific timelines or investor details have not been disclosed. Kuyda emphasized that the platform's core objective is to enhance how people interact with AI in both personal and collaborative contexts, stating, 'AI can bring people together, even when it comes to just helping you spend time better together in real life.'
The launch underscores growing interest in AI-driven personalization, though challenges around context retention, hallucination, and safety persist as the technology matures.
