An independent developer using the handle chicanogoth on Instagram has created a playable prototype that adapts Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil film into a retro-styled video game. The project, shared through social media updates, features fixed camera angles and a polygonal aesthetic reminiscent of early Resident Evil titles.
The game centers on a character named Bryan Hodukavich, who navigates a scene involving an infected Doberman Pinscher. Visual elements include a crashed police cruiser with flashing emergency lights, rendered in a style that evokes the original PlayStation-era games. The developer incorporated animation assets from existing libraries and referenced the Cerberus enemy design from Resident Evil 2 for the infected dog model.
In a later update posted on October 19, chicanogoth demonstrated death and injury sequences for the player character, as well as a cinematic opening sequence depicting the aftermath of the police cruiser collision. The developer described the project as a personal learning experience and expressed gratitude for community feedback, noting it was their first sustained development effort.
The prototype has attracted attention for its nostalgic design choices and faithful recreation of specific film moments. Online discussions have included suggestions to incorporate the character’s limited combat accuracy as a stylistic feature, while others have inquired about potential voice acting contributions.
This fan initiative follows increased interest in adaptations of the Resident Evil franchise, including a short film by actor Chandler Riggs based on Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. That project received acknowledgment from Resident Evil 7 director Koshi Nakanishi on social media.
Cregger’s film, which earned over $360 million globally, ranks as the 10th highest-grossing video game adaptation in history. Its box office performance exceeds the combined earnings of Cregger’s prior films, though no official sequel has been announced.
