Rockstar Games gave its GTA 6 development team the freedom to insert details they found appealing, even when those elements were not part of a formal plan. Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, who visited Rockstar North's Edinburgh studio, noted that the studio's leadership did not possess complete knowledge of every feature added during the decade‑long project. He observed that granting large teams the ability to flesh out individual street corners or NPC behaviors is common in open‑world titles, and the extensive budget and schedule for GTA 6 amplified that approach.
In an interview, Rockstar producer Aaron Garbut stated, “There’s no one person that has this whole thing in their head.” He referenced a specific example from Red Dead Redemption 2: the testicles of horses in the game reacted realistically to temperature changes, shrinking in colder weather. Garbut explained that this feature was not listed as a priority item and was not assigned as extra work; rather, a team member found time to implement it, and a similar organic process is expected in GTA 6.
Development also involved attempts to replace the traditional weapon wheel. The team experimented with trays, webs and other UI concepts for months, ultimately discarding those ideas and reverting to a familiar wheel structure. Schreier reported that between roughly 2019 and 2022 the project faced “dark moments,” with some designers feeling they were “treading water.” The effort to blend the realism of Red Dead Redemption with GTA’s more arcade‑style mechanics contributed to those challenges.
Some artists have been involved with GTA 6 since 2015, two years after GTA 5’s launch, and began field research in Miami around that time to reimagine Vice City. The game is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, exactly one month from the current date. Rockstar has released new screenshots and a launch trailer to build anticipation.
