Albanese’s remarks come amid a broader debate over the balance between attracting datacentre investment and safeguarding the rights of creators. The proposed changes would allow AI developers to use copyrighted works without permission under certain conditions.

Author Anna Funder likened the situation to being a victim of crime while testifying before a parliamentary committee, saying technology firms have extensively used her literary works for profit. Artists have voiced opposition to the potential amendments, while the Labor Party is divided on the policy direction.
