Milya Mohd Asyraf, a 22‑year‑old University of Plymouth engineering student, has created a £30 device that translates speech into text and projects it onto glasses. The device was developed over six months as part of her electrical and electronic engineering degree. It uses a microphone to capture speech, an AI model to translate the audio in real time, and a microcontroller to send the text via Wi‑Fi to a small screen attached to a clip‑on box. The screen displays the text through a mirror, lens and reflector, appearing as subtitles in the user’s field of view. Accuracy improves when the system is programmed for a specific language, and the device also provides transcription for people who are hard of hearing. Asyraf said the design relies on affordable recycled materials and aims to avoid collecting personal data. She hopes the technology will help people overcome communication barriers without the high cost of existing smart glasses. When asked for advice, she recommended that aspiring designers begin immediately with simple ideas and write them down. Further testing will determine how widely the prototype can be applied.
