On June 25, an Iranian drone attacked a cargo ship sailing through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments. No casualties were reported, but the incident marked the latest in a series of confrontations between the United States and Iran.

The two nations had previously signed a tentative agreement intended to ease tensions and reopen the strait, which had been closed after a U.S.-Israeli strike in late February. The deal allowed Iran to manage traffic through the waterway while the United States insisted that the strait remain open and toll‑free. Disagreements emerged over Iran’s claim to control the strait and the use of an alternative route that is overseen by U.S. forces.

In response to the drone attack, the United States conducted airstrikes on Iranian missile and drone sites and coastal radar installations on June 26. The following day, Iran attacked a tanker using the alternative route, prompting additional U.S. strikes. Iran then targeted vessels near Kuwait and Bahrain, both of which host American military personnel.

U.S. forces also revoked a waiver that had permitted Iran to sell oil for U.S. dollars, reimposed sanctions on Iran’s oil exports, and expanded strikes to northern Iran, hitting bridges and power stations in the south. Iranian officials reported at least 50 deaths and more than 500 injuries from the renewed hostilities. President Donald Trump said the strikes were a response to the attacks on shipping and warned that further incidents could lead to harsher actions, while stating that any military escalation would be swift.

Both sides withdrew from direct talks and sent delegations to Qatar for mediation, but no formal meeting took place. As tensions persist, the interim agreement appears increasingly fragile, and the possibility of a broader conflict remains a concern.
