Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, a Cuban artist who served five years in prison, arrived in the United States on Saturday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed. Alcántara cofounded Cuba’s San Isidro Movement, a collective of artists and intellectuals that has faced repeated repression by Cuban authorities, according to Amnesty International. Rubio said the Cuban government should immediately release more than 700 political prisoners currently detained, and called for their immediate release. The United States has increased economic and diplomatic pressure on Cuba, imposing sanctions on the Ministry of Tourism and related state-owned enterprises, and restricting oil supplies that have contributed to repeated power outages affecting millions. Rubio added that the Trump administration remains committed to supporting the Cuban people’s pursuit of freedom. Alcántara’s arrival represents a significant moment for Cuban dissidents, while the status of political prisoners in Cuba remains unresolved.
