US Central Command announced that it carried out air strikes Saturday night against Iranian coastal surveillance and air defence installations, targeting facilities used by the Revolutionary Guard, which it said were responsible for a recent attack that killed two US service members in Jordan and left one missing.
The exchange marks the eighth consecutive night of hostilities between the United States and Iran, after Washington reimposed a blockade on Iranian ports and Iran declared the Strait of Hormuz closed, ending a preliminary ceasefire reached in June.
Centcom said the strikes hit Iranian military capabilities, while Iranian state media reported that Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz had been struck. Iran's army said it launched drone attacks on two US bases in Kuwait, and the IRGC‑affiliated Tasnim news agency said large‑scale kamikaze drone attacks targeted a US depot at Camp Udairi and Ali Al Salem Air Base. The United States said the operations were intended to degrade Iran's ability to threaten shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and to punish IRGC forces for the Jordan attack. In a statement, Centcom noted that two US service members were killed and one remained missing, and said it would withhold their identities until families were notified. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth posted on X that the fallen "hero[es]" had "stiffened our resolve." The US death toll in the conflict rose to 16 after a missing Navy pilot was declared dead earlier this month.
The previous ceasefire, brokered in June, unraveled after President Donald Trump said the agreement was "over" on July 8, and both sides continue to exchange attacks.
