Magic: The Gathering announced 35 new cards based on The Hobbit at a MagicCon: Amsterdam panel on July 18, 2026. The set is part of the Universes Beyond crossover that previously featured The Lord of the Rings.

Thorin Oakenshield appears as a legendary creature with the new Storied mechanic, which activates when a player controls three or more artifacts, legendary permanents, or sagas. Thorin grants ward one to artifacts and creatures.

Bifur, Melodic Rider doubles triggered abilities from Dwarves and adds +1/+1 counters. Bard the Bowman and Bard, King of Dale each provide abilities that strengthen creatures, draw cards, and create tokens. Gandalf, Goblin's Bane is a mono‑red adventure creature with a Flameshape adventure and a damage‑dealing effect. Gollum, Riddle Master, Thranduil, the Elvenking, Silvan Reveler, The Chief Warg, and Bolg of the North are also included.

Several cards recreate scenes from the novel. Burn, Burn, Tree and Fern destroys creatures and artifacts before generating mana. The Eagles Are Coming! returns creatures to hand and creates Eagle tokens. Supper for Spiders turns dying creatures into Food artifacts. Sting, Bilbo's Sword becomes an Equipment card. Desolation of Smaug deals damage to non‑dragon creatures and adds mana for dragon spells.

Premium treatments include a borderless Dwarvish Language frame, the Book Cover series with alternate artwork styled after Tolkien editions, and the Dragon Hoard frame for select cards.

Two Scene Boxes, Crack the Plates and Treasures of Smaug, were also announced.

The full preview season will begin later in 2026, and the set is scheduled for release later that year.
