A report by the Ohio Immigrant Alliance identified 59 current and former Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection agents charged with sexual or violent offenses from 2007 through 2026.
The agencies, which employ roughly 50,000 personnel, are required to conduct comprehensive background investigations, yet officials say they do not review family court records, limiting oversight.
The report documented that 50 of the 59 cases involve sexual crimes, many against children, and that 25 cases occurred in 2025 and 2026, compared with six in 2020. It cited earlier incidents, including a 2026 sentencing of a background‑check employee for soliciting prostitution with a minor and a 2000 conviction of a former Operation Predator leader for indecent exposure to a minor, who kept his pension after losing his job. Additional investigations by the Southern Border Communities Coalition and journalist John Carlos Frey identified over 170 alleged sexual assaults by immigration agents over five decades, and a 2024 incident at the Border Patrol Academy involved an officer still listed as a union representative.
Lynn Tramonte, executive director of the Ohio Immigrant Alliance, said the pattern reflects a disturbing record of abuse and urged the federal government to freeze the enforcement budget, estimated at $152 billion by the Senate Budget Committee. The Department of Homeland Security stated it takes allegations of misconduct seriously and works to uphold the rule of law, while the full scope of the issue remains unclear.
