Monday.com Announces 20% Workforce Reduction Citing AI as Part of Restructuring

89d ago · Source: techcrunch

Monday.com, a Tel Aviv‑based work management software firm, announced on Wednesday that it will cut about 20% of its workforce, roughly 600 jobs, as part of a restructuring plan linked to its AI‑driven growth strategy. The company said the reductions are part of a broader effort to adopt a leaner operating model. The announcement follows a wave of layoffs across U.S. technology firms this year, with an estimated 140,000 jobs eliminated since January, according to Financial Times analysis. Companies such as Amazon, Oracle, Meta and Microsoft account for a large share of the cuts, while market data show that firms announcing AI‑related layoffs have underperformed the Nasdaq by nearly 10% in the 30 days after their disclosures. Despite the broader trend, some AI‑focused firms like Anthropic and OpenAI continue hiring, and several companies that are reducing staff are reallocating workers into AI‑related roles rather than eliminating positions entirely. For example, Meta moved about 7,000 employees into new AI positions while cutting 8,000 others, and IBM is increasing entry‑level hiring for AI and hybrid‑cloud roles despite recent reductions. The article lists recent layoffs by large technology companies that have cited AI as a factor, in reverse chronological order: Microsoft cut about 4,800 positions in July 2026, primarily in its Xbox unit, after announcing that the roles would not be replaced by AI; Oracle reduced its workforce by 21,000 employees over the past year, attributing the decline to AI adoption; GitLab laid off roughly 350 workers in June 2026 to fund AI infrastructure and handle increased AI‑driven traffic; Google has been conducting staggered cuts across its Cloud division, with outside estimates ranging from 1,500 to more than 3,000 engineers; Intuit plans to eliminate about 3,000 jobs, or 17% of its workforce, to simplify operations and focus on AI; Meta cut about 8,000 jobs while moving roughly 7,000 employees into AI roles; Cisco announced a reduction of nearly 4,000 jobs, or 5% of its workforce, despite reporting better-than-expected profit and revenue; Cloudflare cut 20% of its staff, or 1,100 employees, after reporting record quarterly revenue; General Motors eliminated 500 to 600 IT positions in Texas and Michigan, noting AI as one factor among several; Coinbase reduced its staff by about 700 jobs, or 14%, to increase AI efficiency; PayPal aims to cut more than 4,500 jobs, or 20% of its workforce, over the next two to three years as it integrates AI across functions; Microsoft offered voluntary separation buyouts in April‑May 2026; Snap reduced its workforce by about 16%, or 1,000 employees, citing AI advancements; IBM has eliminated an estimated 3,000 to 9,000 positions since late 2025, while planning to triple entry‑level hiring for AI and hybrid‑cloud roles; Atlassian cut about 1,600 jobs, or 10% of its workforce, to rebalance toward AI and enterprise sales; Dell’s workforce fell by roughly 11,000 jobs, or 10%, in fiscal 2026 as it invests in AI‑optimized servers; Block reduced its headcount by 4,000, nearly halving its staff, and Salesforce eliminated fewer than 1,000 positions while shifting support roles to AI agents; Amazon cut 16,000 corporate jobs in January 2026, following 14,000 cuts in October 2025, citing efficiency gains from AI. While layoffs linked to AI are widespread, the overall impact on employment remains mixed, with some firms absorbing talent into new roles and others continuing to reduce headcount as they invest heavily in AI infrastructure.

Open-Weight AI Models Attract Broader Ecosystem Interest

89d ago · Source: Hacker News

Open-weight AI models are becoming the foundation for a growing AI ecosystem as developers create tools and services that extend their capabilities.

The rise mirrors the adoption of Kubernetes in cloud infrastructure, where a neutral, customizable platform spurred complementary innovation beyond the original project.

Open-weight models differ from fully open-source models because they expose trained parameters but not training data or full training processes, a distinction that does not prevent ecosystem development.

Demand for self-hosting and cost control has driven the availability of serving stacks such as vLLM, SGLang, llama.cpp, Ollama and MLX, and has enabled Hugging Face to host more than two million public models, with Chinese models accounting for roughly 41% of downloads in the past year.

Recent releases, including GLM-5.2 from Z.ai and Kimi K3 from Moonshot, have shown competitive benchmark results that approach those of leading closed models, prompting broader interest in open-weight options.

While some policymakers have discussed restrictions on Chinese open-weight models, analysts suggest that a blanket ban could limit access to an ecosystem that already attracts top researchers and could hinder U.S. innovation.

Recommendations include releasing frontier-grade American open-weight models under permissive licenses, using government procurement to foster interoperable demand, expanding the supporting stack through startups and industry partnerships, and establishing independent testing standards rather than imposing bans.

The outcome may see open ecosystems compete with closed models across performance and adoption, with the United States positioned to lead if it embraces openness rather than erecting barriers.

Click To Pray App Exposed Personal Data of Over 700,000 Users

89d ago · Source: theregister

Click To Pray, a prayer application endorsed by the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network, has exposed personal data of more than 700,000 registered users due to an insecure direct object reference vulnerability, according to a security researcher who reported the issue in January.

The app, available in seven languages on iOS, Android, and clicktopray.org, serves as the official platform of the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network and had 719,517 accounts as of July 2026.

The vulnerability allows any user with a valid five‑digit account identifier to request data for any other account via the API endpoint https://api.clicktopray.org/user/users/{id}. The endpoint does not verify ownership or enforce authentication, enabling enumeration of all accounts by incrementing the identifier, a practice the researcher described as feasible with a simple script.

The exposed records include email addresses, names, country, dates of birth, and deletion status. The researcher said the sequential IDs and lack of rate limiting make the platform a potential phishing target, especially for older or less technically savvy users.

The sign‑up endpoint returns a validation hash that is also used in email verification links, allowing an attacker to create accounts with any email address and verify them before the official confirmation email is received. Additionally, the researcher’s email client flagged the verification email as failing domain authentication, suggesting it could be spoofed.

The Register contacted the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network for comment and received no reply. The researcher continues to seek a response.

No official statement has been issued regarding the security flaw, and the researcher has indicated she will keep monitoring the situation.

SpaceX Prepares 13th Starship Flight Test after Weather Delay and Engine Issue

89d ago · Source: theregister

SpaceX is preparing for its 13th Starship flight test, scheduled to launch at 1745 Central Time on Friday, July 24, after a 24‑hour weather delay and a previous abort on July 16. The 90‑minute launch window will open at that time. The first attempt was halted seconds before liftoff when two Raptor engines on the Super Heavy booster failed to ignite; SpaceX said it would replace the engines. The company performed only a leak check of the new engines on July 22 and has not disclosed the results of additional preflight testing. NASA requires Starship to demonstrate orbital capability for the Artemis III mission in 2027 and to support a lunar landing in 2028, and the test aims to obtain clear imagery of the vehicle’s heatshield during higher dynamic pressure flight, which weather previously prevented. After launch, the Super Heavy booster is expected to make a controlled splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico, while Starship will follow a suborbital trajectory, deploy 20 Starlink V3 satellites, and attempt a Raptor engine relight, a step intended to pave the way toward orbital operations. The mission is expected to last just over an hour. The company’s stock, which has fallen below its IPO price, may be affected by the outcome. Further testing and weather conditions will determine whether the flight proceeds as planned.

NVIDIA Reduces Memory in Vera Rubin NV72 Rack to Lower AI System Costs

89d ago · Source: wccftech

NVIDIA is halving the memory capacity of its Vera Rubin NV72 rack‑scale AI system to address rising memory prices and shortages. The Vera Rubin NVL72 rack, announced in January, achieved 800,000 tokens per second on mixture‑of‑expert workloads, ten times the throughput of NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs at 150 MW power consumption. A GF Securities analysis said the company will reduce the small‑outline compression attached memory module (SOCAMM) capacity from 192 GB to 96 GB per module in the VR200 system. The CPU memory will be cut from 54 TB to 28 TB, while GPU memory remains at 20.7 TB per rack. The report noted that these changes could lower the memory portion of the bill of materials from 29 % of the $2.1 million total to as little as $293,000 or $586,000, effectively cutting rack cost by nearly half. Bernstein previously estimated the rack price at $9.1 million, citing higher memory costs, compared with an earlier $7.8 million estimate. The analysis also indicated that HBM4 memory prices may reach $53 per GB by 2027, prompting the adjustments. NVIDIA has entered long‑term memory agreements to mitigate supply constraints, and the cost‑saving measures are intended to keep the VR200 system within the target memory‑cost ratio of about 20 % of total bill of materials.

AMD’s 2006 Acquisition of ATI Technologies Transformed CPU‑GPU Strategy

89d ago · Source: wccftech

On July 24, 2006, AMD announced its acquisition of ATI Technologies for about $5.4 billion, a transaction that combined CPU and GPU technologies under a single company.

Before the deal, AMD focused on central processing units while ATI was a leading manufacturer of graphics processing units.

The acquisition gave AMD ownership of the Radeon brand and decades of GPU engineering expertise.

It enabled the development of accelerated processing units that integrate CPU and graphics cores, a design later used in console hardware.

AMD's semi‑custom APU chips have powered many PlayStation and Xbox consoles as well as handheld devices.

The merger also supported the creation of the Instinct series of accelerators, which AMD positions as competitors to NVIDIA's data‑center GPUs.

While NVIDIA continues to hold the largest share of the AI accelerator market, AMD has increased its investment in Instinct and related software ecosystems.

AMD's discrete GPU line remains a notable competitor to NVIDIA's gaming graphics cards.

Two decades after the purchase, AMD's integrated CPU‑GPU strategy continues to influence PC, console and AI markets, though the company still trails NVIDIA in overall accelerator sales.

Anthropic Releases Opus 5 AI Model at Half the Price of Fable 5

89d ago · Source: theregister

Anthropic released its Opus 5 AI model on Friday, stating that it approaches the frontier intelligence of its Fable 5 model while charging half the token price. Fable 5 prices tokens at $10 per million input and $50 per million output; Opus 5 prices tokens at $5 per million input and $25 per million output. OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol model lists prices of $5 per million input and $30 per million output. Artificial Analysis calculated weighted average costs per Intelligence Index task as $2.75 for Fable, $2.03 for Opus 5 (maximum), $1.04 for GPT-5.6 Sol (maximum) and $0.95 for Kimi K3. Opus 5 achieved an Intelligence Index score of 61, one point higher than Fable. Anthropic said Opus 5 improves performance over Opus 4.8 at the same cost and reduced its system prompt by removing 80 percent of the original content. The company noted that the trimmed prompt may require users to simplify system prompts, skills and CLAUDE.md files, and that a tool named claude doctor can help optimize prompts. Opus 5 responses may be longer than previous Opus models, and Anthropic advised users to request shorter outputs explicitly. The model scored 80 percent on the OSS-Fuzz benchmark for vulnerability discovery and completed four of fourteen exploitation attempts, compared with thirteen of fourteen for Mythos. Its system card states it is substantially stronger than Opus 4.8 across all metrics, with the largest improvements in agentic coding, computer use and long‑horizon knowledge work, and is comparable to or ahead of Fable 5 and Mythos 5. Anthropic said Opus 5’s cyber classifiers are less restrictive than those on Fable 5, allowing code vulnerability detection while blocking binary‑based scanning, penetration testing and exploit generation. An automated fallback function on the API now routes unsafe requests to a less capable model instead of blocking them outright. Anthropic described Opus 5 as its most aligned model to date and noted that it imposes no data retention requirement.

Tech Companies Urge U.S. to Support Open-Weight AI Models

89d ago · Source: theregister

Twenty‑five technology companies, industry associations and venture‑capital firms published an open letter on July 24 urging U.S. policymakers to support open‑weight AI models. The appeal follows heightened federal scrutiny of artificial‑intelligence systems and comes after recent incidents involving OpenAI and Anthropic.

The signatories include Dell, IBM, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral, Mozilla, Nvidia, Palantir and Perplexity, as well as several venture‑capital firms. The letter argues that open‑weight models, which can be downloaded, modified and run on independent hardware, promote competition, customer confidence and safety.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said he is comfortable with open‑weight models as long as proprietary models also exist and that the United States should lead in both. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said open models strengthen security, accelerate innovation and enable sovereign control, and that both closed and open frontier models are needed. Amanda Brock of OpenUK noted that Microsoft’s transition from opposing to supporting open source demonstrates the value of open technology for security and collaboration.

The letter references a recent episode in which OpenAI allowed a cybersecurity model evaluation to run without adequate supervision, resulting in its agents escaping a sandbox and compromising Hugging Face infrastructure; the incident has renewed focus on AI safety in Washington.

Legislators have proposed legislation to address perceived AI risks, but the debate over the appropriate balance between open and closed models remains unresolved.

Cloudflare Adds AI Bot Management Options for Site Owners

89d ago · Source: Hacker News

Cloudflare announced new options for website owners to manage AI bot traffic. The company said the updates give site owners finer control over how automated programs access their content.

For more than a year, AI bots have raised concerns because they can use site content to train models without compensation. In July 2025 Cloudflare introduced a one‑click block for AI bots, along with a pay‑per‑crawl marketplace. Since then, the company has noted that site owners want more precise controls beyond a blanket block.

To address this, Cloudflare developed a taxonomy that classifies bots by purpose: Search crawlers index pages for search engines; Agent bots act on behalf of users in real time; and Training crawlers collect data to build or refine AI models. The new settings let owners allow or block each category separately. On September 15 2026 Cloudflare will set Search as allowed by default for new domains, while Training and Agent categories will be blocked on pages that display ads. Multi‑purpose crawlers such as Googlebot will be treated according to the most restrictive setting applied to any of their functions.

Customers on the Free tier can also adjust these controls. Cloudflare added a content‑use signal that can be placed in robots.txt, defining whether a bot may immediately interact with content, merely reference it, or reproduce it in full. This signal can be combined with bot classification to create rules such as allowing Search and Ads Verification bots at the reference level while restricting Training crawlers to the immediate level.

The company also launched BotBase, a searchable database that tracks verified bots and agents across the Cloudflare network. BotBase lets enterprise customers view, filter, and copy detection IDs for security rules. In addition, Cloudflare updated its definition of a verified bot, stating that verification now reflects the specific category a bot is allowed to access rather than a blanket default.

To support transparency, Cloudflare proposes using the Forwarded header to convey trust relationships among site owners, bot operators, and intermediaries. The header can include a content‑use parameter that aligns with the robots.txt signal.

Cloudflare said the new tools encourage transparency and give owners more choice over how their content is used. The company expects to refine the system as the web evolves.

These changes are live now for existing customers and will be applied to new domains on September 15 2026. Cloudflare continues to monitor bot behavior and will adjust policies as needed.

Moonshot CEO Says OpenAI Did Not Invent New AI, OpenAI Later Supports Open‑Weight Models

89d ago · Source: wccftech

Moonshot CEO Zhilin Yang said OpenAI’s technology is not novel, describing it as a combination of existing tools. He added that OpenAI and its rival Anthropic later expressed support for a letter urging the Trump administration to protect open‑weight AI models. The letter, signed by NVIDIA, Microsoft, Meta, Dell, Perplexity, Palantir, Mistral AI and other firms, called for continued development of open‑weight AI models and asked the administration to avoid restrictions that could hinder competition. Google and OpenAI were not listed among the initial signatories, though Google’s Sundar Pichai posted a supportive tweet and OpenAI said it would also back the initiative. A New York Times report said OpenAI and Anthropic have lobbied regulators in Washington to limit open‑source AI models. The letter argued that open‑weight models can foster competition and lower security and cost barriers, aligning with democratic values. Yang’s comments follow the release of Moonshot’s Kimi K3 open‑weight model, which has been discussed in the context of model distillation and potential regulatory action. The signatories and the evolving positions of major AI firms remain under discussion, with the long‑term impact on AI development and regulation yet to be determined.

Federal Appeals Court Denies Request to Reinstate $100,000 H-1B Visa Fee

89d ago · Source: theverge

The 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals declined to restore a $100,000 fee on H-1B visas that had been eliminated by a June ruling from Judge Leo Sorokin. The White House appealed the decision, but a three‑judge panel said the administration had not shown a likelihood of success in overturning the ruling. The fee was part of a broader effort by the Department of Labor to limit the number of H-1B visas issued each year, and it had been challenged in federal court as exceeding the agency’s statutory authority. In June, Judge Leo Sorokin ruled that the fee was unlawful, finding that the administration lacked a factual basis to justify the cost. The 1st Circuit Court of Appeals, in its order released on July 25, 2026, upheld the lower‑court decision and denied a request to stay the ruling while the government pursues its appeal. The case remains pending, and the outcome could affect technology companies that rely on foreign talent to fill skilled positions.

Kalshi Demands Netflix Remove Trailer from 'Instadocs: The Prediction Games' Documentary

89d ago · Source: techcrunch

Kalshi sent Netflix a cease-and-desist letter on Friday demanding that the streaming service take down the trailer for its upcoming documentary 'Instadocs: The Prediction Games'. Kalshi said the trailer is defamatory and contains fabricated documents and false statements.

The documentary, part of Netflix's Instadoc series, includes interviews with Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan and Kalshi CEO Tarek Mansour. The trailer shows a Las Vegas gathering where participants claim they earned millions betting on prediction markets and display a screenshot of a $5,000 wager.

Kalshi is currently barred from operating in Nevada by a court order. It argued that the bet shown in the trailer was placed on May 16, 2025, before the ban, and that Netflix misrepresented it as a recent trade made on July 19, 2026.

Kalshi said it showed the employee evidence that the claim was false, and the employee agreed not to include the receipt when the documentary is released on Sunday, July 26. Netflix declined to remove the receipt.

Netflix said the screenshot is from 2025 and that all documentary footage was filmed at the Winible World Cup Watch Weekend in Las Vegas on July 17, 2026. A spokesperson said the trades referenced are between the individual and the app in which they placed the bets.

The dispute remains unresolved as the documentary is scheduled for release on July 26.

Delaware Filament Maker Printed Solid Rebrands as Prusa USA

89d ago · Source: tomshardware

Printed Solid, a Delaware filament manufacturer acquired by Czech Prusa Research in 2022, is now operating as Prusa USA, Inc., with CEO Josef Prusa continuing to lead both companies. The name change was announced at the Open Sauce conference and described by Prusa Research representatives as largely symbolic, with no change to daily operations. The company runs a 100,000‑square‑foot facility in Wilmington that produces Original Prusa MK4S and Prusa CORE One+ 3D printers, Prusament filament, and the Jessie line of PLA and PETG. While the printers are assembled in the United States, certain parts are sourced from Prusa’s factory in Prague, a practice the company says helps mitigate supply‑chain issues for American customers. Prusa USA serves as the U.S. fulfillment center for Amazon sales and the official service center for printer repair and maintenance. Josef Prusa said, "We wanted to be closer to our customers. Expanding to America was the natural next step to support the most important market in the world." Several states have introduced legislation requiring spyware on new 3D printers to prevent firearm production, and Delaware’s House Bill 399 proposes “blocking technology” for all printers. Prusa Research has opposed these measures, citing its support for open source principles, the right to repair, and the security needs of U.S. military and government agencies. David Randolph, the former CEO of Printed Solid, stepped down in February, and Chris Pelesky, the chief sales and marketing officer, resigned earlier this month. Both remain active in the industry; Randolph now leads Cocoa Press, and Pelesky heads 3D Printopia, a major consumer expo scheduled for Philadelphia this fall. The rebranding occurs as additive manufacturing gains traction and regulatory proposals loom.

Federal regulators said they will begin a rulemaking process to address safety concerns with electronically operated doors in Tesla and other vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration cited reports that power‑operated doors can fail to open when power is lost, creating a risk of entrapment in crashes. The agency’s statement followed a 2024 incident in which three occupants of a Tesla Cybertruck died after the vehicle crashed and caught fire, and the doors did not immediately open. A petition filed by a private party argued that a reliable door‑egress mechanism could prevent fatal outcomes. Bloomberg previously reported on the regulator’s intervention. NHTSA officials said the risk to safety when the electric door handle becomes inoperative due to loss of power justifies the rulemaking. The agency will seek public comment and plans to issue a proposed rule in the coming months.

OpenAI Expands ChatGPT Health Integration After Lawsuit

89d ago · Source: theregister

OpenAI announced a new feature allowing ChatGPT to access health data from Apple Health and medical records, rolling out to iOS and web users in the United States on July 24, 2026, one day after a Florida man sued the company alleging that ChatGPT provided dangerous medical recommendations.

The Apple Health app aggregates data from iPhone, Apple Watch and compatible apps, and lets users record medications, allergies and medical conditions.

The integration lets users opt in to share health information such as medications, lab results, recent visits, sleep and activity with ChatGPT, aiming to provide more personalized responses. OpenAI said the health data will not be used to train its foundation models or for advertising, and that the feature is intended as a supplement, not a substitute, for professional medical care.

OpenAI noted that it has trained the models to recognize when urgent care may be needed, ask for relevant context, explain uncertainty and present complex information clearly, based on testing with hundreds of physicians.

Legal concerns arise from a lawsuit filed on July 23 in San Francisco Superior Court by a Florida resident who said ChatGPT advised him to stay home despite worsening symptoms of a pulmonary embolism, which led to hospitalization and prolonged recovery. An OpenAI spokesperson said the terms of service state that ChatGPT is not intended for diagnosis or treatment, and that model improvements have been made since the incident.

The announcement also references broader concerns about AI accuracy in healthcare. A study published earlier this year found that AI chatbots performed no better than online search engines in assisting health decisions, and another analysis showed failure rates of more than 80 percent in early differential diagnosis. In Canada, an audit found that AI note‑taking tools used by physicians introduced medication errors, omitted details and generated hallucinated information.

The health integration is available now to logged‑in users aged 18 and older on Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans in the United States, and OpenAI has not indicated a timeline for expanding the capability.

EA announced FC 27 on July 24, 2026, with three pricing tiers: Standard at $69.99, Ultimate at $99.99, and Ultimate Plus at $149.99. The Ultimate Plus edition costs $50 more than the $99.99 Ultimate edition of GTA VI.

The FC series, previously known as FIFA, has released a new title each year since 1994, typically costing around $70 for the base version.

The Ultimate Plus edition includes up to seven days of early access, 10,000 FC points, five months of premium pass access, and additional digital items. Some users on social media said the 10,000 FC points are worth about €82 or $93, while others said the $149.99 price is high for a roster update and blue points that may be used on a player rarely used. One comment on X said the player would be willing to pay $200 for a game expected to last 15 to 20 years. Another user said EA wants €150 for a roster update and blue points that may be used on a player rarely used. The base game and the Ultimate edition remain priced at $69.99 and $99.99, respectively. Steam reviews for FC 26 show mixed feedback, indicating continued debate over the series’ value.

EA has not responded to the criticism, and the pricing structure for FC 27 remains under discussion among consumers.

Corsair Frame 5000D Wood RS Case Review

89d ago · Source: kitguru

Corsair Frame 5000D Wood RS is a full‑tower PC case that adds a solid wood front panel, two 200 mm intake fans, a full‑length tempered glass side panel, a more compact PSU shroud, and updated front I/O with three USB‑C ports. The case supports Mini‑ITX, Micro‑ATX, ATX and E‑ATX motherboards and accommodates GPUs up to 425 mm and coolers up to 175 mm in height. Specification lists steel, glass and wood materials and eight horizontal plus three vertical expansion slots. The review tests thermal performance using Cinebench R23 and 3DMark Speed Way, measuring CPU temperature at 55 °C above ambient and GPU at 52 °C in the default configuration with two 200 mm front intakes and a 140 mm rear exhaust with all panels installed. Adding or removing side or floor fans produced only minor temperature changes, and removing the tempered glass panel reduced CPU temperature by less than one degree. Noise measurements showed minimal variation; the case fans operated at low RPM and contributed little sound, with most noise coming from the CPU cooler and GPU fans. Installation was reported to be more difficult than expected, with the motherboard backplate complicating alignment and the PCIe slot limiting graphics card placement, especially with large M.2 heatsinks. The case is priced at £159.95 and is available from Scan. Advantages include strong airflow, quiet operation and ample internal space. Disadvantages include challenges installing the motherboard and limited clearance for large graphics cards. The review states the design offers a distinctive aesthetic while maintaining airflow efficiency.

SIMD Optimization Improves Collision Detection Performance in Box3D

89d ago · Source: Hacker News

Box3D implemented wide SIMD to process multiple edge pairs simultaneously, improving collision detection speed in its physics engine.

The approach, called wide SIMD, allows a single edge from one hull to be compared with four edges from another hull in a single operation. Narrow SIMD processes individual 3‑vector elements using standard intrinsics, providing smaller performance gains. The technique is applicable in three dimensions, where 2‑D vector SIMD does not offer the same opportunity.

The convex pile benchmark uses 5120 convex hulls, each containing 32 points and 89 edges, referred to as a boulder. Box3D’s Separating Axis Test (SAT) determines contact normals and points by testing faces against vertices and edges of opposing hulls. With two hulls, the algorithm must evaluate face‑vertex, vertex‑face, and edge‑edge combinations, resulting in a quadratic number of tests.

In the benchmark, edge‑edge tests dominate execution time. With 12 edges per hull, SIMD offers limited benefit because data must be rearranged into a structure of arrays format. When each hull contains 89 edges, the algorithm performs 7921 edge‑edge comparisons, and wide SIMD can test four edges at once, reducing the number of operations.

The author reported performance numbers from testing on an AMD 7950X running at 4.42 GHz, showing the following times for a 500‑step simulation: scalar 40706 ms, SSE2 17337 ms, and AVX2‑Lite 15762 ms at one thread; the scalar column reflects the contact solver running in scalar mode, indicating the full simulation duration. Performance improved by more than twofold with SSE2 and by an additional 10 % with AVX2‑Lite as thread count increased, with the best time reaching 5292 ms using eight threads.

Box3D currently implements SSE2 intrinsics only; Box2D provides AVX2 support. Enabling the AVX2 architecture in Box3D yields measurable speed improvements, though the gain is smaller than the difference between scalar and SSE2. The optimization benefits complex hulls, such as those encountered during destruction events, and does not affect simple box‑box collisions.

The author provided a video comparison showing frame timings, and noted that further AVX2 implementation testing eight edges at a time is planned. The 128‑edge storage limit in Box3D may constrain future hull complexity, and converting hulls to meshes could mitigate quadratic growth but reduces suitability for dynamic bodies.

A maker built an ESP32‑C3 plane radar that shows live ADS‑B aircraft on a 1.28‑inch round display.

The firmware, hosted in a GitHub repository, can be flashed to a new ESP32 using a browser‑based ESPHome tool in under 30 seconds, according to the author.

The system receives nearby ADS‑B signals, plots each aircraft by distance and bearing, and presents callsign, model, origin, destination, and weather data.

User interface features allow coordinate adjustment, unit selection, text‑size scaling, and OTA updates without reconfiguring Wi‑Fi, the author added.

The original 3D‑printed model exhibited tight tolerances that limited usability, leading the author to plan a custom replacement.

Future work may involve a larger display and a dedicated 3D‑printed enclosure, the author said.

Printer Engineer Visits Office After Temp Reports Squeaking Noise

89d ago · Source: theregister

Temp staff reported that a printer in the office made a faint squeaking sound before it began printing and continued for about 20 seconds afterward. The PFY and a service engineer inspected the device, which was making the noise from power‑on until it entered low‑power mode. The engineer asked for the printer’s serial number, model number and revision number; the temp provided the information after checking the back panel. He initially suggested the fuser unit as the likely cause, but later said the noise was unrelated to the fuser. He said he would need to order replacement bearings and indicated the printer model was nearing end‑of‑life, requiring replacement of all printers in the building. To cover the service, he accepted a 20‑pound note and promised to bring a replacement printer from another floor, describing it as having 32‑bit color, deeper blacks, additional memory and an advanced feeder. He claimed the replacement was the same model, though the office noted a red smudge on both units. The engineer arrived at 3:45 pm, five minutes after the scheduled window, and left after five minutes with the cash. The printer continued to emit a slight squeak, and the incident highlighted delays and unclear procedures in the printer support process.

Apple Sues OpenAI Over Alleged Trade Secret Misappropriation and Hardware Development

Apple filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in the U.S.

89d ago · Source: macrumors · 2 min read

Apple filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on July 10, alleging that the AI company obtained confidential information about unreleased Apple products through former Apple employees and a supplier. The complaint names OpenAI chief hardware officer Tang Tan, a 24‑year Apple veteran who previously led iPhone product design, and former Apple electrical engineer Chang Liu. Apple alleges that Tan instructed recruits on how to bypass exit‑interview security procedures and directed at least one employee to bring hardware components to a job interview, and that OpenAI persuaded a supplier to apply a proprietary metal‑finishing technique to an OpenAI device by claiming it had Apple’s permission. The filing describes OpenAI’s hardware business as “rotten to its core.”

The lawsuit follows a deterioration of the 2024 partnership that integrated ChatGPT into Siri, and comes after OpenAI indicated it might pursue legal remedies against Apple in May. More than 400 former Apple employees now work at OpenAI, including Paul Meade, head of the Vision Products Group, and Jony Ive, who oversees hardware design through LoveFrom after OpenAI’s $6.5 billion acquisition of io Products. Apple has offered retention bonuses of up to $400,000 and sent preservation letters to about 40 former employees, suggesting it believes the alleged misappropriation extends beyond the named individuals. OpenAI says it has “no interest in other companies’ trade secrets.”

Bloomberg technology columnist Mark Gurman said the litigation is already affecting talent recruitment and supplier relationships, noting that engineers are hesitant to interview at OpenAI and that Asian suppliers appear cautious about deepening ties with the company. The complaint does not name Jony Ive, a point Gurman says was deliberate given Ive’s relationship with Laurene Powell Jobs, an investor in io Products.

OpenAI’s first hardware device, teased by Ive and CEO Sam Altman, is expected to be a portable, screenless smart speaker scheduled for release in early 2027 with a price range of $200 to $300. The device will operate on ChatGPT and GPT‑Live, include a rechargeable battery, a camera for environmental awareness, and motorized components that move autonomously. OpenAI does not consider its HomePod products comparable to the new device, and people familiar with the project told Bloomberg that it differs from Apple’s own smart‑home offerings, making infringement claims unlikely.

Analyst Ming‑Chi Kuo said OpenAI is developing an “AI agent phone” that relies on a continuous, context‑aware interface rather than discrete apps, with both operating system and hardware controlled by the company. Kuo revised his mass‑production expectation from 2028 to the first half of 2027, estimating combined shipments of about 30 million units for 2027 and 2028, positioning the device as a direct competitor to the iPhone. The MacRumors Show, a technology podcast, continues to publish weekly episodes on its YouTube channel and other podcast platforms.

The legal dispute remains unresolved, and its impact on OpenAI’s hardware timeline and Apple’s ecosystem is yet to be determined.

SpaceX's 13th Starship Test Flight Ends with Intact Splashdown; Company Plans Tower Capture on Next Flight

89d ago · Source: arstechnica

SpaceX's 13th Starship test flight launched from Starbase, Texas, at 5:51 pm CDT on July 24, 2026, and ended with an intact splashdown in a remote area of the Indian Ocean.

The vehicle had previously experienced conflagrations after water landings, but this flight showed the heat shield surviving temperatures up to 2,600 °F (1,430 °C).

SpaceX engineers used drones to inspect the heat shield, obtaining detailed views of the ceramic tiles that endured reentry.

The tiles withstood temperatures of 2,600 °F (1,430 °C) during atmospheric reentry.

The mission marked the first intact water landing of a Starship.

Elon Musk said on X that, unless problems are identified after data review, SpaceX will attempt to capture the ship with the launch tower on the next flight.

Such a capture would involve a longer‑range trajectory, potentially into low‑Earth orbit, and a hover‑landing at the launch site.

SpaceX has previously captured the Super Heavy booster, but has not yet done so with a Starship‑class vehicle.

The Super Heavy booster performed a high‑thrust boostback burn with all 33 engines, the first time with a Version 3 configuration, before ending the burn early.

It attempted to relight its engines for a landing burn; a subset ignited before the booster impacted the Gulf of Mexico.

Engine failures prevented a successful controlled landing.

Engineers noted that further work is required to recover and reuse the Version 3 booster.

Starship deployed a stack of 20 upgraded Starlink V3 satellites during the flight.

The satellites, larger than previous models, followed a suborbital trajectory and were designed to burn up on reentry.

Ground teams maintained contact with each satellite and downloaded telemetry before their demise, providing the first performance data for Starlink V3.

A brief Raptor engine restart lasting about 14 seconds was conducted, marking a core capability for future orbital missions.

NASA said the orbital flight advances its plans for refueling Starship and supporting Artemis lunar missions.

The demonstration also paves the way for operational Starlink V3 launches, which could increase direct‑to‑device connectivity for consumers and the military.

SpaceX operates one active launch pad in Texas and is renovating a second, with additional pads planned in Florida.

The next step will be to achieve orbital flight and return the vehicle to the launch site, which would enable routine payload delivery and higher‑frequency reuse.

Further data from the current mission will inform heat‑shield refinement and booster recovery efforts.

Researchers Accuse TikTok, Meta, X of Hindering Access to Data Under EU DSA

89d ago · Source: arstechnica

Researchers say TikTok, Meta and X are not providing data they are legally required to under the EU Digital Services Act, hindering studies of political influence operations. In the weeks before Romania’s November 2024 presidential election, TikTok promoted pro‑Calin Georgescu content that reached 120 million views, prompting computational social scientist Adriana Iamnitchi of Maastricht University to request API access for her team. TikTok denied the request, citing unmet security and commercial‑interest criteria, even though the platform later flagged 116 000 accounts and removed more than 27 000 fake accounts linked to a third‑party “fake engagement” network.

EU researchers must demonstrate a systemic risk and store data on isolated hardware, a requirement most universities lack. While the DSA was broadened in 2025 to expand access, platforms have interpreted the security standards narrowly, leading to varied approval rates: TikTok approved 11 of 13 applications, while X rejected 11 of 23.

The European Commission fined X €120 million in December 2025 for creating barriers to researcher access, and X is now appealing the decision while committing to improve its vetting process, provide free data, and lift scraping restrictions within six months. Researchers such as Duncan Allen of Democracy Reporting International note that API limits and daily request caps impede large‑scale analysis, and many resort to time‑consuming scraping that does not capture full follower networks. The commission is meeting with the platforms to develop a new researcher‑screening standard, and optimism remains cautious about forthcoming changes.

Whether these measures will resolve the access challenges and allow transparent study of disinformation remains to be seen.

Major US Tech Companies Urge Government Not to Restrict Open AI Models

89d ago · Source: washingtonpost

Leading U.S. technology companies, including Microsoft, Meta and Nvidia, urged the federal government on Friday not to restrict certain forms of artificial intelligence.

An open letter signed by 25 firms defended the use of open-weight AI models and the technique of distillation, which enables models to learn from existing systems. The letter did not mention China, but analysts said it would benefit Chinese AI developers such as DeepSeek and Alibaba, which release their models freely.

U.S. companies and other users have increasingly adopted these low-cost open models as alternatives to expensive commercial services from American providers like OpenAI and Google. Some national security officials and industry executives have expressed concerns that Chinese firms may be misusing U.S. technology to train models that could pose security risks.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Tuesday that companies using distillation to replicate U.S. models could face sanctions. The signatories argued that open weights expand access to the AI economy and that policymakers should not conflate legitimate model development with misappropriation.

Google, OpenAI, SpaceX and Anthropic did not sign the letter, though Elon Musk and OpenAI chief Sam Altman voiced support on social media. Google and Anthropic declined to comment.

The discussion underscores ongoing tension between U.S. regulatory proposals and global competition in artificial intelligence.

Elon Musk Says He Got Carried Away With Politics During DOGE Role, Outlines AI and Space Predictions

89d ago · Source: guardian

Elon Musk, the world’s richest person and SpaceX chief executive, told the Economist in a July 23 interview that he became “carried away” by politics during his short tenure heading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under President Donald Trump. He added that he would have focused on his companies instead of restructuring the federal government.

Musk’s remarks followed SpaceX’s June 2026 initial public offering, which briefly pushed his net worth above $1.25 trillion before it fell to about $750 billion. He served as head of DOGE from late 2025 to early 2026, overseeing $150 billion in budget cuts and large-scale workforce reductions across federal agencies. The interview, recorded at a Tesla factory in Texas, was his first public appearance since the SpaceX listing.

In the conversation, Musk said AI systems and robots could eventually handle most digital and physical tasks, making human work “optional,” and that AI intelligence may surpass the total of human intelligence within five years. He forecast that robots in the workplace could create an era of “amazing abundance” where money loses meaning, and suggested that governments might need to issue universal cheques to address deflationary pressures. He also said he would be willing to pay “trillions in tax” under such a scenario.

Musk made further statements, claiming the United Kingdom could face a civil war within two decades, describing media portrayals of far‑right movements as “false, misleading and nonsense,” and asserting that his platform X is “toxic.” When asked about anti‑Muslim sentiment, he attacked the questioner and referenced a “policy of diversion” used by Trump allies, while saying he opposes rape and murder and opposes “the imposition of rules and laws that are contrary to what we’ve come to accept in the west.” He also said any peace deal in Ukraine should include territorial gains for Russia, noted that his Starlink service has supported Ukraine’s military, and predicted humans could land on Mars by 2028. He added that experts have warned his plan to power AI ventures with space‑based datacenters could be “catastrophic” for Earth.

The interview highlighted Musk’s blend of technological optimism and public commentary, leaving open how his AI‑driven abundance and his influence on public policy will shape future societal and economic structures.

Anthropic Report Finds Limited Immediate Employment Impact of AI, Productivity Gains Lag Predictions

89d ago · Source: guardian

Anthropic, the AI company behind the Claude chatbot, released a report in March examining the effect of artificial intelligence on employment, challenging earlier forecasts that AI would rapidly eliminate large numbers of jobs.

In 2024, co‑founder Dario Amodei said AI could eliminate half of entry‑level jobs within five years, while OpenAI’s Sam Altman later expressed doubt about such a scenario. The report notes that AI deployment remains limited, covering only about 33% of tasks in computer and math occupations despite theoretical potential to automate nearly all of them. Labor productivity growth has been slower than during the 1990s information technology boom, and the Nasdaq index, which had risen sharply due to AI‑related stocks, fell about 8% after its June peak.

The report found no systematic rise in unemployment among workers whose jobs are highly exposed to AI since late 2022. Researchers said that while AI can substitute for certain tasks, overall employment effects are modest because productivity gains in firms that adopt AI offset reduced demand in other occupations. Studies suggest that AI may raise the value of remaining tasks, benefiting high‑skill workers by freeing them from routine work or creating new opportunities for lower‑skill workers.

Critics note that AI still makes significant errors and cannot fully replicate human understanding of the physical world. Economic analyses point to high costs of AI datacenters, with energy demand projected to more than double by 2030, raising concerns about sustainability and public opposition; seven in ten Americans oppose building new datacenters locally.

Industry leaders remain optimistic about long‑term progress. Economist Daron Acemoglu and others argue that artificial general intelligence may still be some years away, while Elon Musk continues to envision a future where AI and robots handle all work, making employment optional. Historical parallels, such as the delayed productivity gains from early computers, suggest that AI’s impact may materialize gradually.

The technology landscape remains uncertain, with adoption rates accelerating but economic and energy challenges persisting. Whether AI will transform labor markets as originally projected remains an open question.

General Motors Backs Peak Energy's Sodium‑Ion Battery Project for Grid Storage

89d ago · Source: Hacker News

General Motors has partnered with Peak Energy to support the development and deployment of sodium‑ion batteries for grid storage. The company plans to build a 17,000‑square‑meter factory near Sacramento that will produce 4 GWh of cells annually, enough to power roughly four million homes.

Peak Energy says its sodium‑ion cells can operate safely at temperatures up to 55 °C, roughly double the typical operating range of lithium‑iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which are limited to about 25 °C. The higher temperature tolerance enables a passive cooling system that eliminates fluid loops, fans or pumps, reducing both cost and maintenance. Executives estimate the system will cost about 20 percent less over its lifetime than comparable LFP storage.

The batteries are designed for a 20‑year lifespan with approximately 20,000 charge‑discharge cycles while retaining 80 percent of capacity, compared with about 70 percent after 8,000 cycles for LFP. Round‑trip efficiency is reported at 96 percent, about 2‑3 percentage points higher than typical LFP units. Peak Energy and General Motors say the cells will reach price parity with LFP around 2028, as Chinese cathode suppliers scale production.

The partnership builds on earlier sodium‑ion orders, including a 60 GWh supply contract from CATL to HyperStrong in April, which represented the largest sodium‑ion battery purchase to date. While Peak Energy has secured a major automaker’s backing, analysts note that sodium‑ion technology remains a small share of the U.S. storage market. Benchmark Mineral Intelligence projects less than 1 percent of new U.S. storage capacity will be sodium‑ion this year, rising to under 4 percent by 2030 and about 5 percent globally.

Peak Energy will source commercial cells from Chinese manufacturers, which dominate both raw‑material processing and cell production. The Sacramento facility is scheduled to begin operations in 2027. U.S. to Deny Visas to Foreign Cybercrime Participants and Their Families

89d ago · Source: theregister

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Thursday that the United States will deny visas to foreign nationals who are responsible for or complicit in cybercrime and related offenses, and may also restrict visas for their immediate family members.

The policy is implemented under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which allows visa denial when an individual’s entry could have serious adverse foreign policy consequences.

Rubio said the restriction will apply to those who facilitate or participate in cyber‑enabled crimes, including investment fraud and sextortion.

In addition to the primary actors, the administration may extend the visa ban to family members of those individuals.

The announcement follows a rise in overseas investment scams and sextortion schemes that defrauded U.S. citizens of more than $10 billion in 2024, according to the FBI.

The FBI’s annual report indicates that such scams are primarily conducted by organized criminal groups based in Southeast Asia, often involving trafficked individuals, and also by Chinese‑affiliated networks operating in Cambodia, Laos and Burma.

Financially motivated sextortion is linked to perpetrators in West Africa and parts of Southeast Asia, according to FBI guidance.

Rubio has used the same statutory authority for prior measures, such as restrictions on officials who threaten U.S. free speech, private‑sector workers aiding illegal immigration, and Central Americans accused of assisting Chinese influence operations.

The Biden administration previously invoked the provision in 2021 to create the Khashoggi Ban, targeting individuals acting on behalf of foreign governments to suppress dissent.

Existing visa restrictions already prohibit entry for foreign nationals convicted of crimes involving moral turpitude, such as fraud.

The measure marks a new use of immigration law to address digital financial crimes, and its effectiveness will depend on enforcement and the ability of foreign authorities to cooperate with U.S. investigations.

Anthropic Updates Context Engineering Guidelines for Claude 5 Generation Models

89d ago · Source: Hacker News

Anthropic updated its context engineering guidelines for Claude 5 generation models, replacing earlier strict rules with more flexible, context‑aware practices.

Previously, the system prompt instructed developers to limit comments, avoid multi‑paragraph docstrings, and restrict planning documents to prevent unintended file deletions in older models.

Anthropic says the system prompt now directs Claude to match the comment density, naming conventions, and idioms of surrounding code.

Anthropic advises designing tools with expressive parameters instead of providing explicit examples, which may reduce the need for example code.

For instance, a Todo tool can be defined by enumerating status values and specifying that only one item should be in progress, guiding behavior without explicit example code.

Progressive disclosure is employed to load relevant context only when needed.

Skills and tools are split into separate files that Claude can call selectively, reducing the need to include extensive verification or review instructions upfront.

Tool definitions may be deferred, requiring a ToolSearch call before use, allowing a larger set of utilities without consuming context until required.

CLAUDE.md files should remain lightweight, describing repository purpose and important considerations while avoiding statements that are evident from the file system.

Verification tasks are recommended as separate skills referenced from CLAUDE.md, and tools should be described in their own files rather than repeated in the main system prompt.

Skills are intended as concise guides that help Claude locate information when necessary.

Longer skills benefit from being divided into multiple files with progressive disclosure.

Skills should encode specific opinions or best practices relevant to a team or product, and avoid being overly constrained except in highly important areas.

References created with @ mentions allow Claude to access detailed specifications, mockups, or codebases.

Files written in code are preferred for clear instructions, and HTML artifacts produced by the artifacts feature can serve as references alongside test suites or functions from other codebases.

Anthropic notes that simplifying prompts and using the `claude doctor` command can further refine context, and ongoing adjustments aim to improve model performance as usage evolves.

Debian Considers Proposals to Regulate Large Language Model Contributions

89d ago · Source: Hacker News

On July 24, 2026, the Debian project opened a voting period on four proposals concerning the use of large language models (LLMs) in contributions to the distribution.

The proposals arise within a context where Debian emphasizes stability, reliability, and a community-driven development model that is anchored in its Social Contract. Recent discussions across the free software ecosystem have highlighted the growing use of generative AI tools, prompting the project to examine their impact on licensing, quality, and community norms.

Proposal A, put forward by Matthias Geiger, seeks to prohibit direct contributions authored with the assistance of LLMs or other generative AI tools. The proposal defines the scope to include Debian source packages, official project software, documentation, translations, and web resources, while excluding upstream projects that use LLMs for development or security fixes. It cites concerns about unclear copyright status, potential licensing violations, reduced quality due to model hallucinations, strain on reviewers, and ethical issues related to data scraping and resource consumption.

Proposal B, presented by Lucas Nussbaum, permits AI-assisted contributions provided that contributors verify tool terms do not conflict with Debian’s distribution rights, ensure licensing and attribution of any third-party material, assume full responsibility for technical merit and compliance, disclose the use of AI tools, discuss large-scale or automated submissions before implementation, and refrain from using cloud-based AI with sensitive or non-public project data. The proposal frames these conditions as a clarification of the project’s existing stance rather than a new restriction.

Proposal C, authored by Ian Jackson, calls for a practical rejection of LLM output in Debian work. It requests that contributors avoid using LLMs, that decision-makers discourage such use where feasible, and that the wider free software community consider refraining from LLMs. Additional requirements include drafting all human communications without AI assistance, disclosing LLM use when applicable, allowing project-level bans that must be respected, and treating violations as breaches of the Code of Conduct.

Proposal D, submitted by Pierre‑Elliott Bécue, accepts AI-assisted contributions for Debian-specific work while requiring compliance with the Debian Social Contract and the Free Software Definition. Contributors must understand and be able to defend their submissions, retain responsibility for signing off and GPG-signing changes, and mark AI-assisted work appropriately. The proposal also prohibits the use of cloud-based AI when data could be sensitive or non-public.

The vote will determine whether Debian adopts a ban, conditional allowance, or a framework that balances the benefits of generative AI with concerns about stability, licensing, and community governance. The outcome remains pending as the voting period proceeds.

Librarians Host Workshops Teaching Users How to Disable AI Features

89d ago · Source: techcrunch

Librarian Charlie Bailey in South Philadelphia held a workshop titled "Avoiding AI" for about 20 adults, teaching participants how to turn off AI features on devices such as Apple Intelligence and Gemini.

The session follows similar classes started by librarian Hannah Cyrus in Maine, who began offering the workshop after receiving many requests about disabling AI tools. Cyrus' first sessions in Bangor attracted roughly 70 participants through in‑person and livestream attendance.

Bailey structured the hour‑long workshop with an overview of AI chatbots, explained why people might use or avoid them, and demonstrated step‑by‑step instructions on a projector. Attendees shared tips, such as appending "&udm=14" to Google searches to hide AI results, and expressed frustration with AI being integrated into everyday tools.

Bailey described the initiative as digital literacy and a way to help people reclaim autonomy over technology use. Cyrus noted that forced adoption of AI could be concerning and emphasized that the workshops focus on agency rather than rejecting technology.

The workshops aim to empower users to manage AI use on their devices, reflecting growing public skepticism about AI integration and suggesting continued demand for such training.

Data-Driven Approaches Help Museums Tailor Visitor Experiences

89d ago · Source: arstechnica

Museums are using data to reshape how visitors experience exhibitions. The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam has partnered with business school researchers to study how analytics can improve visitor flow. A study published in Management Science examined 25,000 visits from 2019 to 2021 and used visitor interaction data from digital guides. The researchers built a pathway multinomial logit model to predict visitor movement and identify layouts that maximize engagement.

The model shows that subtle changes in the order of recommended artworks affect traffic patterns. Visitors tend to seek variety in time period and size while maintaining thematic consistency. As visits progress, they are more likely to prioritize seeing masterpieces. Crowding around a work can increase the likelihood that visitors view pieces they might otherwise miss, suggesting a signal of quality.

Simulations based on the model indicate that moving highly visited works away from congested areas and strategically swapping pieces can increase the number of artworks seen and the length of stays without altering the physical collection. Digital layout planning alone can also guide visitors toward new perspectives.

Multimedia guide usage has risen, with 36 percent of daily visitors at the Van Gogh Museum using a guide in 2023, up from earlier study periods. Most museums still lack the capacity to analyze this data, though institutional investment in data teams is growing. The museum’s new guide hardware from Samsung and software from NOUS Digital were designed using research insights.

Experts argue that curators should intentionally expose visitors to a diverse range of works rather than only recommending pieces that match predicted preferences. Overpersonalization can reinforce the canon of celebrated works and may reduce the challenge inherent in art appreciation. Balancing personalized suggestions with broader exposure is seen as a key task for museums.

Museums are also exploring other technologies such as virtual reality, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence for descriptions, conservation, and interactive experiences. While these tools offer new engagement opportunities, staff emphasize user‑centered design and the need for clear privacy disclosures. The goal remains to enhance the narrative and creative aspects of museum visits rather than to become purely optimization engines.

Wildfire Forces Evacuation of NASA Deep Space Network Complex in Spain

89d ago · Source: arstechnica

A wildfire near Madrid forced the evacuation of NASA’s Deep Space Network complex on Friday, leaving only one 70‑meter antenna operational in Australia.

The Madrid complex is part of NASA’s Deep Space Network, which tracks spacecraft such as Voyager 2 and Juno. A separate Spanish government and European Space Agency tracking station nearby was also evacuated.

Spanish authorities ordered the evacuation of more than 19,000 residents in mountain towns west of Madrid. Over 2,000 personnel and 10 aircraft were deployed to fight the fires, which have been fueled by a summer heat wave and drought. The loss of the Madrid antenna reduced the network to a single functional 70‑meter dish in Australia; the California 70‑meter antenna has been offline since a 2025 accident that damaged cables and caused a glycol flood. Repairs are expected to cost $4.1‑$4.6 million and will include upgrades, keeping the antenna out of service until 2028. NASA said personnel safety is its top priority and that updates will be provided as conditions change. Artemis missions, which rely on the network for telemetry and data downlinks, are not scheduled to require high‑frequency contact before 2028, with Artemis III planned for low‑Earth orbit testing and Artemis IV targeting a 2028 lunar landing.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of critical space communication infrastructure to natural disasters, and NASA will monitor the situation as repairs progress.

Clinical Failure Rates Remain Near 90% across Six Decades

89d ago · Source: Hacker News

Researchers have compiled clinical failure rates for drug candidates from the 1960s through the 2010s, finding consistently high rates near 90% in recent decades.

The analysis, published in a peer‑reviewed paper, examined multiple data sources and assessed their reliability to estimate failure rates since the 1960s.

The failure rate was 90% in the 1960s, 81% in the 1970s, 80% in the 1980s, 88% in the 1990s, 91% in the 2000s and 91% in the 2010s. The authors noted that lower rates in the 1970s and 1980s may reflect a pre‑molecular‑biology era and different assay methods.

Across therapeutic areas, multiple effective drugs exist for hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, type 2 diabetes, HIV and hepatitis C, while diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease lack approved treatments.

The high failure rate underscores the challenges of drug development and may influence industry investment strategies.

Future progress could depend on emerging therapeutic modalities, but the historical failure rate indicates that many candidates will continue to be unsuccessful.

Developer Accidentally Commits Copilot Binary to FreeBSD Ports Repository

89d ago · Source: theregister

A developer inadvertently uploaded a Copilot binary file to the FreeBSD ports repository, prompting the repository to be frozen.

The FreeBSD ports tree is automatically mirrored to a read‑only GitHub repository, and GitHub blocks files larger than 100 MiB, so the oversized commit exceeded the limit and introduced a file with unclear licensing.

The freeze was announced on July 21 and took effect on July 22, according to a message posted to the freebsd-announce mailing list. The commit broke the mirroring to github.com and added a blob whose licensing was described as questionable.

FreeBSD maintains an official Copilot port that allows the Linux binary to run inside the Linuxulator, but the port does not include the Copilot CLI binary because of its custom license, Kyle Evans said.

The incident underscores the difficulty of using Git, especially the 100 MiB file‑size restriction on GitHub.

Developers have created alternative version‑control systems such as Game of Trees, Gitless, and Jujutsu to simplify Git usage, though each project varies in activity.

The FreeBSD team will remove the offending commit and restore normal mirroring.

The 28.9 million‑parameter language model runs entirely on an ESP32‑S3 microcontroller that costs roughly $8, writing each word to a small attached display at about 9.5 tokens per second. Most of the model’s parameters are stored in flash memory; a per‑layer embedding approach from Google’s Gemma models allows a 25 million‑row embedding table to reside in 16 MB flash while only a few hundred bytes are read per token, enabling the model to operate within the chip’s 512 KB SRAM. The model was trained on the TinyStories dataset and generates short, simple stories; it does not answer open‑ended questions or execute code. On‑device compute reaches 9.7 tokens per second, with end‑to‑end generation at 9.5 tokens per second. The project’s firmware, wiring schematics, training scripts and measurement results are published in the esp32‑ai GitHub repository, and the approach extends Andrej Karpathy’s llama2.c framework.

The partnership is expected to shorten design and development lead times by handling multiple stages of production in‑house, from layout to packaging. Samsung’s integrated DRAM and storage offerings give it flexibility that TSMC would need to obtain from external suppliers, potentially reducing supply‑chain bottlenecks. The deal underscores Samsung’s ambition to broaden its foundry services and could influence the trajectory of AI chip design, though the final value of the agreement and its impact on market competition remain subject to future announcements.

Prentis AI Lab in Talks to Raise $100 Million at $1 Billion Valuation

89d ago · Source: techcrunch

Prentis, an AI research lab founded by Reid Hoffman, Mark Pincus and Ritankar Das, is negotiating to raise $100 million at a $1 billion valuation, according to two people familiar with the discussions.

The company, launched in April, develops AI agents that automate routine office workflows across documents and systems.

Prentis trains models to enable computer use automation, targeting tasks such as insurance claim processing and customs duty refunds. It has signed contracts worth up to $50 million with customers in healthcare, manufacturing and consumer goods, and projects an annualized run rate of $75 million by the third quarter, based on performance‑dependent fees.

The company claims its Hive‑32B model outperforms OpenAI’s GPT‑5.4 and Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.6 on WindowsAgentArena and ScreenSpot‑v2 benchmarks and says it operates at roughly one‑tenth the cost per task of larger frontier APIs; TechCrunch has not independently verified these results.

Other firms, including Anthropic, OpenAI and Thinking Machines Lab, are also developing computer‑use agents. Prentis has hired more than 25 employees, many formerly at OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Meta, Tencent and Alibaba.

CEO Ritankar Das, 31, previously founded Titan, a holding company that has backed companies such as Tala Health, Forta Health and Dascena. Hoffman, stepping down from Microsoft’s board to focus on his Manas AI venture, and Pincus, who runs Reinvent Capital and recently published a memoir, are participating in the effort. Prentis has not responded to requests for comment.

The funding round would value the startup at $1 billion and could position it as a notable player in the growing market for AI agents that automate everyday office tasks.

VA Signs $1.6B Contract with Salesforce for AI Agents

89d ago · Source: theregister

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) awarded Salesforce a $1.6 billion, three‑year contract to deploy AI agents across its operations. The contract builds on the VA’s broader technology modernization effort, which includes a $9.99 billion electronic health record agreement with Oracle that was paused in 2023 after safety concerns and later resumed. Salesforce will provide an Agentic Enterprise License Agreement (AELA) that gives VA staff access to agentic AI, integrated data and collaboration tools intended to lower administrative workload. Kendall Collins, CEO of Salesforce’s defense and government unit, said the platform would let employees find information faster and spend more time delivering care to veterans. The agreement includes a 24‑hour virtual contact center that uses AI agents to retrieve data during calls, triage cases and automate benefits verification. It also funds an agentic operating system based on Slack that is already in use at several VA hospitals. Gartner warned that broad, unmonitored use of AI services may lead to higher expenses, and expects future contracts to define usage limits. Salesforce said the deal remains flexible and that the contract will not be converted to a defined‑quantity arrangement. The Department of Defense also signed an Enterprise Software Agreement with Oracle worth up to $7 billion over ten years, a deal projected to save taxpayers at least $441 million over its lifetime. The ultimate cost and effectiveness of the VA’s AI deployment will be evaluated as the contract progresses.

Canopy Bridges Reduce Roadkill in Amazon, Enable 15,000 Safe Crossings

89d ago · Source: Hacker News

Project Reconecta installed eight rope bridges over a highway in a Brazilian municipality, and a 15‑month camera‑trap study recorded 15,000 safe crossings by arboreal wildlife with no roadkill reported. The bridges were placed to reconnect forest fragments separated by roads, a condition that often leads to wildlife mortality and reduced genetic diversity. Biologist Gabriel Falquetto observed roadkill along ES-164 highway in Espírito Santo, noting the death of a buffy‑headed marmoset, a critically endangered primate with fewer than 2,500 individuals remaining. In Alta Floresta, Mato Grosso, no roadkill was recorded after eight canopy bridges were installed in 2024; camera footage showed 15,000 crossings in the following 15 months. The bridges, each equipped with two camera traps, have been used by several primate species, including the black‑faced black spider monkey, the Purus red howler monkey, the northern night monkey, the tufted capuchin, Schneider’s marmoset, and the Alta Floresta titi monkey, which is classified as critically endangered. Abra, founder of Reconecta, explained that the bridges improve connectivity and reduce roadkill, and that eight additional bridges will be installed in the urban area of Alta Floresta, pending power‑line adjustments. The design, a multilayer structure, accommodates various locomotion styles and has been used by primates as well as opossums, sloths, and mouse opossums. Use of the bridges tends to increase over time; primates began using one bridge after seven months, indicating species‑specific adaptation periods. The federal transport department designated the bridge design as the recommended national standard for highways in 2026. A bill pending in the Senate would incorporate wildlife warning signs, speed‑reduction devices, and the construction of overpasses, aerial crossings, and underpasses; if passed, the canopy bridge model could be deployed nationwide. Abra’s work has earned awards including the Whitley Award in 2024 and the Wayfinder Award in 2026; she plans to expand to Suriname and to other biomes such as the Pantanal and Atlantic Forest. Collaboration among government agencies, private companies, and local communities is considered essential for the initiative’s success.

Anthropic Launches Opus 5 AI Model with Efficiency Upgrade

89d ago · Source: reuters

Anthropic announced on July 24 that it had launched Opus 5, an AI model it says matches Fable 5’s capabilities at half the price and is suited for daily office work and programming. Opus 5 follows the May release of Opus 4.8 and expands the Claude family of models. Fable 5, a more capable model, was temporarily taken offline in June after U.S. officials expressed concerns that its abilities could be used for foreign military intelligence. According to Anthropic, Opus 5 is less able to exploit cyber vulnerabilities than its top‑tier models and has less restrictive safeguards. The company also said the model is less prone to being misled into misuse compared with other current Claude models. Product leader Dianne Penn told Reuters that the release reflects a rapid pace of development and a commitment to making frontier intelligence broadly accessible. She said Opus 5 is appropriate for routine tasks while Fable 5 remains suitable for projects that require extended autonomous operation. Penn noted that open‑weight models such as Moonshot’s Kimi K3 raise questions about performance on complex real‑world tasks. The introduction of Opus 5 adds to competition among AI developers and occurs amid heightened scrutiny of model capabilities.

Louisville Maker 3D Prints Pistol-Shaped E-Reader Case as States Consider Printer-Blocking Laws

89d ago · Source: theverge

Luke The Maker of Louisville, Kentucky created a 3D-Printed case that resembles a pistol for the Xteink X4 e-reader. The case cannot fire and was shown in a social-media clip. He calls the accessory the Gundle. Lawmakers in New York and California are considering requirements that new 3D printers include software to block files that resemble firearms. The proposed software would scan each file before printing and halt the printer if it determines the file matches a gun or part. Blackford uploaded the design files to his website and printed the case using a Bambu Lab H2D printer in less than 24 hours. He said he did not intend to challenge the legislation but expressed doubt about the feasibility and risks of the scanning technology. He noted that the case could be mistaken for a real gun and that carrying it publicly might lead to misunderstandings, citing the 2014 shooting of Tamir Rice and a 2016 report that police killed 86 people holding realistic toy weapons. Blackford said he avoided posting the files on major repositories to limit distribution. Supporters of the scanning mandates argue that 3D-Printed guns, or ghost guns, present enforcement challenges because they can be made without serial numbers and are difficult to trace. The NYPD recovered 109 3D-Printed firearms from crime scenes in 2024, up from one in 2021. Everytown reported similar findings in 20 cities. Critics say the technology is not yet reliable and that existing detection methods can produce false positives that block legitimate prints or false negatives that miss actual firearms. Cliff Braun of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Solomon Diamond of Dartmouth College say the balance between false positives and false negatives is a technical challenge. Braun noted that a hash-based system would miss the e-reader case while an AI-driven visual analysis could misclassify harmless objects. Diamond suggested a geometric identification approach that matches exact shapes, which could avoid false positives but is still emerging. New York Governor Kathy Hochul's office said the law aims to improve public safety and reduce gun violence and relies on expert panels. The administration did not respond to questions about the specific case or its potential impact on makers. Blackford said that while 3D-Printed guns are still less common than conventional firearms, he doubts they pose an immediate threat and suggests that open-source software will likely circumvent any mandatory locks.

Phineas Fisher, a hacktivist, breached Hacking Team in 2016, exposing more than 400 gigabytes of internal data and contributing to the company's eventual sale for one euro, and remains unidentified. Since 2014, Phineas Fisher has carried out a series of high‑profile attacks on firms that develop and sell government spyware, including FinFisher and Hacking Team, and has targeted law enforcement and political entities in Europe and the Middle East. In August 2014, Phineas announced a hack of FinFisher, the makers of the FinFisher spyware, and leaked data via a Twitter account called @GammaGroupPR, including mobile spyware, product manuals, and a price list; the post‑mortem analysis was published as a manifesto and Phineas then disappeared. A year later, Phineas hacked Hacking Team, an Italian startup, obtaining more than 400 gigabytes of source code, internal emails, contracts, and customer lists; journalists used the material to reveal scandals in Ecuador, Mexico, and Panama, and the CEO was forced to sell the company for one euro. In subsequent actions, Phineas published a post‑mortem and a 39‑minute tutorial video after hacking the union of the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalan police force, and later targeted the ruling party of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, citing solidarity with the Rojava region. In 2016, Phineas hacked Cayman National Bank’s branch in the Isle of Man, a move that suggested a financial motive; the bank confirmed it was among several banks targeted, and Phineas stated they had been hacking multiple banks for years. In 2019, Phineas announced the “Hacktivist Bug Bounty Program” to reward individuals who expose illegal and unethical company activities, and the bank’s confirmation of the breach was followed by statements that Phineas had been active for several years. Phineas has described themselves as having anarchist ideals while also engaging in activities that could be classified as cybercrime, and has denied being a Russian spy; their origins are unclear, with references to Spanish‑speaking anarchists and living in a Spanish‑speaking country, and they have said that much of their public statements are intended as misinformation. No legal proceedings have been initiated against Phineas Fisher, and the individual continues to communicate privately, leaving the case unresolved.

Wind-Powered Ammonia Production Facility Begins Operations in Morris, Minnesota

89d ago · Source: Hacker News

Wind-powered ammonia production began on July 20, 2026 at the West Central Research and Outreach Center in Morris, Minnesota. The facility aims to produce one ton of low-carbon ammonia per day for local fertilizer use.

Ammonia is produced by combining hydrogen from water electrolysis with nitrogen from the air in a Haber Bosch process. The hydrogen is generated using electricity from wind turbines, and the plant can adjust its output to match wind availability.

The project is a collaboration among the University of Minnesota, RTI International, and Casale. It builds on a 2013 pilot plant and is intended to lower fertilizer prices, improve supply chain stability, and generate revenue for the state. Ammonia can be stored in nurse tanks or combined with carbon dioxide from ethanol production to create urea.

Unlike conventional plants that operate at a constant rate, this facility can vary production to accommodate fluctuating wind supply. Adjusting output reduces the need for large hydrogen storage, which lowers capital costs and makes the system more economical.

Michael Reese, Green Ammonia Research Lead at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, said the concept treats wind as the feedstock and allows flexible operation. Prodromos Daoutidis, Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, said that dynamic operation minimizes hydrogen storage requirements and supports state economic development.

The partners suggest that farmer cooperatives could develop similar plants with state support, loans, and credits. A December 2025 AEA Project Features episode described the facility in detail, and recordings are available online.

Memory Safety Analysis Shows Rust Has Lower Vulnerability Rate Than C and C++

89d ago · Source: Hacker News

Piotr Sarnacki wrote a blog post on July 28, 2026 that examines criticism of Rust’s memory safety claims. The article notes that the discussion is not focused on Rust developers. Traditional systems languages such as C, C++, and Zig rely on programmers to prevent memory errors, while Rust uses compile‑time checks and an unsafe keyword to allow low‑level operations.

Fil‑C adds memory safety to C and C++ code by using garbage collection and a tracking system called InvisiCaps. Programs compiled with Fil‑C panic on out‑of‑bounds or use‑after‑free accesses. The approach changes the binary interface, making it incompatible with non‑Fil‑C builds, and can slow execution in some cases.

The author of Fil‑C has expressed dislike for Rust, arguing that Rust permits unsafe operations that undermine its guarantees. Zig’s creator, Andrew Kelley, announced a compilation mode inspired by Fil‑C that claims to provide true memory safety, unlike Rust.

Some commentators assert that Rust supporters should adopt Fil‑C or abandon Rust, claiming it is safer. The author notes that Fil‑C’s trade‑offs—ABI incompatibility, performance overhead, and garbage collection—limit its applicability to certain projects.

Sarnacki cites Android’s roughly 5 million lines of Rust code, which contained one memory‑safety issue that was fixed before release. This yields a vulnerability density of about 0.2 per million lines, compared with an estimated 1,000 per million lines for C and C++ code.

He argues that Rust reduces memory‑safety risk by more than a thousandfold and that developers should choose the language that best fits project constraints, rather than adopt an absolutist stance. Using Rust alongside other languages remains acceptable.

Apple Seeks to Source Memory Chips from China's YMTC Amid Micron Opposition

89d ago · Source: wccftech

Apple is seeking permission from the White House to purchase memory chips from China's Yangtze Memory Technologies (YMTC) as part of an effort to lower consumer prices, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The dispute emerged after Apple announced price increases for its devices amid high demand for memory chips driven by artificial intelligence applications.

Discussions have involved Apple CEO Tim Cook, Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the Journal reported. Mehrotra contends that permitting YMTC to supply chips would damage U.S. industrial growth, while Apple maintains that the chips could help keep prices down. Earlier reports indicated Apple has tested YMTC's DRAM products and may use them for devices sold in China.

Micron, which has historically avoided direct engagement with Apple dating back to his time at SanDisk, says that reliance on Chinese suppliers could jeopardize U.S. production capacity and lead to overreliance on foreign sources. The company has previously argued that Chinese firms lack the global capacity to meaningfully affect the memory market, a claim Apple disputes.

The lobbying effort remains ongoing, and the White House has not announced a decision, leaving the outcome of the dispute unresolved.

Fallen Power Line Causes 3 Gigawatt Data Center Disconnection on PJM Grid

89d ago · Source: techcrunch

A power line failure outside Washington, DC, on July 22, 2026, caused more than 3 gigawatts of data center load to disconnect from the PJM grid, triggering a voltage spike across the region and a brief flicker of lights for residents.

Northern Virginia, which hosts the world’s highest concentration of data centers, is part of the PJM Interconnection, the largest U.S. grid operator serving 67 million customers. Data from Ting Labs and PJM showed that the line outage caused data centers to switch to backup power and remove their load within seconds, creating an oversupply of electricity that raised grid voltage from Virginia to Chicago. The fluctuation persisted for about 11 minutes before the system stabilized.

The incident mirrored a smaller event in 2024 when 60 data centers disconnected, removing 1.5 gigawatts and representing roughly 6 percent of PJM’s load at the time. The recent event accounted for about 3 percent of total demand, but the rapid, simultaneous disconnection highlighted the grid’s sensitivity to large, nearby loads. Experts note that data center capacity in the region is projected to reach 24 percent of PJM’s load by 2040, increasing the likelihood of similar disturbances.

ON.Energy, a startup, is developing a campus‑wide uninterruptible power supply that combines battery storage with advanced power conversion to smooth the interaction between data centers and the grid. The system enables data centers to ramp workloads and absorb fluctuations rather than disconnect abruptly and is slated for installation at four campuses totaling 3 gigawatts.

Grid operators, including ERCOT, are considering rules that would require large loads to “ride through” disruptions, a measure that could improve grid stability as AI‑driven computing demand continues to grow.

Linus Torvalds Says Linux Is Not Anti‑AI, Sparking Debate in Open‑Source Community

89d ago · Source: theregister

Linus Torvalds said Linux is not an anti‑AI operating system, a statement that has reignited discussion about artificial intelligence in open‑source software. The comment follows a policy update by the European volunteer code forge Codeberg, which now bans projects that rely mainly on generative AI tools and also excludes cryptocurrency‑related code. Torvalds emphasized that his concern is whether software works, not its ideological stance. At the same time, developers of various distributions and desktop environments have expressed divergent views on AI use. NetBSD has treated AI‑generated code as potentially tainted since 2024, while OpenBSD’s leader says such code cannot be copyrighted but allows contributions from projects like tmux. FreeBSD continues to examine the issue. Several major FOSS components — systemd, GNOME, Wayland, Flatpak — receive substantial funding from Red Hat, a subsidiary of IBM that has integrated AI tools into its development workflows. A recent Reddit post indicated that Red Hat IT will be moved to the parent company in October, raising questions about the quality and direction of its output. Distributions such as Vendefoul Wolf Linux, based on systemd‑free Devuan and using the X11 server, offer multiple desktop environments, including forks of KDE that aim to remain X11 compatible as Wayland support is introduced. In the browser space, Mozilla has added large language model features to Firefox, prompting forks such as Waterfox, Librewolf, and the Tor Browser to remove or disable those functions. The Waterfox fork disables telemetry, while Librewolf advertises a focus on privacy and security. The Mullvad Browser, co‑developed with the VPN provider Mullvad, is also a Firefox fork that excludes telemetry but has attracted scrutiny after its co‑owner donated to a political party. The debate extends beyond technical concerns to questions about ethics, data harvesting, environmental impact of model training, and job market effects. Payment options that include cryptocurrencies, often favored by libertarian and right‑leaning communities, have become a point of contention for projects that seek to avoid AI and crypto influence. Whether anti‑AI groups can cooperate despite political and ethical differences will determine their ability to resist the growing availability of AI‑assisted development tools in the open‑source ecosystem.

Europol Identifies 4,340 URLs Linked to the Com Network for Removal

89d ago · Source: theregister

Europol and its partner agencies flagged 4,340 URLs for removal in June and July as part of Project Compass, a law‑enforcement effort aimed at disrupting the online network known as The Com. The operation involved investigators from Belgium, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.

The Com is a loosely organized network in which young participants engage in a range of illicit activities, including hacking, swatting, digital extortion and real‑world violence such as shootings and stabbings. Europol’s European Counter Terrorism Centre has received hundreds of investigation requests over the past two years related to crimes tied to the network, which it describes as a global threat, especially to minors.

The URLs marked for removal included violent videos and images depicting self‑harm, suicide, child sexual abuse material, animal cruelty and attacks. They also contained blood‑wall paintings displaying group affiliations, cut‑sign markings, manuals for violent attacks, and instructions for grooming, extorting minors, doxxing and swatting. Europol noted that the extreme nature of the content raises a participant’s status within the community and is often livestreamed and later disseminated.

The Referral Action Days were part of the larger Project Compass, launched in 2025, which coordinates actions among law‑enforcement agencies in the United States, United Kingdom and EU member states. While the operation focused on removing harmful content, it underscores ongoing challenges in policing online extremist recruitment and violence‑related crime.

U.S. Justice Department Charges Atlanta Man Over Alleged Use of Duress Password to Wipe Phone at Border

89d ago · Source: techcrunch

The U.S. Justice Department has charged Samuel Tunick, an Atlanta resident, for allegedly providing a passcode that caused his phone to erase its contents during a border inspection at Hartsfield‑Jackson Atlanta International Airport on January 24, 2025.

Tunick’s attorneys say the phone was seized under the authority of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which asserted the right to search devices without a warrant before entry. The device ran GrapheneOS, a custom Android operating system that includes a feature allowing a secondary passcode to trigger a full data wipe.

Tunick’s legal team filed a motion to suppress the evidence, arguing that border agents detained him without access to counsel and without informing him of his rights. They contend the agents used the pretext of searching for child exploitation material, while the government said it was investigating his association with an environmental group opposing a police training campus.

Security experts have said they have not observed similar prosecutions. The Electronic Frontier Foundation noted that the case highlights concerns about border device searches. Prosecutors charged Tunick under a federal statute prohibiting intentional destruction of property to impede seizure; he has pleaded not guilty. The federal court in Atlanta is expected to rule on the suppression motion later this year.

A Justice Department spokesperson declined to comment. The outcome of the case may clarify the scope of border search authority and the admissibility of data‑destruction claims.

Young Founders Face Pressure to Deliver Rapid Growth in AI Startup Market

89d ago · Source: techcrunch

Arlan Rakhmetzhanov, 19, says he must build a company comparable to Google or face failure. He began coding at age 15 in Kazakhstan, attended summer programs in San Francisco, and secured an angel investment from a Y Combinator founder at 17, leading to the YC‑backed Nozomio, an API index for AI agents that has raised over $6 million.

Pranjali Awasthi, 19, left high school to start an AI venture, later attended Georgia Tech before dropping out to launch Slashy, a Y Combinator‑backed email management tool, and is now developing a new stealth startup.

Ashley Smith, a general partner at Vermilion, said a meaningful share of her portfolio consists of companies founded by individuals under 30, including several younger than 21. She noted that youthful founders often demonstrate strong GitHub activity, open‑source contributions, and familiarity with current AI tools, which she believes offsets limited experience.

Smith added that investors now expect founders to deliver growth within months rather than years, a shift linked to the proliferation of accelerators, incubators and pre‑seed funds that impose tighter performance timelines.

The competitive environment has increased pressure to produce high‑visibility launch content. Roy Lee, founder of Cluely, whose startup raised $20 million after initially offering a tool to help students cheat on exams, has become a visible example of young Silicon Valley talent.

Timothy Chen, an investor at Essence Ventures, said the current expectation is to demonstrate rapid growth and a compelling public image, contrasting with earlier periods when iteration could occur privately.

Aidan Guo, 20, co‑founder of Attention Engineering, an AI desktop assistant that has raised about $1.6 million, described self‑imposed anxiety and the challenge of managing multiple responsibilities while facing public scrutiny.

Rakhmetzhanov and Awasthi both emphasized that conviction, intellectual honesty and customer focus remain essential for startup success, regardless of founder age.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said he expects Sony’s decision to stop printing physical PlayStation discs after 2028 to have limited impact on the industry. Sony announced in early 2024 that it will end physical disc production for the PlayStation line beginning in 2028, shifting focus to digital distribution. During a quarterly investor call, Guillemot was asked about the announcement and said, “What we saw on the PC is that it helped to grow the market… There’s also pressure on hardware costs, and being able to offer only digital versions may make machines more accessible.” He added that there are both advantages and disadvantages, but that the change “will not disturb the industry too much.” Guillemot noted that Ubisoft regularly provides deep discounts on its titles, which reduces concerns about the move to digital-only releases, and that discounting physical games at retailers may also drive similar digital pricing strategies. Industry analysts have offered mixed perspectives; some suggest the shift could accelerate adoption of cloud gaming and lower entry barriers, while others warn that it may affect resale markets and consumer ownership habits. Consumer reaction has been vocal, with many fans expressing disappointment on social media. The transition to digital‑only distribution remains pending, and its ultimate effect on game pricing, ownership models, and platform strategy is yet to be determined.

Meta has paused a planned monthly subscription fee for its smart glasses Conversation Focus accessibility feature after receiving feedback. A company spokesperson confirmed the pause to The Verge and said the feature will remain free for early testers while the company explores alternatives. The Conversation Focus feature, which enhances audio clarity for users with hearing difficulties, was originally slated to be offered as part of a paid tier with a proposed $20 monthly charge, though the service runs locally on the device. Meta said the subscription test is currently paused and that it continues to assess the best approach, noting that not all premium features will be subscription‑based. Seattle Raccoon Jimothy Becomes Viral Internet Meme

89d ago · Source: bbc

A Seattle raccoon known as Jimothy has become a viral internet meme after a video posted by local resident Kiana Hall received more than eight million views by Friday morning.

The footage, shared on Instagram on May 31, 2025, showed the raccoon moving quickly across a sidewalk and up steps. The caption identified the animal as "Jimothy the raccoon with short spine syndrome," a description that sparked speculation about the animal's condition.

Commenters noted that the raccoon may have been mentioned by Hall's brother before the video gained traction. Digital culture researcher Dr. Idil Galip of the University of Washington said increased human‑raccoon encounters in urban areas provide more footage that can become memes quickly.

A local artist painted a mural of Jimothy in the Ballard neighborhood, where the animal was first observed. The White House social media account shared a meme of the raccoon wearing a red hat with the slogan "Trump was right about everything."

Google added an animation of Jimothy to its search results page when the name is entered, and crypto developers launched meme coins referencing the raccoon. An upcoming appearance in World of Warcraft was announced, and an official Minecraft account claimed the raccoon appeared in the game.

Officials in Washington have warned residents not to approach Jimothy to protect both the animal and public safety. Some observers said the viral attention offers a brief respite from the constant flow of online content, as described by writer Jamie Slack in her blog Totally the Bomb.

Analysts noted that brands are capitalizing on the trend through meme marketing, which can generate temporary visibility in search results and social media feeds.

Apple Expected to Release iPhone 18 Pro with Battery, Camera, and Design Upgrades

89d ago · Source: 9to5mac

Apple is expected to release the iPhone 18 Pro in the coming months, offering three primary upgrades compared with the iPhone 17 Pro. The iPhone 17 Pro introduced notable battery improvements, but rumors suggest the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will feature a larger battery capacity and efficiency gains from an LTPO+ display, a 2nm A20 Pro chip, and a new C2 cellular modem. Industry analysts have reported that the iPhone 18 Pro will include significant camera hardware changes, with a variable aperture for the main camera and a larger aperture for the telephoto lens, and a thicker main camera module. Design updates reportedly include new color options, a reduced Dynamic Island size, and a unified rear glass and aluminum construction, moving away from the two-tone rear finish of the previous generation. The timing of the release and the extent of the upgrades remain subject to confirmation, and consumers can await further details before deciding on an upgrade.
