Police arrested a Canadian woman who was working as an intern at NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Mons, Belgium, on suspicion of espionage. The arrest occurred on Friday after authorities searched her home and her workplace. Prosecutors said she is suspected of spying for a foreign state and of belonging to a criminal organization. She is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, when a judge will decide whether she remains in pretrial detention.
NATO officials said they are cooperating fully with the investigation. Col. Martin O’Donnell, a SHAPE spokesman, said there was no indication that operations or missions were affected and that the command continued to fulfill its responsibilities. The probe was initiated after SHAPE security staff alerted Belgium’s military intelligence. Forensic and scientific police units from Charleroi and Mons assisted the investigation.
The woman’s identity and the country she is alleged to have spied for have not been disclosed. Details about her assignment or duties at SHAPE have also not been released.
