NOAA announced it will move its Weather and Climate Operational Supercomputing System (WCOSS) to commercial cloud infrastructure, beginning with a partnership with Google Cloud. The transition will place the Global Forecast System and Global Ensemble Forecast System on the cloud, with full operations targeted for December 2027. Jacobs said the cloud environment will accelerate the shift of research into operations by eliminating on‑premise bottlenecks and provide access to newer hardware. Graham said the new platform will allow flexible, on‑demand scaling of computing power and improve resilience, reducing downtime. Phase 1 will establish cloud‑based supercomputing capabilities; Phase 2 will migrate individual forecast models for operational use. The migration follows earlier contracts to provide cloud‑based tools to NWS forecasters at 122 local offices and other NWS centers. NOAA’s Weather Modeling and Development unit in College Park, Maryland, will oversee the process.
