Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella warned that companies relying entirely on a single AI provider risk losing control of their data and strategic direction. He made the remarks on CNN’s “Fareed Zakaria GPS” on Sunday. Earlier in the month, Nadella had called for enterprises to retain metadata and usage data from each AI interaction so they can train their own models. He argued that separating the AI harness from the model and keeping context outside the model would let firms use multiple providers and maintain control even if one disappears. Nadella said companies should stop depending on proprietary coding tools such as Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s ChatGPT Codex. Although Microsoft invests in Anthropic and OpenAI, Nadella said the warning is not solely self‑interest and that its cloud business will benefit from offering alternative AI infrastructure. He noted that many enterprises are moving toward open‑weight models that they can fine‑tune and run on their own hardware. He warned that once a firm outsources its thinking, a provider could later launch competing services that replicate the firm’s work. Investor Jason Calacanis previously warned that OpenAI could study startup ideas, copy them and release them for free, describing it as a classic platform playbook. Nadella said the concerns apply only to businesses, not individual consumers, who accept data sharing as part of free services and the advertising business model. The industry is shifting toward multi‑model strategies and independent AI infrastructure, but it remains unclear how quickly firms will adopt these changes and whether providers will respond to the warned risks.
