The Trump administration filed an emergency petition with the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday seeking to allow a presidential executive order that would restrict mail‑in voting for the upcoming November midterm elections.
The order, issued in March, would require the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and the Social Security Administration to compile a federal list of eligible voters and instruct the U.S. Postal Service to deliver ballots only to individuals on that list.
A federal district court in Boston previously blocked the order for 23 states and the District of Columbia, and a U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit upheld that decision over the weekend. The administration argues the measure prevents non‑citizen voting, though non‑citizen voting is rare and illegal. State officials and Democratic attorneys contend the Constitution assigns election rules to states and Congress, not the president, and warn the changes could facilitate fraud.
The Supreme Court has not yet ruled on the request, and the outcome will determine whether the order can be implemented before the election.
