China launched a series of artificial intelligence satellites from the Wenchang Space Launch Center on August 13, marking a milestone after a recent launch failure. Wenchang on Hainan Island serves as China's main heavy‑lift launch site since 2016. The China National Space Administration said the satellites are intended to test machine learning algorithms and data processing in orbit. The agency also announced plans to launch a mission to the lunar south pole later this year, with the spacecraft to be prepared at Wenchang. The lunar mission is intended to study resources at the moon's south pole and evaluate technologies for future crewed landings, and a launch date has not been set.
