A sister of Imran Khan was taken into custody in Lahore on Sunday, according to officials from his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, as authorities prepare for demonstrations supporting the former prime minister.

Aleema Khanum, who has been a frequent critic of her brother's detention, was arrested by Lahore's deputy commissioner on allegations that she was organising supporters through social media and public gatherings. The arrest order, which permits a 30‑day detention, cites concerns that such mobilisation could provoke unrest.

Her son, Shahrez Khan, posted on X that the family has been unable to locate her and has called on the government to disclose her whereabouts and ensure her safe return. Police confirmed the detention to the BBC, and authorities said she will be transferred to Kot Lakhpat jail.

The timing of the arrest coincides with plans for nationwide protests on 27 September, when supporters intend to march toward Islamabad. Interior Minister statements, as reported by local media, describe the demonstrations as detrimental to the country and pledge a firm response.

Imran Khan, a former cricket star turned politician, is currently serving a 14‑year sentence for a land‑corruption conviction and faces more than 100 additional charges, which he characterises as politically motivated. The crackdown on dissent ahead of the protests reflects heightened tensions between the government and Khan's supporters.
