Johannes Doerfert, a central figure in the LLVM compiler community, died on September 17, 2026, at age 36 following a cancer diagnosis. His passing was confirmed by the LLVM Foundation and announced publicly on September 20, 2026.

Born November 5, 1989, Doerfert earned a Ph.D. in computer science from Saarland University in 2018. His doctoral work centered on applying polyhedral optimization techniques to low-level code generation. He began contributing to LLVM in 2014 while collaborating with Professor Sebastian Hack’s compiler design group, quickly becoming a core developer of the Polly loop optimization infrastructure.

Over the next decade, Doerfert specialized in compiler optimization, parallel computing, and GPU code generation. As LLVM’s maintainer for OpenMP target offloading starting in 2021, he led development of compiler and runtime support enabling efficient GPU execution across NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel platforms. His work included just-in-time compilation, link-time optimization, and minimizing GPU kernel launch overhead.

His technical contributions included designing the Attributor framework — a fixpoint iteration system for deducing function attributes across programs — and advancing polyhedral scheduling methods. He authored multiple studies on compiler optimization, automatic differentiation, and performance portability. Doerfert also played a key role in organizing EuroLLVM 2017, the LLVM-HPC workshop series, and LLVM presentations at ISC since 2019, fostering collaboration between compiler and high-performance computing communities.

He mentored numerous students through Google Summer of Code and guided research projects on topics including interprocedural analysis, loop transformation heuristics, and machine learning applications in optimization pass ordering. Collaborative works with researchers such as Brian Homerding, Jon Chesterfield, and Mircea Trofin resulted in publications on attribute inference, latency hiding for memory transfers, and GPU libc benchmarking.

Doerfert was a regular participant in LLVM Developers’ Meetings, delivering 26 speaking sessions between 2015 and 2024. He frequently hosted office hours and supported newcomers through community outreach. Colleagues described him as approachable and generous with knowledge.

A memorial service is scheduled for October 3, 2026, from 1:00 to 5:00 PM at San Jose Funeral Service in California, with a separate event planned in Germany. He is survived by his wife, Xuejin Zhang, his father, Jürgen Doerfert, and extended family and friends.

In place of flowers, the family has requested donations to the LLVM Foundation, which will match contributions up to $50,000 in his honor. The foundation encourages donors to specify “in memory of Johannes Doerfert” when contributing via donor-advised funds.
