Apple's vice president of hardware engineering Kate Bergeron confirmed during an interview with content creator Angelica Siciliani Fendi that the iPhone Duo's outer cover layer can be removed and replaced. The nano-texture layer above the inner foldable display is designed to conceal the central crease but degrades over time, Bergeron said. Apple has engineered the layer to maintain condition for an extended period, though replacement remains an option when wear becomes noticeable. In the United States, AppleCare+ coverage permits replacement of the cover layer for $19, while pricing for out-of-warranty replacements has not been disclosed. The company has not indicated whether users will be able to remove the layer independently, and the procedure is expected to be limited to Apple Stores and authorized service providers. Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo commence on Friday, October 16, at 5 a.m. Pacific Time, with retail availability beginning October 23. The device was previously introduced at Apple's September 9 event, where it was described as the thinnest iPhone ever when fully open, featuring two connected displays with a seamless transition between open and closed states. Earlier estimates from TrendForce suggested the iPhone 18 Pro would launch with a starting price of $1,249, reflecting a $150 increase over the prior generation.
