OpenAI and Synopsys have entered a multi-year agreement to jointly develop GPT-Synopsys, a specialized artificial intelligence model designed to transform semiconductor design workflows. The collaboration combines OpenAI's frontier AI capabilities with Synopsys' electronic design automation tools and engineering expertise.
Under the partnership, Synopsys will license its trusted EDA tools to support the development of GPT-Synopsys, which is optimized to operate these tools autonomously. The model is intended to function as an expert system, capable of interpreting design objectives, running verification processes, and iteratively refining chip layouts to improve power efficiency, performance, and area utilization.
GPT-Synopsys will be hosted on OpenAI's infrastructure and integrated with Synopsys' AI platform, Synopsys.ai, including its agentic workflow system, Autopilot. Early trials are reportedly underway with major semiconductor firms. The service will offer bundled access to computing resources, the model, and software licenses, with an emphasis on data privacy and security. Customer design data will not be used for model training and will be protected through encryption and access controls.
Sassine Ghazi, president and CEO of Synopsys, stated that the partnership aims to accelerate chip design while maintaining manufacturing reliability. Greg Brockman, president and co-founder of OpenAI, added that the collaboration aligns with OpenAI's broader goal of advancing AI systems that support technological progress across industries.
The initiative reflects growing interest in applying large language models to engineering tasks, particularly in domains requiring precision and iterative optimization. While the partnership does not guarantee specific outcomes, it represents a significant effort to integrate artificial intelligence more deeply into semiconductor development pipelines.
