Composer Mick Gordon contributed the climactic boss track for Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2, the sequel to the retro-styled first-person shooter Boltgun. Gordon, known for his work on Doom and Doom Eternal, said he was approached by developer Auroch Digital after the first game’s release. He described the sequel’s final battle as “big and bombastic and silly,” and accepted the invitation to create music that matched its scale. Gordon emphasized that each project requires a unique musical voice, rejecting the idea of reusing pre-existing riffs. He received gameplay footage and concept art from the studio’s quality assurance team to study, using the material to determine tempo and structure. He matched musical pacing to gameplay rhythm, avoiding tempos that might cause players to lower or mute the music. Collaboration involved iterative feedback, with Gordon presenting ideas for the team to approve or reject. He noted that only a small fraction of players — estimated at around 6% on Steam — would experience the boss battle’s soundtrack, which he viewed as a deliberate design choice to reward dedicated players. Gordon described his approach as aiming for “forward momentum,” where music and gameplay interact dynamically, allowing the player to influence the experience. Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 launched on PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S, with a Switch 2 version planned for a later release. IGN awarded the game an 8 out of 10, calling it “an explosive sequel that packs a bloody punch.”
