A sailor assigned to the Ohio-class guided-missile submarine USS Michigan died following a single-vehicle collision at Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton on Sunday evening. The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. when the vehicle the sailor was operating left the roadway, according to Lt. Zachary Anderson, spokesperson for Submarine Group 9. The individual was pronounced unresponsive at the scene and later died. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is conducting a standard investigation into the death, which remains active and ongoing. NCIS confirmed it will not release further details while the inquiry proceeds. The sailor’s name has been withheld pending notification of next of kin. A Kitsap County Coroner’s Office spokesperson stated an autopsy will be performed, but the cause and manner of death have not yet been determined. The death follows another recent incident at the base involving a Marine who died in a separate rollover crash on October 8. In that case, Private First Class Jack Tomanio was among five Marines involved in a vehicle rollover at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor. Three received treatment at St. Michael Medical Center in Silverdale and were released; a fourth was transferred to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma for continued care. Authorities have not indicated whether Tomanio was driving or if the crash occurred during work hours. Both incidents are under separate investigations by Naval and local authorities.
