Circle is preparing to enter roughly 50 emerging and developing economies as demand for digital-dollar payments accelerates across Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. The company, which issues the second-largest stablecoin USDC, announced plans to broaden its footprint beyond the United States where it already operates under a federal trust charter.
CEO Jeremy Allaire told Reuters that businesses and consumers in those regions are increasingly turning to stablecoins for everyday transactions and cross‑border transfers. "We're at an inflection point where blockchain technology is moving from early adopter use to mainstream scaling," he said.
USDC currently circulates at about $72.6 billion, representing roughly 25 percent of the stablecoin market, while Tether’s USDT holds close to 60 percent of the market. Circle’s expansion strategy includes a $400 million acquisition of Singapore‑based payments firm Tazapay, which provides access to banking and payment networks in more than 100 countries. The deal is intended to help Circle gain traction in markets where USDT has traditionally dominated.
In addition to the acquisition, Circle launched its own blockchain called Arc, designed specifically for payment and financial transaction use cases. The company also secured U.S. federal trust‑bank approval in July, a regulatory milestone that Allaire says is encouraging broader stablecoin adoption.
Allaire noted that clearer regulatory frameworks, such as the U.S. GENIUS Act governing stablecoins, are creating a more predictable environment for growth. He also highlighted the emerging role of artificial‑intelligence agents that use USDC for micro‑payments and online services.
The expansion reflects a broader shift of stablecoins from speculative crypto assets to tools for everyday finance, positioning Circle to compete with traditional banks and payment providers for a share of the global cross‑border money market.
