Meta introduced an open-weight AI model called Muse Spark Open on Thursday, stating it matches or exceeds performance levels seen in comparable systems from leading Chinese developers. Alexandr Wang, Meta's head of AI, announced the release on X, describing it as the most capable open-weight model developed in the United States to date. Unlike closed models such as Anthropic's Claude or OpenAI's ChatGPT, Muse Spark Open allows developers to download its parameters and modify them for custom applications. Chinese firms including Alibaba's Qwen, Moonshot AI's Kimi K3, and Z.ai's GLM have dominated the open-weight market in recent years, but Meta asserts its new model now competes at a similar level. The company highlighted the model's strengths in coding, agentic workflows, long-horizon tasks, complex software engineering, and multi-step reasoning, while noting that built-in safeguards have been incorporated. Muse Spark Open is optimized to run on Apple's M5 Ultra chips, enabling users to assemble a high-performance computing setup using two Mac Studios. The launch follows Meta's recent unveiling of a new closed-model system that it claims rivals the most advanced versions of ChatGPT and Claude. This move marks a shift from Meta's earlier emphasis on open models toward a strategy aimed at competing directly with OpenAI and Anthropic in the broader AI race.
