Florida Politician Jack Latvala Dies at 74

105d ago · Source: floridapolitics

Jack Latvala, a Florida state senator who chaired the Appropriations Committee, died on Wednesday at age 74. He was regarded as influential in recent Florida history.

Latvala entered politics through consulting and direct‑mail operations, later building a reputation for advocating state employee pay raises, opposing prison privatization, and securing funding for beach renourishment and tourism marketing. He sponsored legislation that allowed Dreamers to pay in‑state tuition, supported the Florida Forever land‑acquisition program, and helped secure money for the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, water taxis, and a health center in Clearwater’s North Greenwood neighborhood. He also played a role in facilitating Toni Jennings’ election as the first Republican woman Senate President.

In 2017, six women alleged that Latvala engaged in groping and sexual harassment. A special master’s report found probable cause that he groped a Senate aide and possibly violated public corruption laws by trading legislative support for sexual favors. Facing the investigation, Latvala resigned from the Senate and cancelled his campaign for governor.

The author, who worked on campaigns for Crist and consulted for Latvala’s firm, described a strained professional relationship, noting that Latvala’s firm was then representing Jim Large in the St. Petersburg mayoral race. Former colleagues largely remained silent after his resignation.

Latvala’s legacy includes both policy achievements and the controversy that led to his exit from public office. His death has prompted reflections on his impact on Florida politics.

Trump said to Have Influenced Kennedy Center Renovations for FIFA Peace Prize Ceremony, Whistleblowers Claim

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island sent a letter to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday alleging that whistleblowers said renovation work at the center was rushed and that federal contracting rules were ignored. The senator said the center failed to follow its obligations to Congress and its own procurement standards. The allegations include a second botched redo of the reflecting pool and the preparation of the facility for a December event in which Donald Trump received the FIFA peace prize during the World Cup draw he hosted.

Lawsuit Accuses ICE and Private Prison Contractors of Abusing Disabled Detainee

105d ago · Source: motherjones

Ulises Peña López and his attorneys sued the United States government and private prison operators GeoGroup and CoreCivic in federal court, alleging violations of the Rehabilitation Act after his detention by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in February 2025 in Sunnyvale, California. The complaint states that ICE officers took López to an alleyway and struck him until he lost consciousness, requiring CPR, and that he endured inadequate medical care and verbal abuse while housed at facilities operated by GeoGroup and CoreCivic. His wife and young daughter witnessed part of the alleged beating. The lawsuit says that López, a carpenter who suffered a mini‑stroke in August 2024, experienced worsening headaches, right‑side weakness, numbness, eye pain, hearing loss, insomnia, nightmares, blurry vision, back pain and difficulty walking during his eight months in detention. He was unable to work and did not receive timely medication. Staff allegedly mocked his disability and made statements such as “motherfucker, you don’t get to be asleep” and “you’re never gonna walk again.” At the transfer to California City Detention Center in August 2025, the complaint alleges staff denied timely medication and subjected him to harsh conditions. CoreCivic’s spokesperson said the company’s top priority is the safety, health and well‑being of detainees but declined to comment on the litigation. ICE declined to respond to a request for comment. Elena Hodges, co‑director of Pangea Legal Services, said the case seeks accountability for physical and emotional harms and aims to signal that ICE and private prison contractors are not above the law. After publication, an ICE spokesperson said claims of substandard medical care are false and that staff always use the minimum amount of force to safely de‑escalate situations.

Byron Donalds Calls for Pause on Flock License Plate Reader Deployment in Florida

105d ago · Source: floridapolitics

Byron Donalds, a Republican candidate for Florida governor and incumbent congressman, said he wants a pause on the state's use of Flock license plate reader cameras because he says they raise 4th Amendment concerns about mass surveillance.

Flock cameras, which read vehicle license plates and store data, are in use by at least 100 Florida law enforcement agencies and total 7,500 units in the state, according to local news. The system is deployed in many cities across Florida.

Donalds proposed criminal penalties of up to five years in prison and a $500,000 fine for misuse of the data, and said he would seek to re‑evaluate the program if elected.

Other Republican officials have voiced similar concerns, while Flock said its software includes role‑based access controls, audit logs, retention limits and geofencing, and that data sharing with federal agencies is disabled by default. The company said it does not engage in predictive policing and has no partnership with Palantir Technologies.

The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of similar location‑tracking technology in Chatrie v. United States this year, a ruling that may provide a legal precedent for Flock's operations.

Red light cameras have also faced scrutiny in Florida, with 37 jurisdictions using the devices at 302 intersections and issuing more than 923,000 violation notices in fiscal year 2024‑25.

ICE Emphasizes Counterfeiting and Human Trafficking at World Cup

105d ago · Source: politico

Immigration and Customs Enforcement has avoided direct involvement in crowd control during the final week of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, focusing instead on counterfeiting and human trafficking investigations.

The agency’s restraint follows concerns raised by Democrats and Republicans about potential confrontations between enforcement personnel and fans or players, which could have created diplomatic incidents.

DHS Secretary Mark Mullin said there was no specific guidance to limit ICE’s activities and that fears were unfounded, adding that the department has worked with federal, state and local partners to ensure stadium security.

Representative Nellie Pou noted she had not seen any significant reports of ICE misconduct, while Representative Michael McCaul said the agency’s role is to combat human trafficking rather than deport individuals, crediting the department’s restraint as positive.

Other immigration‑related incidents, such as CBP’s denial of entry to a Somali‑born referee and restrictions placed on Iran’s national team, have occurred outside major public view and have not been linked to ICE actions.

Representative Sydney Kamlager‑Dove warned that some of these actions create the appearance of a double standard, but said she is grateful that ICE has not been used to terrorize fans.

The department said it will continue to work with partners to keep the tournament safe and secure.

House Leader Helped Cape Verde Goalkeeper's Mother Secure U.S. Visa for Miami Match

105d ago · Source: politico

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries met FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the June 21 soccer match in Miami between Uruguay and Cape Verde, and intervened with the State Department to help the mother of Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha obtain a U.S. visa.

Vozinha, the Cape Verde national team’s starting goalkeeper, was playing in the tournament when his mother was initially denied a visa to attend the game.

The State Department said it processed the request after Jeffries contacted officials and approved the visa, allowing her to travel to Miami.

Jeffries said he wanted to ensure the family could support the player during the match. Infantino noted the swift response from U.S. officials after the game.

The match concluded with Cape Verde defeating Uruguay 2‑1, and Vozinha played in the starting lineup.

Crews Drain Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Again as Trump Renovation Project Continues

105d ago · Source: floridapolitics

Crews are draining the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool for a second time as part of a renovation project initiated by the Trump administration. The pool had been slated for completion by July 4 to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the United States, but algae growth and peeling coating have delayed the work. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, who heads the National Park Service, said the draining was planned and noted that debris from an Independence Day fireworks display may remain in the water. The administration has faced criticism, with Trump attributing the coating issues to vandalism while critics say shoddy repair work is responsible. Contractor Green Water Solutions received a $1.7 million contract to install a water‑purification system, and Atlantic Industrial Coatings was awarded $14.7 million to repaint and waterproof the pool’s concrete floor. Democratic senators and House members have launched investigations into the use of taxpayer funding for the project. The renovation is one of several capital projects the administration is pursuing in Washington, including plans to demolish the White House East Wing for a $400 million ballroom and to build a large arch linking the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery, with no set completion date.

Poll Shows Majority Pride in Country Across US, UK, Spain, Canada, France and Germany

105d ago · Source: politico

An international edition of The POLITICO Poll conducted by the independent London-based firm Public First found that majorities of adults in the United States, United Kingdom, Spain, Canada, France and Germany say they are proud of their country. The survey highlights how historical and political contexts shape different expressions of patriotism. In the United States, 51 percent of adults own a national flag, and more than 70 percent of voters who supported Donald Trump in the 2024 election report owning a flag, compared with 44 percent of those who backed Kamala Harris. Fifty‑two percent of Trump supporters say displaying a flag outside a home is an act of patriotism, versus 33 percent of Harris supporters. Forty‑nine percent of American respondents say the United States has the most patriotic citizens, the highest share among the six nations surveyed. In Canada, pride is linked to political leadership; Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party won office in April 2025 on a platform of countering U.S. influence and expanding energy development, and a Leger poll indicated he is more popular than any other politician in Quebec. In Germany, only 24 percent of adults want the country to be proud of its history, while 53 percent express neither pride nor shame and 14 percent say Germany should be ashamed. Supporters of the far‑right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party are more likely to want national pride, with 41 percent of prospective AfD voters favoring pride in history, double the overall average. In Spain, 76 percent of adults say they are proud to be Spanish, and 52 percent consider Spain the best place to live, the highest proportion among the surveyed nations. In France, 57 percent support requiring children to sing the national anthem in school, a view shared by 74 percent of National Rally supporters and 67 percent of Ensemble supporters. In the United Kingdom, 46 percent of adults say one cannot be proud of being British without being judged, similar to other European countries, and 40 percent of Americans, 45 percent of Britons, 52 percent of French, 43 percent of Germans and 50 percent of Spaniards cite their political leaders as a source of shame. The findings suggest that while nationalist movements influence patriotic sentiment, public attitudes toward national identity remain varied across the surveyed democracies.

FIFA said it will retain its Miami office after the men's World Cup concludes next week, using the location as a hub for upcoming competitions. The office opened in 2023 and now employs more than 700 full‑time staff, serving as the organization’s operational center for senior officials during the tournament. FIFA plans to deploy the Miami team to manage the women's World Cup in Brazil next year, assist with soccer events for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, and support the 2030 men's World Cup, which will be hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco with opening matches in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay. A women's World Cup is also scheduled for the United States in 2031. The organization said the staff and expertise developed in Miami will provide a lasting resource as soccer's importance grows in North America.

EPA Has Not Delivered MAHA Agenda, Activists Say

105d ago · Source: pbs

In Washington, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin pledged in December to release a formal "Make America Healthy Again" (MAHA) agenda outlining health‑related environmental priorities, but eight months later no comprehensive document has been issued. The agency has pursued a deregulatory agenda, including proposals to overturn climate health findings, roll back dozens of regulations and freeze clean‑energy funding. Activists say the missing agenda reflects disappointment with the administration's handling of pesticides, chemicals and chronic‑disease concerns and plan to make the issue a factor in the upcoming congressional elections. The EPA said it continues work on PFAS cleanup, provides grants for community water projects and collaborates with Health and Human Services and the USDA on food safety, while noting that its daily actions constitute the MAHA priorities. A White House MAHA report released early in the administration identified long‑term exposure to environmental chemicals as a leading cause of chronic disease in children. Activists have engaged with agency officials, sometimes achieving cooperation on regenerative agriculture, but also criticizing proposals to expand herbicide use and the EPA's decision not to include microplastics and pharmaceuticals in a drinking‑water testing program. The agency has defended its stance, saying technology for microplastic testing is still under development and that it operates without a single unveiling document.

US Allies Express Concern After Trump's Shifting Stance at NATO Summit

At the NATO summit in Ankara on July 12, 2026, President Donald Trump changed his public stance on alliance matters, prompting concern among member states.

At the NATO summit in Ankara on July 12, 2026, President Donald Trump changed his public stance on alliance matters, prompting concern among member states. The annual gathering brings together defense leaders to reaffirm collective security commitments. Trump had previously described the alliance as obsolete, but at the summit he said the United States remained committed to collective defense. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan attended the meeting. European officials said the shift created uncertainty for ongoing defense planning. Analysts noted that the reversal could be driven by domestic considerations or a strategic recalibration, while some observers suggested it reflected a desire to improve relations with Turkey. NATO officials said they would monitor the situation as the alliance prepares for its next ministerial meeting.

Senator Whitehouse Cites Whistleblower Allegations of Construction Issues at Kennedy Center

105d ago · Source: pbs

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island announced on Saturday that whistleblower documents allege rushed and improper construction work at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The Kennedy Center, named after former President John F. Kennedy, was placed under the control of President Donald Trump at the start of his second term, when he replaced its leadership with a board he chairs and added his name to the building. Whitehouse said he received a disclosure from the Government Accountability Project, a nonprofit that protects whistleblowers, alleging that the center accelerated renovations to meet the president’s timeline for a December event and a FIFA Peace Prize award. According to the documents, the center bypassed required congressional approval, used no‑bid contracts, and spent $8 million on a bathroom replacement contract with a firm that has no experience in concert‑hall construction. The whistleblower report also claims that steel columns rusted through fresh paint, a reflecting pool may need to be rebuilt, and a bathroom floor was removed because of a tile color disagreement. Whitehouse sent a letter to the center’s executive director, Matt Floca, requesting a response by July 23 and attached an 83‑page appendix of internal documents, emails and photographs. The Kennedy Center declined to comment when asked for a statement. The allegations add to ongoing legal and political disputes over the center’s name and management, which remain unresolved.

DoJ Subpoenas New York Times Reporters Over Air Force One Reporting

105d ago · Source: pbs

Washington (AP) — The Department of Justice issued subpoenas to four New York Times journalists, requiring them to appear before a federal grand jury in Manhattan next week. The subpoenas were delivered to the reporters at their homes by federal agents. The reporters, identified as Julian E. Barnes, Eric Lipton, Tyler Pager and Eric Schmitt, were asked to testify about articles concerning security concerns related to a new Air Force One aircraft that was gifted by Qatar and cost $400 million. The aircraft entered service last week, but President Donald Trump used an older model to depart a NATO summit in Turkey and later referenced threats from Iran. The subpoenas follow a meeting of FBI Director Kash Patel and other Justice Department officials at the White House on Friday, according to a person familiar with the discussion who spoke on condition of anonymity. The Department of Justice said that reporters are not the targets and that the investigation concerns unauthorized disclosures of classified information. It added that it values the press but must ensure officials handle sensitive information responsibly. Earlier in the year the department issued subpoenas to reporters at The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal, which were later withdrawn. In January FBI agents searched the home of Washington Post reporter Hannah Natanson as part of a leak investigation into a Pentagon contractor accused of taking home classified material. Adam Steinbaugh, senior attorney for the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, said the subpoenas and the prospect of grand jury testimony send a chilling message to journalists and whistleblowers. He noted that such tactics are becoming more common. During his first term Trump described the press as an enemy of the American people; since returning to office he has pursued an aggressive campaign against media outlets, including filing lawsuits and threatening to revoke broadcast licenses. The Justice Department has revised policies on handling leaks and, in April 2025, Attorney General Pam Bondi rescinded a Biden-era rule that protected journalists from secret phone record seizures, granting prosecutors broader authority to use subpoenas and warrants in leak investigations. A memo from Bondi stated that members of the press are presumptively entitled to advance notice and that subpoenas should be narrowly drawn, with warrants limited in scope. The White House did not respond to requests for comment on the subpoenas.

Norway Pushes to Suspend Israel from FIFA Amid World Cup Qualifiers

105d ago · Source: politico

Norway has called for Israel's suspension from FIFA, according to the Palestinian Football Association, which submitted a request in 2024 citing alleged atrocities in Gaza, discrimination against Arab athletes, and the participation of clubs operating in West Bank settlements. The call follows Norway's statement that Israel's continued participation creates a double standard after Russia was excluded from the sport following its invasion of Ukraine. Norway, which last appeared at the World Cup in 1998, has a limited tournament history and has used its institutional standing to advance the issue rather than player activism. In October 2023 Norway and Israel met in Oslo for a qualifying match; the Norwegian Football Federation announced that ticket revenue would be donated to Gaza relief, and Palestinian symbols were displayed in the stadium while the Israeli anthem was booed by fans. Former player Lise Klaveness, a lawyer on UEFA's executive committee, has advocated for human rights and transparency in FIFA, raising concerns about LGBTQ+ safety and conditions in Qatar. Captain Martin Ødegaard said in early 2025 that the situation in Gaza is a background that cannot be ignored when playing Israel. Striker Erling Haaland referenced the conflict on social media in 2023 and participated in a 2025 video call with a freed Israeli hostage, though he has not taken a definitive public position. The Palestinian Football Association's request is supported by several Arab and Asian football bodies, while European federations such as Turkey have taken a position based on religious grounds, and Ireland has considered a resolution to expel Israel without implementing a boycott. FIFA has not indicated a timeline for review, and the outcome remains unresolved as qualifiers continue.

Federal Judge Dismisses Remaining Proud Boys Convictions After Trump Clemency

105d ago · Source: pbs

A federal judge dismissed the remaining convictions of four former Proud Boys members in the seditious conspiracy case stemming from the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, following President Trump’s 2025 clemency that commuted their sentences.

Judge Timothy Kelly said the dismissal was inevitable after Trump’s broad pardon of individuals convicted of Jan. 6‑related offenses.

The ruling applies to Ethan Nordean, Joseph Biggs, Zachary Rehl and Dominic Pezzola, who were found guilty after a jury trial in Washington.

Trump did not include them in his mass pardon, so the court concluded the convictions could not stand.

The judge emphasized that the order does not endorse the Department of Justice’s decision to drop the case and described the Capitol riot as a “perilous event” threatening peaceful transfer of power.

The decision follows similar actions by the Justice Department to seek dismissal of seditious conspiracy convictions for the Oath Keepers, a separate group whose related request remains pending before another judge.

The Proud Boys and Oath Keepers were convicted of plotting to prevent the certification of the 2020 election results and keep President Trump in office after his loss to Joe Biden.

Enrique Tarrio, the former Proud Boys chairman, received a 22‑year sentence before being pardoned.

The dismissal leaves the legal aftermath of the Jan. 6 attacks partially unresolved, as the Oath Keepers’ convictions await a separate ruling.

Argentina President Javier Milei Awaits Switzerland Match Amid Domestic Challenges

105d ago · Source: politico

Argentina's president Javier Milei said he felt enthusiastic after Argentina defeated Egypt 2-0 with a late goal, securing the nation's place as the only Western Hemisphere team in the World Cup quarterfinals. The match occurred on July 11.

Milei, who has overseen cuts to public spending and reduced inflation, faces criticism for the social impact of his reforms, including rising unemployment. A September 2024 survey by Opina Argentina found that 58 percent of respondents viewed his presidency negatively, placing him behind leading opposition figures.

His administration has been marred by several investigations, including allegations linking him to a failed digital currency project and the resignation of his cabinet chief amid accusations of misusing public funds. Inflation remains elevated, contributing to his low approval ratings ahead of the 2025 legislative election.

Milei's foreign policy has aligned closely with the United States. After the United States withdrew from the World Health Organization, Argentina followed. Milei has threatened to exit the Paris Agreement and has distanced Argentina from the BRICS bloc and Mercosur, seeking closer ties with Washington. In October 2023, former President Donald Trump praised Milei as "my favorite president" and announced a $20 billion economic assistance package. A Pentagon communication cited by Reuters indicated that the United States also explored supporting Argentina's claim to the Falkland Islands.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio congratulated Argentina on its 210th Independence Day, describing Milei as "an indispensable partner" in combating narcoterrorism and authoritarian regimes. Despite these ties, Milei has not attended any World Cup matches, avoiding meetings with the Argentine Football Association, which is under FBI investigation for alleged money laundering. He also skipped a July 4 celebration hosted by the U.S. embassy in Buenos Aires, leading to speculation about a potential strain in bilateral relations. Rubio's statement, however, reassured that relations remain friendly.

Messi, the 39-year-old forward playing for Inter Miami, has remained apolitical. A pre‑World Cup poll placed his approval at over 90 percent, though his previous World Cup victory did not translate into political gains for the governing coalition. Former President Alberto Fernández faced a historic electoral defeat after the 2022 triumph and later faced legal issues, while his successor's vice president serves house arrest following a corruption conviction.

Gedan, a former State and Treasury official who heads the Stimson Center's Latin America program, noted that "Messi is a national hero, but Argentine politicians do not get to share the glory."

The upcoming 2025 election will test Milei's political resilience, and his continued alignment with the United States may influence both domestic support and international partnerships.

Starmer Considers Bank Holiday if England Wins World Cup Final

105d ago · Source: politico

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he would consider adding a bank holiday if England wins the World Cup final, but the proposal faces economic and political resistance. Countries have previously declared holidays after major football victories, such as Uruguay in 1930 and Panama in 2017, and Paraguay used a decree in June 2026 after its team beat Germany. Paraguayan President Santiago Peña signed a decree on June 29 to grant a day off following a penalty shootout victory that sent the team into the round of 16, citing the need to allow citizens to celebrate together. The decree was enabled by a 2025 law that permits the president to issue up to three temporary public holidays per year for special occasions, a provision originally drafted with the World Cup in mind. Business groups representing micro, small and medium-sized enterprises in Paraguay complained that the announcement came with little notice and disrupted work schedules, and Peña later acknowledged the decision was made spontaneously. A constitutional-law professor at the Universidad Católica Nuestra Señora de la Asunción noted that last-minute holidays often leave essential services and employers with limited time to adjust appointments or contracts. Starmer was asked about the possibility during a press briefing and replied that he did not want to jinx the team but would respond if England reached the final. A Good Morning Britain poll on X showed 60.4 percent of respondents supported a World Cup bank holiday, while a supermarket worker expressed concern that essential workers would remain on duty while others enjoyed a long weekend. An impact assessment published in 2022 estimated that an additional bank holiday would reduce United Kingdom gross domestic product by about £2.4 billion, a figure frequently cited by ministers opposing extra holidays. Downing Street may have to balance the potential economic cost against public demand if England wins its first World Cup in 60 years.

Norway and England Face World Cup Quarterfinal at Miami Stadium in Miami Gardens

Miami Gardens, a city of roughly 114,000 residents located 15 miles northeast of downtown Miami, has hosted five World Cup matches since the tournament began, with a third‑place match scheduled for July 20. The Oxford Economics Company’s Tourism Economics Event Impact Calculator estimated that the World Cup would generate about $650 million in economic activity across South Florida. Mayor Rodney Harris said the event offers Miami Gardens an opportunity to promote the city and attract visitors after the tournament concludes. The tournament will conclude with the final on July 19, after which Miami Gardens hopes to leverage the exposure to boost tourism and business development.

Former St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker Endorses Charlie Crist for Mayor

105d ago · Source: floridapolitics

Former St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker announced his endorsement of Charlie Crist for mayor, stating that the office should be nonpartisan and that bipartisanship should return to city government.

Baker, a Republican, cited his experience working with Democratic U.S. Senator Bill Nelson on post‑BP oil spill marine science funding, with then‑Vice President Joe Biden on a control tower project at Albert Whitted Airport, and with former Governor Jeb Bush on airport infrastructure that included The Hangar restaurant.

In his remarks, Baker described Crist as an honest person and a good human being, and noted his own record of collaboration across party lines. He referenced his role in bringing the IndyCar Grand Prix to St. Petersburg and said the effort required daily attendance and commitment to the city.

He also pointed to a digital ad from St. Pete Shines that highlighted Council Member Ken Welch’s attendance record, noting that consistent work attendance is essential for effective mayoral service.

Crist leads Welch in recent polling; a St. Pete Polls survey conducted at the end of June showed Crist with a 12‑point lead over Welch, while Welch’s support among Black voters fell from 55 % in March to 42 % in June, narrowing the gap to 12 points.

Crist’s campaign reported more than $1.2 million in available funds, compared with less than $260,000 for Welch’s campaign and affiliated committee.

Additional endorsements include state Senator Darryl Rouson, who switched his support to Crist after initially backing Welch, and Council Member Gina Driscoll, the first board member to endorse Crist, while Brandi Gabbard remains in the race.

The primary election is scheduled for August 18; if no candidate receives a majority, the top two finishers will advance to a runoff on November 3.

Byron Donalds raised nearly $5 million in the week ending July 3, bringing his total fundraising to almost $95 million since entering the Republican governor’s race in February 2025 and leaving more than $66 million in cash on hand, according to state election records. During that week the Seminole Tribe contributed $1 million and tech investor McCoy Ventures contributed $500,000 to Donalds’s political committee, Friends of Byron Donalds. Other candidates remained significantly lower in fundraising; James Fishback received less than $4,000 from donors other than Palm Beach investor Daniel Hassan, who contributed $150,000 this cycle for a total of $850,000. Fishback, who launched his campaign in November 2025, reported under $120,000 in cash on hand and incurred expenditures of $45,010 to Associated Security Services of Dover and $33,010 to Galvez Strategies of Alachua. Lt. Gov. Jay Collins raised just over $25,000 in the same period, bringing his cash on hand to roughly $3.2 million, and has been described as facing internal conflicts with DeSantis staff while saying his relationship with the governor remains amicable. Former House Speaker Paul Renner raised just over $12,000, leaving him with about $2 million in cash.

Graham Platner Submits Notice to Withdraw From Maine Senate Race

Platner denied a sexual assault allegation that emerged two days earlier.

Maine is a key state for control of the Senate, and Democrats had been seeking a candidate able to defeat Republican Senator Susan Collins. State law permits Democrats to name a replacement before the general election, but the name must be submitted by July 27. More than 100 state Democratic committee members have approved a nominating convention to choose a new candidate, though the party has not announced a schedule.

Several candidates have announced runs, including former CDC director Nirav Shah, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, former Senate President Troy Jackson, Dan Kleban, Jordan Wood, Paige Loud, David Costello, Andrea LaFlamme, and state Representative Valli Geiger. The party has not responded to requests for comment, and the timeline for selecting a replacement remains unresolved.

DOJ Subpoenas New York Times Journalists Over Air Force One Security Report

105d ago · Source: motherjones

Four New York Times journalists were served subpoenas by the Justice Department on Friday, and each was ordered to appear before a federal grand jury on Wednesday. Federal agents delivered the subpoenas at the journalists' residences, according to the newspaper.

The subpoenas relate to a July 2026 Times report that said President Trump used a previously owned Air Force One aircraft during a NATO summit in Turkey after the Secret Service recommended the move, citing security concerns. The article noted that the new $400 million jet donated by Qatar required additional security upgrades, a process the Air Force has said began in September and could cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

The subpoenas, issued by U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Jay Clayton, do not specify the precise testimony the reporters are expected to provide. Before the story was published, a senior FBI official requested that the newsroom refrain from releasing it, citing national security concerns, but no further explanation was offered. David McRaw, the newspaper's senior attorney, said the subpoenas appeared intended to restrict public knowledge of the situation. Seth Stern, chief of advocacy at the Freedom of the Press Foundation, stated that the subpoenas could chill reporting and that concerns about reputational security do not outweigh the need for a free and independent press.

Deep‑sea hydrothermal vent environments, where water temperatures exceed 450 °C, host numerous mollusk species adapted to extreme conditions; two‑thirds of the deep‑sea vent mollusks are threatened with extinction due to deep‑sea mining. The desert rain frog, which survives with minimal water by burrowing in sand and emerging at night, is classified as vulnerable because of diamond mining, energy infrastructure expansion, and increased demand from the pet trade. Conservation actions have helped the numbat, a marsupial that feeds on termites, rebound from about 300 individuals in the late 1970s to between 2,000 and 3,000 today, moving its status from endangered to near threatened. Management efforts such as predator baiting, fencing, captive breeding, and translocations have established additional self‑sustaining populations. Experts noted that ongoing conservation is needed. However, the species occupies less than 0.04 % of its historic range, and ongoing conservation efforts are required. The IUCN also reported that emperor penguins are now considered in danger of extinction because of chick mortality linked to diminishing sea ice. More than 40 Australian mammal species have been declared extinct, largely due to predation by feral cats and foxes. The IUCN red list contains 175,909 species, of which 49,505 are threatened. The organization voted for a moratorium on deep‑sea mining in 2021, and marine protected areas currently safeguard some vent species, including the critically endangered snail Lirapex felix in the Indian Ocean.

Rep. Ro Khanna Says He Was Detained by Israeli Military and Settlers in West Bank

105d ago · Source: pbs

Democratic Representative Ro Khanna said he was detained by Israeli soldiers and West Bank settlers on July 9 while on a three‑day tour of the occupied West Bank, and was released after the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem and Israeli police intervened. The incident took place in the village of Khirbet Zanuta, where masked men with firearms stopped Khanna’s group and prevented it from leaving. A New York Times photographer witnessed the confrontation. Khanna said that when Israeli troops arrived, they observed settlers interacting with his party while blocking the exit. He noted that only after the U.S. Embassy and Israeli police were contacted were the group allowed to continue. In a fundraising email sent after the event, Khanna wrote that the episode illustrated the challenges faced by Palestinians without security or a national platform. He is exploring a presidential campaign for 2028. The Israeli Defense Forces said it received a report that Israeli citizens were blocking foreign nationals and media in Khirbet Zanuta. Upon receiving the report, troops were dispatched, dispersed the civilians and reopened the road. The military stated its soldiers did not take part in blocking the road. Democratic criticism of Israel has increased since the Gaza war, with a recent Associated Press‑NORC poll indicating that 58% of Democrats believe the United States is “too supportive” of Israel. Former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a possible White House contender, delivered a speech in Tel Aviv in which he described Israel as a “territorial pariah.” The Israeli military also reported detaining four suspects who blocked a vehicle of foreign journalists in Sinjil, damaging the vehicle and wielding clubs and knives; the journalists were covering the one‑year anniversary of the death of a Palestinian‑American man killed by settlers. Settlement construction and related violence have risen in the West Bank in recent years. Israeli officials describe such incidents as isolated, while the international community regards settlements as illegal. The Netanyahu government maintains the West Bank is disputed territory whose final status is subject to negotiations, and several cabinet ministers have pushed for formal annexation. The episode highlights diplomatic friction between the United States and Israel and raises questions about the safety of foreign visitors in the West Bank.

Trump Justice Department Investigates Alleged Corruption in Argentina's Soccer Association

105d ago · Source: politico

Reports indicate that the U.S. Justice Department is investigating alleged corruption involving Argentina’s national soccer association, according to La Nacion and the Miami Herald.

La Nacion reported on Wednesday that U.S. prosecutors questioned a businessperson via Zoom earlier this month while Argentina competed in the World Cup. The Miami Herald confirmed that the probe focuses on TourProdEnter LLC, a Florida company that handled promotional deals for the Argentine Football Association.

Argentina’s soccer association and individuals linked to TourProdEnter have denied wrongdoing, and no charges have been filed. The association did not respond to a request for comment.

The investigation has attracted attention because the Trump administration, after taking office in 2025, paused enforcement of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act for several months. Incoming Justice Department officials said previous administrations had used the statute to bring criminal cases that they deemed unrelated to U.S. interests.

Legal experts note that the earlier soccer corruption probe, launched under President Barack Obama, resulted in convictions of a dozen individuals and led to leadership changes at FIFA. Appeals in some of those cases have continued, including a May appearance by U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella in Brooklyn to defend the department’s decision to dismiss a case against a former Fox television executive, whose conviction for paying bribes for broadcast rights was later reinstated by an appeals court.

Nocella said the department is prioritizing counterterrorism, national security, drug and human trafficking, and violent gangs, according to the Associated Press.

The status of the Argentina investigation remains unclear, as it is uncertain whether the probe proceeds because some alleged conduct occurred in the United States or because new evidence has emerged that would make the case a priority under current policy. The FBI has declined to comment on the matter.

Florida Citrus Mutual Endorses Wilton Simpson for Re-election as Agriculture Commissioner

105d ago · Source: floridapolitics

The Florida Citrus Mutual, representing about 1,500 growers, announced its endorsement of Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson for re-election.

The organization, founded in 1948, says its members generate roughly $6.9 billion in annual economic impact and employ more than 32,500 people on 208,183 acres.

Simpson, a former Senate President, has more than $33 million on hand and received a Trump endorsement and support from 61 of Florida’s 67 sheriffs.

His primary opponents include a Clearwater welder who changed his name to ‘Matt The Welder’ and two Democratic candidates, Joey Mendoza Atkins and Donald Prichard.

The endorsement follows a budget allocation of nearly $140 million for the 2025‑2026 fiscal year and an additional $196 million this year, including $160 million for the Citrus Research and Field Trial Foundation to accelerate research and combat citrus greening.

Simpson said he is grateful to partner with the growers to protect Florida agriculture’s future.

The primary election is set for August 18, and the outcome will determine the next agriculture commissioner.

Norwegian Minister Highlights Inclusive Sports Model Ahead of World Cup Quarterfinal

105d ago · Source: politico

Lubna Jaffery, Norway’s minister of culture and equality, said in Miami’s South Beach that the country’s focus on broad participation and public investment has helped it produce world‑class athletes across sports, a factor she says underpins the upcoming World Cup quarterfinal against England.

Norway, with a population of about 5.6 million, has built a sports system that encourages children to try multiple activities without early specialization, emphasizing fun and affordable access for families of all income levels. Jaffery said this inclusive approach, supported by the Labour Party government, has been a longstanding political priority.

She noted that while Norway supports its football and Olympic federations’ opposition to allowing Russian athletes to return to competition, the final decisions rest with the International Olympic Committee and FIFA, which are considering Russia’s reintegration after the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

Regarding the match, Jaffery said England’s recent track record suggests a likely win, though she expressed hope for Norway and described the contest as challenging. She added that teaching competitive skills is necessary for athletes who aim to compete professionally, while maintaining the inclusive foundation of the Norwegian model.

Rick Singh Gains Law Enforcement Endorsement in Orange County Clerk Race

105d ago · Source: floridapolitics

Rick Singh, the former Orange County Property Appraiser, received an endorsement from the Florida State Fraternal Order of Police and its District 7 as he seeks to return to elected office as Clerk of Court. The endorsement adds law enforcement backing to his campaign ahead of the Democratic primary on August 18.

Singh served two terms as property appraiser before losing his 2020 re-election bid to Democrat Amy Mercado. He now faces term‑limited County Commissioner Maribel Gomez Cordero and Roberta Walton Johnson, the clerk’s office general counsel, in the primary. The primary winner will meet independent candidate Terrell Thomas, a real estate agent, in November.

The Florida State Fraternal Order of Police, the largest organization of sworn law enforcement officers worldwide, and its District 7, which covers ten Central Florida counties including Orange, issued the endorsement. Jeff Stinson, president of the Florida State FOP, said, "Rick Singh recognizes the importance of public institutions and the role of the Clerk of Court in supporting the justice system." Gus Marinoni, District 7 director, said the office should be led by someone with proven executive experience and a commitment to fair and efficient public service. Henning added that Singh has been accessible and professional and has worked to strengthen public confidence in government.

Singh reported raising about $106,000 in April and May combined, including $25,000 of his own money. The endorsement follows a previous endorsement from the Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s Political Operations Division.

The primary is one of several contested judicial races in Orange County, and the endorsement is expected to be among the organizational supports in the contest.

Federal Judge Awards Hunter Biden $1.7 Million in Defamation Suit

Federal Judge Awards Hunter Biden $1.7 Million in Defamation Suit.

A federal judge on Friday awarded Hunter Biden $1.7 million in punitive damages in a defamation lawsuit he filed against former Overstock.com CEO Patrick Byrne.

Biden sued Byrne in 2023, alleging that Byrne made false statements that Biden had offered Iran a $800 million bribe to unfreeze $8 billion in assets and to ease U.S. policy during nuclear talks.

Byrne, a Trump supporter who denied the 2020 election results, told the court he believed the statements were true because an Iranian official had described the scheme to him, but he provided no documentary evidence.

Judge Stephen Wilson, appointed during the Reagan administration, concluded that Byrne knew the story was false and that much of the narrative was fabricated.

The judge noted that Byrne did not appear for a scheduled October trial and had dismissed his lead attorney, resulting in a default judgment.

Wilson ordered Byrne to pay $1 in nominal damages, $1.7 million in punitive damages and about $35,000 in sanctions.

In a statement to The Guardian, Biden's attorney Bryan Sullivan said the judgment confirmed that Byrne's claims of treason were fabricated and warned that further repetition would lead to additional litigation.

Attorneys representing Byrne did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The ruling comes as Hunter Biden expands his online presence with political commentary, mental health advocacy and a planned series of Substack essays, and after his father, former President Joe Biden, granted him a pardon for federal gun and tax convictions earlier in the administration.

The judgment stands pending any potential appeal.

Henry Rollins and Ian MacKaye Revive Cramps Album Through New Vengeance Records

105d ago · Source: motherjones

Henry Rollins, 65, former frontman of Black Flag and later the Rollins Band, and Ian MacKaye, co‑founder of Dischord Records, announced a project to release the previously unreleased Cramps album Gravest Gravy. The album, recorded in 1977 in Poison Ivy’s Los Angeles garage and produced by Alex Chilton, will be issued on August 21 through the revived Vengeance Records label. Rollins said he financed travel to retrieve the tapes, spending more than 30 hours driving a cargo van with the recordings. He is not being paid for the effort and described his role as archivist. The project also includes merchandise such as t‑shirts and colored‑vinyl pressings intended to benefit Ivy, who remains the primary beneficiary. Larry Hardy, owner of In The Red Records, and producer Jimmy Maslon are assisting with the release. Rollins emphasized his commitment to preserving the band’s catalog while avoiding political commentary. He noted that art and culture remain important amid contemporary challenges. The Cramps, formed by Lux Interior and Poison Ivy in the early 1970s, ended with Lux’s death in 2009. The new release marks the first public availability of Gravest Gravy.
