Former Microsoft developer Dave Plummer has released a beta version of a macOS port of the Windows Task Manager, called Task Manager OG (TMOG). The beta aims to provide an alternative to Apple's native Activity Monitor. Plummer said Activity Monitor does not provide sufficient explanation of system resource usage, prompting him to create the new tool. The original Windows Task Manager began as an 80KB utility; the macOS version is written in Swift and contains no original Windows code. He obtained the XP Task Manager source code from Microsoft with permission to demonstrate and share it, but the macOS build was created from scratch. Plummer said Apple's sandbox requirements prevent the application from accessing the functions it needs, and Apple states that no app may terminate other applications. Because of these restrictions, he distributed the beta directly from the project website rather than through the Mac App Store. He plans to release a Windows version of TMOG in the future and may develop a Pro version later. KitGuru asked if users with macOS systems would try Plummer's Task Manager for Mac.
