Ken Martin, chair of the Democratic National Committee, has avoided media appearances and has not announced any major changes to the organization. He has faced increasing criticism from party members and some state leaders. The DNC is tasked with building national infrastructure and raising funds to support the party's presidential nominee. Internal concerns have emerged over his communication with donors and fundraising performance. State party leaders and committee members have expressed concern that Martin's communication with donors and key stakeholders has been limited. Critics have called for his resignation, saying his leadership has hampered fundraising and weakened the party's prospects in the upcoming midterm elections. Supporters, including Colorado Democratic Party Chair Shad Murib, have defended Martin, stating he remains committed to the party's objectives. In a Substack post, Martin wrote that the Democratic Party will be ready to win at all levels. Maryland Governor Wes Moore declined to directly assess Martin's confidence, saying his confidence is in the system rather than party bosses. Former Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley has been mentioned as a possible replacement, though he has not responded to inquiries. Federal filings show the DNC had about $16.3 million in cash and $18 million in debt at the end of June, compared with the Republican National Committee's $128 million cash and no debt. The DNC has used its Washington headquarters as collateral for a $15 million line of credit, a decision that critics have cited as evidence of financial mismanagement, though similar collateral arrangements have been used by previous chairs. Martin noted that the DNC has raised more money than any previous committee without the White House in its 198‑year history. Hakeem Jeffries, House Democratic leader, said he continues to support Martin while campaigning in Pennsylvania. Kansas Democratic Party Chair Jeanna Repass praised Martin for distributing funds to state parties, saying the party needs unity now. Rufus Gifford, finance chairman for President Joe Biden's reelection campaign, wrote that the DNC under Martin is spiraling toward irrelevance and urged the party to acknowledge the problem and fix it. One ally likened the fallout to the aftermath of Biden's debate performance that led to his withdrawal from the 2024 reelection race. Martin has traveled extensively, visiting six states in the past two weeks and meeting with civil rights leaders in Nashville and mayors in Atlanta. Members expect a potential leadership change at the DNC's winter meeting after the November elections, but no clear alternative has emerged.
