Ceuta, Spain — A 20‑year-old Moroccan migrant, who asked that her last name be withheld, said she wants to remain in Spain after swimming to the enclave with her younger sister and cousin on Thursday. She has survived five days relying on meals provided by local residents and does not know when her next meal will arrive.
The border between Morocco and Ceuta was breached on Thursday and Friday when roughly 60,000 migrants attempted to cross, resulting in at least 72 reported deaths and creating a humanitarian strain in the city.
Dikra, who worked as a cleaner in Morocco, hopes to use a hairdressing diploma in mainland Spain but cannot return to Morocco because her father, who was an alcoholic, posed a safety risk.
Abdel Karim, 35, another Moroccan migrant, waited outside the official reception center on Sunday and asked for information about the fate of those still in the city. He said he crossed with 10 euros and blistered feet and that he is willing to take any work he can find.
Senegalese migrant Cesse Aliou, 25, said he earned about 279 euros per month in Morocco before traveling to Ceuta. He described a lack of food and water and said a scuffle over water broke out among migrants near the shelter.
The Spanish authorities have not announced a timeline for processing the remaining migrants, and their future status remains unresolved.
