Washington (AP) — Senator Bernie Moreno said Rep. Max Miller should not serve in the House and urged that he seek professional help after domestic abuse allegations were aired in a video on X.
Miller, a former White House adviser during the Trump administration, is involved in a custody dispute with his ex‑wife Emily Moreno, who alleges that he scalded, struck and threatened her while they were married. Miller denies the allegations and says he will stay in his reelection race, which has a filing deadline on Wednesday.
In a lengthy post, Moreno wrote that Miller fails basic standards of character required for elected office and that he is a danger to his daughter and granddaughter, adding that Miller needs serious psychological help. He said the congressman should not serve in the House of Representatives. Miller, who has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump, responded that the accusations are false, that he has denied abusing his former wife and daughter, and that he will not drop out of the race. Trump said that so far the claims are accusations and that he would look into the matter. The scrutiny of Miller has intensified in recent weeks. Court filings and police reports detailed allegations that he caused a broken collarbone to his two‑year‑old daughter. Miller released a large cache of investigative documents, court filings and audio‑visual clips related to the custody dispute. A spokesperson for Emily Moreno said the video was "shameful" and that the couple used their daughter as a political pawn, asserting confidence that justice will be decided in court. State officials and Republican candidates such as State Rep. Mike Dovilla and former state senator Kevin Coughlin have been discussed as possible replacements if Miller exits the race. Democrats have called for Miller's resignation, requested a congressional ethics investigation, and are increasing support for Democratic challenger Brian Poindexter.
Miller must meet the Wednesday deadline to replace himself, and the implications of the domestic abuse allegations and any congressional action remain uncertain.
