ssh.place, a Hacker News Show HN project, lets anyone draw on a 200×60 cell canvas over SSH without creating an account or installing software. The server currently shows 23 users online and 5,667 of 12,000 cells drawn.
The canvas operates via SSH; participants may move the cursor with arrow keys, WASD, or the hjkl keys, and scroll to pan across the wider terminal. Colors are selected by entering a number from 0 to 9, with tab cycling through 16 palette options, and the space bar places a solid block of the chosen color. The server rejects any input containing characters, preventing text entry, and enforces a 15‑second cooldown per SSH key, meaning reconnection does not reset the timer.
According to the project description, the page reads the canvas only and updates over SSH, with no other functionality. Users continue to contribute as the cooldown period resets with each new SSH connection.
