U.S. Air Force Reserve’s 442nd Fighter Wing will retire its A-10 Warthog aircraft and receive 24 F-15E Strike Eagle jets at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri beginning fiscal year 2031. The Air Force approved the basing action in a press release from Representative Mark Alford’s office, which said the transition will preserve a Reserve combat‑coded fighter unit and continue the wing’s long‑standing mission. The first aircraft are expected to arrive in FY2031, aligning with the service’s updated A-10 retirement schedule that now extends the Warthog’s service through 2030. The F-15Es will be sourced from existing Strike Eagle squadrons at Seymour‑Johnson Air Force Base, Mountain Home Air Force Base, and RAF Lakenheath, as well as from test and evaluation units. The Air Force currently holds 212 F-15E aircraft, of which some are older models equipped with Pratt & Whitney F100‑PW‑220 engines and others with the more powerful F100‑PW‑229 variants. The planned conversion is part of a broader effort to modernize the fighter fleet and address capacity shortfalls created by recent combat losses. The decision follows similar announcements for other A‑10 units, including the Michigan Air National Guard’s 127th Wing, which will transition to F‑15EX aircraft. Legislative proposals have been introduced to keep A‑10s in service beyond 2030, and Congress has blocked the Air Force from retiring additional Strike Eagles through September 2027. The transition marks the first step in a series of force‑structure changes for the Air Force Reserve.
