Bitcoin posts strongest quarter since 2024 amid shifting market dynamics

22d ago · Source: cryptoslate

Bitcoin has recorded its strongest quarterly performance since 2024, rising 43% in the third quarter and positioning itself for its second-best third-quarter gain since 2013. The asset has now posted its third-strongest quarterly advance since spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds began trading in January 2024, according to data from Bitfinex and CoinGlass. The rebound follows a 22.2% decline in the first quarter and a 14.09% drop in the second, with the asset recovering 43.88% in the third quarter of 2026.

The price movement occurred despite rising bond yields and a Treasury initiative aimed at improving liquidity in longer-dated government debt. While the Treasury announced plans to double the size of liquidity-support buybacks for longer maturities to $4 billion per operation, beginning September 9, Bitcoin’s price rose nearly 30% following the announcement. The 10-year Treasury yield increased by 81 basis points over the quarter, reaching multi-decade highs and raising the hurdle for non-yielding assets.

Traditional financial markets showed limited movement during the same period, with the Nasdaq Composite gaining about 5%, the S&P 500 roughly 4%, and gold less than 2% according to StatMuse data. Ethereum outperformed Bitcoin during the broader crypto rebound, which expanded beyond the market leader. Institutional demand returned in August and September, absorbing sellers who had been underwater for much of 2026.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs emerged as a key source of capital as financial conditions tightened elsewhere. Net inflows reversed from approximately $5 billion in year-to-date outflows at the end of July to about $1 billion in inflows by late September, a shift of roughly $6 billion over two months. The largest weekly intake occurred in the final week of September, reaching $2.39 billion—the biggest weekly inflow since October 2025. Daily inflows declined from $999 million on September 21 to about $135 million by September 25.

Analysts at Nexo noted that Bitcoin entered the fourth quarter with stronger spot demand and an improving market structure, though the outlook remained dependent on sustained ETF buying, continued absorption of overhead supply, and contained inflation to avoid further Federal Reserve tightening. At the same time, leveraged traders were reducing exposure, with Bitcoin futures open interest declining from over 700,000 BTC on September 21 to about 644,000—the lowest level since early January—according to Bitfinex. The seven-day contraction of roughly 49,000 BTC was the largest since October 2025, and CME open interest fell by 16,075 BTC on one day, marking its third-biggest daily decline on record.

Futures premiums compressed and implied volatility remained near a one-year low, reducing the potential for leveraged sell-offs while also diminishing speculative buying that can drive sharp advances. This shift placed greater responsibility on investors purchasing Bitcoin directly rather than through leveraged instruments.

Bitfinex estimated that the amount of Bitcoin with a cost basis between $82,500 and $84,000 nearly tripled to 306,000 tokens over three days as buyers absorbed coins sold by profitable holders below market price and newer investors exiting at losses above it. A concentration of approximately 1.39 million BTC was held between $84,000 and $86,500, including long-term holders returning toward breakeven and recent buyers whose positions turned unprofitable after Bitcoin retreated from its September 21 peak near $87,400.

Supply clusters were observed near $63,000–$65,000, $77,000–$80,000, and $85,000–$86,500, with a sharp concentration of sellers near $85,000. CryptoQuant reported that Bitcoin reclaimed its 365-day moving average for the first time since March 2023, a level historically associated with transitions into bullish market regimes.

The realized price, approximating the average cost basis of coins in circulation, rose to about $77,000 and held through the recovery. Bitfinex’s ratio of ETF purchases to daily miner issuance fell from 25.6 times to 1.8 times between the $999 million inflow session and September 29, suggesting growing pressure to absorb overhead supply. The firm estimated the ratio would need to recover toward five times issuance—equivalent to roughly $190 million of daily ETF demand—to accelerate absorption.

A move above $85,000 would return approximately 760,000 BTC to profit and lift Bitcoin’s supply-in-profit measure back toward the 75% threshold associated with stronger bull-market phases, up from 71.3% on September 29. Additional supply concentrations were identified near $88,000–$90,000 and $96,700, with options traders positioning for potential upside.

Seasonality patterns suggest Bitcoin’s fourth quarter historically delivers the strongest returns, with average gains of 77% to 85% since 2013 depending on the dataset. BloFin Research projected that matching its historical average from current levels could push Bitcoin toward $147,000, while a median fourth-quarter return of 47.73% would imply a price near $123,000. These projections are mechanical and do not account for evolving cycle dynamics or monetary policy constraints.

Market expectations for Federal Reserve policy introduced near-term uncertainty. At the start of the week, markets assigned roughly a 65% probability to a quarter-point rate increase in October, but softer-than-expected inflation data on September 25 reduced that probability to about 38%. The Fed was scheduled to meet on October 27–28, with another decision following on December 8–9.

September 28 also highlighted Bitcoin’s sensitivity to broad market positioning. The Nasdaq-100, gold, and Bitcoin all declined together as investors reduced exposure across asset classes, a pattern interpreted as indicative of broad deleveraging rather than a rotation into safe-haven assets.

Bitfinex identified $81,300 as a critical support level; sustained trading below it alongside renewed ETF outflows could test the realized-price region near $77,000. Conversely, stronger ETF demand and a breakout above $86,500 could bring Bitcoin closer to its yearly open near $87,700 before encountering supply near $90,000.

The October 2 U.S. payrolls report was expected to provide additional economic context ahead of the next inflation release and the Fed’s October meeting, occurring as Bitcoin entered its historically strongest quarter with Treasury yields remaining above 5%.

Open USD stablecoin launches with $1 billion liquidity commitment from Coinbase, Mastercard, Stripe and Visa

22d ago · Source: coindesk

Open USD, a new dollar‑pegged stablecoin, went live on Wednesday across Ethereum, Solana, Coinbase’s Base and Stripe‑backed Tempo blockchains, marking the first public issuance of the Open Standard project. The launch follows a June announcement and positions the token as a payment, banking and institutional trading tool in a market still dominated by USDT and USDC.

Zach Abrams, chief executive of Open Standard, said the initiative aims to make stablecoins as ubiquitous as the U.S. dollar, emphasizing utility over speculation. Open Standard’s founding partners — Coinbase, Mastercard, Visa, Shopify and Stripe — each hold an equal initial equity stake and have collectively pledged more than $1 billion to provide liquidity for OUSD over the coming months. Abrams noted that the majority of the cap table will eventually be distributed to founders and network participants based on contributions to OUSD supply and activity.

The project’s governance model differs from a traditional consortium. While Open Standard has corporate investors, its management operates independently rather than through a large committee of partners. A smaller group of founding partners will hold board seats, while the broader network of more than 200 companies — including recent additions such as UBS, Japan’s SBI Holdings and fintech Jeeves — will earn rewards tied to their role in expanding OUSD supply and transaction volume.

Under Open Standard’s economic model, founding partners do not receive a preferential revenue share. Instead, they earn equity rewards proportional to the amount of OUSD they generate and the transaction activity they drive, meeting thresholds that the company has not disclosed. Abrams indicated that equity will be released over four to five years, incentivizing partners to move the token rather than merely hold it.

The launch comes as stablecoin issuers seek new ways to distribute interest earnings from backing assets. Unlike Tether and Circle, which retain most of the interest from their reserves, Open Standard plans to channel a portion of that income to partners based on their contributions. This approach could lower costs for firms moving large volumes of money, as Open USD eliminates minting and burning fees.

Romero, chief business officer of Tempo, projected that OUSD could reach roughly $1 billion in liquidity on Tempo within months, potentially climbing to $10 billion by 2027 and surpassing $100 billion in the longer term. Open Standard intends to issue OUSD on multiple blockchains, with Tempo competing to become the deepest liquidity pool.

Abrams suggested that demand for stablecoins will eventually extend beyond the U.S. dollar. He cited Bridge, the firm he previously led, which issued a euro‑backed token for Revolut, as evidence of interest in other currencies. The long‑term vision includes scaling OUSD transaction volume to “hundreds of trillions of dollars a year” as stablecoins become part of global money‑movement infrastructure.

Bitcoin and Ether Post Strongest Quarterly Gains Since 2024 and 2021 Amid Market Volatility

22d ago · Source: coindesk

Bitcoin and ether logged their most robust quarterly performance since 2024 and 2021 respectively, even as markets fluctuated on Wednesday. Bitcoin edged up 0.4% to $83,500 over the past 24 hours, yet still managed to close the quarter with roughly a 44% gain, its best three‑month stretch since the first quarter of 2024 when it rose 68.7%, according to data from Coinglass. Ether climbed 0.7% to $2,694, marking a 70.9% increase for the quarter, the strongest since the first quarter of 2021 when it surged 160.7%.

The rally followed a surprisingly soft August personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, which showed inflation running below expectations. The report initially lifted risk assets, pushing the 10‑year U.S. Treasury yield down to 5.218% and the 30‑year yield to 5.63%, levels not seen since 2002. However, bond sellers quickly reasserted pressure, driving yields back up and erasing much of the early gains. The 10‑year yield later rose to 5.30%, its highest point in more than two decades.

Micron Technology reported fiscal fourth‑quarter adjusted earnings per share of $33.42, slightly below the $33.61 consensus, while revenue of $54.23 billion exceeded the $51.1 billion forecast. The company projects first‑quarter 2027 revenue of $61.5 billion, above the $57 billion estimate, and adjusted earnings of $38.15 per share, surpassing the $35.40 consensus. After‑hours trading reflected a modest 1.1% rise in Micron’s share price.

Bond markets experienced a reversal of earlier optimism. The 10‑year Treasury yield, which had dipped after the inflation data, climbed to 5.276%, while the 30‑year yield edged up to 5.63%. Both yields remain near multi‑year highs despite the earlier dip.

Hut 8’s chief strategy officer Michael Ho was cited in a filing suggesting the sale of 1.5 million shares, prompting a 4.8% decline in the stock during afternoon trading. CEO Asher Genoot clarified on X that Ho had not sold shares on the open market; rather, the shares listed represented collateral for a borrowing arrangement, and Ho has not sold any shares since the company’s inception.

The Federal Reserve’s Office of Inspector General released a report on the agency’s $1.3 billion renovation of its Eccles Building headquarters, noting deficiencies in project management but finding no evidence of criminal misconduct. The findings could influence Chairman Jerome Powell’s future role at the central bank.

South Korea’s central bank announced plans to purchase approximately one ton of domestically produced gold, its first acquisition in 13 years, as part of a strategy to diversify foreign reserves. Gold holdings currently represent 3.4% of the bank’s assets, totaling 104.4 tons.

Analysts noted that long‑term bitcoin holders now account for 80% of the cryptocurrency’s supply, an all‑time high according to Glassnode’s HODL Waves data. This cohort includes coins that have remained unmoved for at least 155 days, reflecting sustained accumulation through the recent bear market when bitcoin’s price fell from $126,000 to $60,000.

Looking ahead, market participants are watching upcoming economic releases, including the Chicago PMI, which surged to 58.8 in September, far above the forecasted 51.2. The next major data point will be the national jobs report due on Friday, which could further shape expectations for Federal Reserve policy.

While some analysts see potential for further upside if inflation pressures ease and Treasury yields decline, others caution that real yields remain a significant headwind for bitcoin. Joel Kruger of LMAX Group highlighted that lower U.S. yields could improve global financial conditions and provide additional tailwinds for both bitcoin and ether.

Standard Chartered has projected that Ethena’s ENA token could reach $2 by the end of 2028, implying a nearly 670% increase from its current price of 26 cents. The bank cited growing demand for yield‑bearing stablecoins and expanding tokenized assets as key drivers.

Gold edged closer to $4,200 per ounce, a level that analysts say must be sustained for a new rally to gain momentum. Simon‑Peter Massabni of XS.com noted that a daily or four‑hour close above this threshold would signal a potential upward trend.

Overall, the cryptocurrency market remains resilient despite heightened volatility in traditional financial markets. Bitcoin’s quarterly performance underscores its ability to generate strong returns even amid shifting macroeconomic conditions, while ether’s gains highlight the broader upward momentum within the digital asset space.

Huawei Launches Mate 90 Series, Emphasizes Domestic Chip Design Amid U.S. Restrictions

Huawei unveiled its Mate 90 smartphone series on October 1, introducing a new lineup that relies on its own chip architecture and operating system to navigate ongoing U.S.

By · 22d ago · Source: reuters

Huawei unveiled its Mate 90 smartphone series on October 1, introducing a new lineup that relies on its own chip architecture and operating system to navigate ongoing U.S. restrictions on advanced semiconductor exports. The launch comes as the company faces persistent supply constraints for high-end chips, particularly in China, where domestic manufacturing capacity remains limited.

Consumer business chief Richard Yu confirmed during a press briefing that Huawei continues to operate within tight boundaries for advanced chip availability. "Advanced semiconductor capacity remains very limited in China," Yu stated, "and Huawei's Ascend AI chips also draw on that same capacity." He noted that while smartphone pricing has risen, shipment volumes have not kept pace, reflecting broader industry pressures.

The Mate 90 series succeeds the Mate 80 line from November 2025 and features premium models powered by Huawei's Kirin 9050 Pro system-on-chip. This chip employs a technique Huawei calls "LogicFolding," which restructures internal wiring in three dimensions to increase processing density and speed. The approach requires more silicon wafers per unit but enables performance gains despite physical limitations.

Eric Xu, Huawei's rotating chairman, previously indicated that supply of Ascend 950 AI chips fell short of domestic demand due to capacity constraints. Yu reiterated that China's semiconductor manufacturing still depends on deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography tools, with extreme ultraviolet (EUV) technology still under development by local producers.

Huawei plans to increase the use of LogicFolding-based chips in future devices. The company did not name the manufacturer of the Kirin 9050 Pro, though industry analysts widely believe Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) produces these chips in China. SMIC did not comment on the matter.

The new devices run on HarmonyOS 7, Huawei's Android-free operating system, which the company says supports over 450,000 applications and services. No pricing details have been disclosed.

Rising component costs have pressured smartphone manufacturers, with memory prices adding approximately $200 to the cost per handset. Yu said Huawei has responded by adjusting prices more gradually than in previous cycles.

According to data from IDC, China's domestic smartphone shipments declined 7% year-on-year from January to August, even as Huawei's shipments in the country rose 13%. The average smartphone price in China reached $543 in the second quarter, up 11.3% year-on-year, while Huawei's average selling price fell 14.7% to $628.

Huawei's market position in foldable devices remains strong, with approximately 75% share in China. Yu noted that sales of the Pura X Max foldable phone increased 76% week-on-week immediately after Apple announced its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo. The Pura X Max, similar in size to Apple's offering, has shipped over 1.2 million units in China since its April release.

Apple is projected to ship 6 million iPhone Duo units in 2026, with China expected to account for nearly 25% of those sales, according to Counterpoint Research.

U.S. Combat Troops Depart Iraq After 23-Year Presence

22d ago · Source: motherjones

After 23 years of military involvement, the final U.S. combat brigade left Iraq on Wednesday, marking the end of a conflict that began with the 2003 invasion. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed the withdrawal in a statement describing the transition as the "successful conclusion" of operations against the Islamic State. The war, initiated under the premise that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction, resulted in hundreds of thousands of civilian fatalities and cost over a trillion dollars in direct expenditures, though precise figures remain subject to accounting complexities. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld had previously projected a brief conflict duration in 2002, estimating operations would not exceed five months. U.S. forces previously withdrew in 2011 following the Bush administration's tenure, though renewed deployments occurred in 2014 under Operation Inherent Resolve to counter ISIS advances. Mother Jones documented ongoing combat operations through its "We’re Still At War" series until 2014. By 2021, the U.S. formally concluded its combat role, though approximately 2,500 personnel remained as military advisers until their departure this week. Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi stated the withdrawal reflects Iraq’s "sovereignty, the strength of its institutions, the readiness of its forces, the unity of its decision-making, and balanced partnerships with its friends." The transition represents a symbolic endpoint to a war that reshaped regional dynamics and U.S. military strategy over multiple presidential administrations.

Former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem Files for Divorce After 34-Year Marriage

22d ago · Source: guardian-politics

A court filing in Hamlin County, South Dakota, revealed that former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has initiated divorce proceedings against her husband, Bryon Noem, after 34 years of marriage. The petition cites irreconcilable differences and was signed by Noem’s attorney, Michael Sabers, on April 6. The filing follows the recent release of photographs depicting Bryon Noem wearing exaggerated prosthetic breasts in a spandex garment, an image first published by the Daily Mail. At the time, Noem described the photos as “devastating” and said her family had been “blindsided” by their circulation. The divorce documents were only submitted to the court this week, according to reporting by the New York Times.

Noem’s legal representative confirmed the filing and indicated that further commentary would be reserved for the legal process. Bryon Noem’s attorney, Tim Bottum, stated his client was “saddened that the marriage is ending” and expressed willingness to share his perspective if court proceedings required it. Bottum added that Bryon’s priority is protecting the family and moving forward as loving parents and grandparents.

The divorce filing comes weeks after Noem’s dismissal from the Department of Homeland Security. Her tenure ended amid heightened scrutiny of her conduct, including testimony before a congressional committee in March. During that hearing, a Democratic representative questioned her about an alleged romantic relationship with Corey Lewandowski, then-aide to former President Donald Trump. Noem responded by dismissing the inquiry as “tabloid garbage,” though she did not deny the allegations. She had been accompanied at the hearing by her husband.

Noem’s removal from federal office followed reportedly contentious exchanges regarding a taxpayer-funded publicity campaign that promoted her public image. She had previously informed the committee that Trump had approved the spending. Her departure preceded the appointment of Markwayne Mullin as the new Homeland Security Secretary.

Noem’s time in office was marked by controversy, including criticism for referring to two protest-related deaths in Minneapolis as those of “domestic terrorists.” The victims, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, died during an immigration enforcement operation. Noem, 54, and Bryon Noem, 56, married in 1992 and share three adult children.

The case remains pending, with no scheduled court dates or public hearings announced as of this reporting. Legal experts note that settlements in such cases often involve private negotiations and that the ultimate resolution may not become public without further procedural steps.

FBI Director Kash Patel Faces Multiple Scandals Amid Leadership Turmoil

22d ago · Source: motherjones

A series of controversies surrounding FBI Director Kash Patel have intensified in recent weeks, raising concerns about the bureau’s operational integrity and leadership stability. The most urgent issue involves a reported cyber intrusion that may have exposed sensitive personnel records of current and former FBI employees. A hacking collective identifying as ShinyHunters claimed to have accessed internal databases containing home addresses, Social Security numbers, and potentially medical records. While the group has stated it will not publish the data, experts warn that adversarial nations such as China, Russia, and Iran could exploit the stolen information. Former National Cyber Security Centre director Ciaran Martin noted that the breach’s long-term consequences could surpass the impact of prior cyber incidents involving federal personnel records.

Compounding the crisis, Deputy Director Andrew Bailey announced his departure after only one year in the role, following the earlier exit of Dan Bongino, a former podcast host and political appointee. Both departures stem from reported tensions between Patel and senior career officials, including allegations that Patel marginalized Bailey for raising constitutional concerns. Sources indicated Patel excluded Bailey from key meetings and reassigned officials who resisted politically motivated actions, such as investigations targeting individuals connected to former officials.

Patel’s conduct has also drawn scrutiny for ethical and partisan behavior. He has been photographed at political events alongside administration figures, made public remarks at campaign rallies, and engaged in disputes over policy changes affecting hiring standards. Recent revisions to FBI employment guidelines have sparked debate over whether past disqualifiers, such as involvement in sex work or other legal infractions, are being reevaluated without clear criteria. During a congressional hearing, Patel referenced bestiality in a manner that drew criticism for undermining the agency’s professional reputation. These incidents have contributed to a broader perception of instability within the FBI’s leadership structure.

The departures of senior officials and the handling of internal investigations have prompted discussions about the bureau’s capacity to maintain impartiality and operational focus. Career officials previously positioned for leadership roles, including women who had risen through intelligence and counterterrorism divisions, were removed during Patel’s tenure. Observers note that the current environment reflects a departure from longstanding norms of nonpartisan governance within the agency. As Patel prepares for international travel, including a planned visit to Russia, questions persist about the oversight of FBI operations and the implications of ongoing personnel and cybersecurity challenges for national security.

Defense Secretary Hegseth Announces Plan to Reduce Senior Military Officers by 20 Percent

22d ago · Source: guardian-politics

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that the Pentagon intends to reduce the number of generals and admirals by approximately 20 percent, describing the move as part of a broader effort to reshape the military’s leadership structure. During a speech at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, Hegseth stated that the department would no longer tolerate what he called “beardos, weirdos and wimps” in the armed forces, framing the change as a shift toward greater focus on combat readiness and discipline.

Hegseth cited the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier as an example of operational success, noting that about 80 percent of its crew remained deployed after a 286‑day mission that ended on September 1 in a Thai port. The carrier’s extended deployment, originally scheduled to conclude in May, was prolonged amid heightened tensions related to U.S. actions in Iran. Eight sailors assigned to the Lincoln had attempted suicide during the deployment, a fact that emerged in recent reports.

In his remarks, Hegseth criticized what he described as “woke” policies within the Pentagon and accused certain media outlets of publishing “false claims” about troop morale and deployment lengths. He asserted that the military’s primary mission should be training, readiness, accountability, discipline and lethality, and that personnel who do not align with these priorities would no longer hold key positions. He also announced a new Pentagon initiative that will involve Elon Musk, Palmer Luckey and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich in studying the future of warfare, though no specific objectives or timelines were disclosed.

The proposal to downsize senior officer ranks has drawn attention from various quarters. Some conservative institutions, including Liberty University, Hillsdale College, Louisiana State University, Mississippi University and Tuskegee University, are slated to join a partnership aimed at expanding the military’s educational pipeline. Notably, Hegseth himself is a graduate of Harvard University and Princeton University, both Ivy League schools that have previously been criticized by the administration as “DEI‑worshipping woke factories.”

No official timeline for the planned reductions has been released, and the Pentagon has not provided detailed metrics on how the cuts will be measured or implemented. The announcement comes amid ongoing debates about the role of diversity initiatives, leadership composition and the broader direction of U.S. defense policy.

NASA and SpaceX prepare to launch Crew-13 mission to the International Space Station

22d ago · Source: Spaceflight Now

A Falcon 9 rocket carrying SpaceX's Crew-13 mission is set to lift off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on Thursday morning, weather permitting. The launch will carry four astronauts to the International Space Station for a six-month expedition.

The crew consists of NASA astronaut Jessica Watkins, NASA astronaut Luke Delaney, Canadian Space Agency astronaut Joshua Kutryk, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov. Watkins will command the mission and become the first NASA astronaut to fly twice on a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. The spacecraft, named Grace, will dock with the ISS approximately eight hours after launch, marking the shortest transit time ever achieved by a Dragon vehicle.

Liftoff is scheduled for 11:10 a.m. EDT from Space Launch Complex 40. The Falcon 9 first stage booster, designated B1101, will attempt its third flight after previously supporting the Starlink 6-88 and Crew-12 missions. Following stage separation, the booster will target a landing at Landing Zone 40, which would mark its seventh touchdown at the site and the 664th Falcon booster recovery to date.

The 45th Weather Squadron forecasts a 55 percent chance of favorable launch conditions. Forecasters noted that a weak low-level disturbance moving along the Gulf Coast could bring breezy onshore flow and potential cloud cover or showers during the launch window. The primary concern remains coastal Atlantic shower activity, with exact timing still uncertain.

Watkins, a geologist and former branch chief in NASA's Astronaut Office, previously flew on the Crew-4 mission in 2022. She described her leadership approach as rooted in service, shaped by mentors and experiences across NASA programs including Artemis. "I would ideally like to be a servant leader," Watkins said. "That comes from coaches, mentors, teachers, and crewmates."

Delaney, a former test pilot at NASA's Langley Research Center, grew up in Central Florida watching space shuttle launches. "Seeing humans launch and return safely was a huge motivation," he said. He joined NASA's 2021 astronaut class after a career in aerospace engineering and aviation.

Kutryk, selected by the Canadian Space Agency in 2017, will fly as a mission specialist. He previously trained for a Starliner crew mission that was later converted to a cargo flight following technical issues with the spacecraft's crewed test. "This has been a lifelong dream," Kutryk said. "We've trained for years, and I'm proud to represent Canada and the CSA on this mission."

Teteryatnikov, a Roscosmos cosmonaut selected in 2021, began his training after participating in an open competition during his early career. He described a pivotal meeting that led to his application at age 30. "It started with a conversation," he said through a translator. "Then came the training, and now we're here."

The crew will join Expedition 75 aboard the ISS. After a brief handover with the Crew-12 mission, the current station residents will return to Earth aboard Dragon Freedom. The mission marks continued collaboration between NASA, SpaceX, CSA, and Roscosmos as part of ongoing ISS operations.

Weather monitoring continues ahead of the scheduled launch, with teams tracking atmospheric conditions that could affect the north-easterly trajectory of the Falcon 9 rocket.

NASA's Curiosity rover identifies unusual mineral formations on Mars

22d ago · Source: NASA

NASA's Curiosity rover detected unexpected mineral formations during its ongoing investigation of Mars' surface, as documented in mission logs from September 2026.

The rover encountered rock fragments exhibiting a distinctive pattern of small, disc-shaped protrusions embedded within their structure. These formations appeared abruptly in a region previously characterized by finely layered sulfate-rich bedrock. Scientists noted similarities to features observed earlier in the mission near Pahrump Hills, where comparable structures had been linked to mineral precipitation processes in ancient fluid-rich environments.

To assess the nature of these features, the mission team scheduled targeted imaging using Mastcam and MAHLI cameras to capture detailed morphological data from multiple angles. Concurrently, instruments including ChemCam's laser spectrometer and the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer conducted compositional analyses at designated test sites. The team also initiated planning for potential drilling operations at a nearby location identified as a promising target for sample acquisition.

ChemCam's remote imaging system captured high-resolution views of surrounding geological formations, including buttes bordering Valle Grande. These 'cutaway' perspective images provide context for sedimentary layering patterns and erosion history in the region. The data will inform interpretations of how these rocks formed and evolved over geological time.

Identification of specific minerals requires data from the CheMin X-ray diffraction instrument, which can only be obtained following a drill campaign. After traversing over a kilometer since the last drilling site at Campo Marte, Curiosity is preparing to collect its first sample from this new geological unit. The upcoming drilling operation will involve preliminary contact science, preload testing, and sample extraction, contingent on environmental and technical conditions.

Mission scientists emphasized that definitive mineralogical conclusions await laboratory analysis of drill core samples. The discovery contributes to ongoing efforts to reconstruct Mars' environmental history and assess past habitability conditions.
