Yoshinori Kobayashi's Obocchama-kun manga will be adapted into a new television anime series slated for 2027, TV Asahi confirmed on Thursday. The project, titled Obocchama-kun Reborn, was revealed alongside a teaser video and visual on the franchise's official X/Twitter account, which features artwork by the original creator.
Chie Kōjiro will reprise her role as the titular character from the 1989 anime, in which she voiced the heir to the wealthy Obocchama family. Production will be led by Green Gold Animation, with collaboration from Shinei Animation and Sony Pictures Networks India, the latter having previously partnered on a 2025 India-targeted anime adaptation. The new series is being developed as a joint Japan-India production and will include both previously unadapted manga stories and original narratives overseen by Kobayashi.
The original 1989 anime, which ran for 164 episodes through 1992, followed the protagonist as he navigated life at Denenchofu Academy alongside classmates including Kakino Shuhei, Ojo Samayo, Fukurokoji Kanemitsu, and Binbo Taijo. It was later broadcast in India with dubbed versions in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. A separate 26-episode adaptation targeting children aged 6–11 aired on Sony YAY! in 2025, produced in collaboration with Sony Pictures Networks India and animated in India under Shinei Animation's supervision.
Kobayashi's manga, serialized in Shogakukan's CoroCoro Comic from 1986 to 1994, was compiled into 24 tankōbon volumes. The upcoming anime aims to expand on the franchise's legacy while introducing new stories under the creator's direct guidance.
