Microsoft has expanded its disc-to-digital initiative to include every Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S owner. The program converts eligible physical game discs into digital licenses that can be played without the disc.
To claim a digital license, users insert a supported game disc into any Xbox console while signed in. A notification confirms the license has been added. The process works on both Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S hardware, even when claiming licenses for Series X|S titles on an Xbox One.
Users may disable automatic disc installation through Settings > Profile & system > Devices & connections > Disc, where the "Play disc automatically" option can be turned off. This allows manual claiming of multiple licenses in sequence: after inserting a disc, the game appears on the home screen, and selecting it with the Menu button initiates the license claim. Once claimed, the disc can be ejected and replaced with the next title.
Not all games are eligible. Publishers including Square Enix and Ubisoft have not confirmed participation, meaning some titles cannot be digitized through this method. After claiming a license, the physical disc can still be lent to others, who will receive the digital license upon playing. The original owner regains the license upon reinserting the disc into their system.
The feature began testing with Xbox Insiders before its broader release.
