Apple announced a new Mac mini on August 25, featuring the M6 and M5 Pro processors. The devices are available for pre‑order and will begin shipping on September 22. The Mac mini was last refreshed in 2024 with the M4 and M4 Pro chips. Apple says the M6 chip uses a 2‑nanometer process and includes a 12‑core CPU with two super cores, a 12‑core GPU, and a dual 16‑core Neural Engine. Compared with the M4, the M6 provides up to twice the storage speed, twice the graphics performance, and up to 40 percent faster CPU performance. Performance metrics reported by Apple show up to four times faster large language model prompt processing in LM Studio, 1.4 times faster ray‑tracing rendering in Blender, and 1.5 times faster image processing in Affinity compared with the M4 Pro. Memory bandwidth for the M6 model reaches up to 170 GB/s, compared with 120 GB/s for the M4; the M5 Pro reaches up to 307 GB/s, up from 273 GB/s on the M4 Pro. RAM capacity for the M6 model can be configured to 32 GB, an increase from the 24 GB maximum on the M4; the M5 Pro supports up to 64 GB, up from 48 GB on the M4 Pro. Connectivity upgrades include the N1 wireless chip, Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, standard 2.5Gb Ethernet with an optional 10Gb option, and USB‑C Genlock support for precise display‑camera synchronization. Pricing starts at $899 for the M6 model, up from $799 for the M4, and $1,699 for the M5 Pro, up from $1,599 for the M4 Pro. Pre‑orders are open now, and shipments are scheduled to begin on September 22.
